http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1113975-the-worst-head-coach-in-every-nfl-teams-history/page/4 ...disagree with our guy, Cam takes this by a mile in my book.
Wanny was the worst. He did less with more and caused severe long term damage we are still feeling. Cam was one and done. Basically Cam was the clap and Wanny was herpes.
Wanny was the worst GM during my tenure. He did coach one of the worst late season collapses of all time and should have been fired after that. He was good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. He was also the coach during the Monday Night meltdown.
It's hard to tell between Wannstedt and Cameron. I'm not sure Wannstedt was as much an awful coach as he was a Matt Millen-quality GM.
I know many here don't agree with it but Nick Saban is my pick for the worst of the worse for Miami and I'm sticking to it.
It's hard to argue with his justification. Satan did start the downturn. JJ and Stash were 83-51. The last 3 stooges were 45-64.
Wannstedt started a decline in this franchise it still has not fully recovered from. Wannstedt had a basic foundation that Jimmy Johnson had put in place and he had some success with that foundation, but he did little to add to it. By the time Wannstedt was gone the team was left as a shell. Saban and Cameron both inherited a train wreck and neither had a clue with what to do with it. I truly believe that Saban's realization of how bad it really was caused his well documented and bazaar departure from the Dolphins. There is no way he would have come out and admitted he was in over his head. Cameron came into the same situation and his lack of experience as a head coach and the absence of a strong GM made his failure inevitable. There are some decisions that were made over those years that certainly helped to make recovery difficult. One of those decisions was the failure to bring in Drew Brees on two opportunities. If you compare the Brees and Pennington opportunities you can see what might have been with the brief success with Pennington before his injury.
The "Lobster Trap" Vikings game the week before still takes the cake for me. When Randy Moss threw that TD pass...I knew it was over.
The fact that we are left to choose between Cam Cameron or Dave Wannstache as the worst HC in our history is just sad, pathetic, and ****ty. Both were crap no matter how you slice it.
I think most teams have more than one ****ty choice for coaches. Hell Jets have Kotite and Lou Holtz.
Wannstedt rode the swell that Jimmy created and wasted one of the best defenses I've ever seen in Miami. He couldn't draft worth a sheit either... Cam was the most unlikable of all the coaches. It felt like a corporate takeover when he was head coach. Sparano was kind of the perfect storm of failure IMO...
Oh the irony. After reading this thread last night I came across my 2005 Miami Dolphins Media Guide while cleaning around the house. Who's on the cover? Nick Saban in his gold jacket of course. Funny reading through it... team has changed a lot since then. And Jason Garrett was the QB coach that year, totally forgot about that.
Saban isn't close. Wanny was a complete disaster. Cam only had one year.... Wanny destroyed a talented defense and over his tenure slowly killed off all talent on our entire roster. I will always despise that man.
Late and drunk but I have the 1992 media guide in my hands right now..Damn that was a good football team. Shula's team. Any questions. I'll answer them.
After his obsessive use of the words committment, perseverance, and determination, Saban gave up and went home. He wears the crown for worst lack of character. Competition is fierce otoh for "worst overall".
I think Shula started the downturn. You are right when just talking about wins and losses but Shula started the downturn when he also became the GM and never planned for the future and only coasted on talent until there was no more sufficient talent. But by no means am I nominating him for the worst coach! Atleast this current regime has attempted to solve our QB problems the right way. Whether or not that problem has been solved is yet to be seen. I believe and hope it is, but atleast we have attempted it the right way. Back on topic, I would have to say Wannstache.
In hindsight it is easy to take that view. Yet at the time of those hires, many people thought Huizenga had hired the best available candidate for the job. Jimmy Johnson was the hottest coach on the market when he was hired by the Dolphins. Many people felt at the time that the Dolphins would be a Super Bowl winner with Johnson as the teams new coach. To me the biggest mistake Huizenga made was to listen to Johnson, who convinced him to name Wannstedt the teams HC, when Johnson decided to retire from coaching. When Huizenga hired Saban, this was thought to be a great hire at the time. Numerous NFL teams had tried to hire Saban as their HC and he had turned down all the previous offers. The fact is that Saban is a great HC at the college level. He just never liked coaching at the NFL level. He was considered the best coach available when he was hired and it is hard to fault Huizenga for hiring someone that many other NFL teams coveted at the time. It just didn't work out. Cameron was considered the hottest coordinator on the market when he was hired. No one could have imagined how inept he would turn out to be as an NFL HC. At least Huizenga quickly realized how awful Cameron was as a HC and he got rid of him after just one season. The vast majority of Dolphin fans and NFL fans felt the Dolphins had secured their future when Huizenga convinced Bill Parcells to come in and take over football operations. As a HC, Parcells had turned around many organizations and it was thought at the time, he would do the same thing for the Dolphins. After going to the playoffs in the first year of the Parcells regime, it appeared Huizenga had finally found the right person. Unfortunately Parcells seemed to lose interest once Ross became the majority owner and the organization once again headed downward. So while it is easy to fault Huizenga now. The fact is that he always tried to hire, what were considered the best available people to run his organization at the time. Unfortunately for him and Dolphin fans, these individuals failed to turn around the organization. So other than the Wannstedt hire, Huizenga hired the one person who was thought to be the best available candidate for the job at the time. He certainly shouldn't be blamed for that.
Saban may have been the coach that angered the fans the most, but Wanny is definately the worst, for doing the least with what was given him. As was said, Wanny was given a Super Bowl defense by JJ, and simply let is grow old and lose pieces around him while doing absolutely nothing to improve the team. His whole strategy was to score 12 points and hope that the other team didnt get a big play. Give the 2000-2003 teams an average coach and QB, and they contend for titles, IMO.
Super Bowl D? The defense never met a 4th quarter it didn't collapse in. Say what you will about JJ's D's, but when push came to shove down the stretch, they folded more often than not.
JJ. He came in with huge expectations and arrogance and was basically a failure IMO. Oh, and he said Moss was overrated and didn't draft him.
That's a bit unfair IMO considering the death of a loved one was the reason he didn't stick around and I believe everyone is wrong on who they believe will be good or bad from college to the NFL.
