There is more to that exchange then is apparent, if one reads it correctly, Shula is basically defending JT (it seems to me) in that anyone who has payed a bit of attention to JT this offseason, will know that he has missed the "voluntary" minicamp only up until now.

Shoes doesn't sound sold on Tuna and Friends as of yet, he sounded like a guy who was distancing himself from the disaster of the post Shula era.

also key is that shula doesn't have a race in this horse. He didn't draft or nurture along JT, and no ties to Parcells.

You know what also struck me, Parcells hasn't reached out once to Shula. I'm not saying he has to, no way am I suggesting that, but his answer is telling whne asked if he woudl like to. He could have said anything but "not up to me." As if, he feels it's on Parcells to reach out to him.

Always love hearing what Shula has to say. I wish we never pushed him out the door. I really believe he would have won us at least one more superbowl.

I'm glad we pushed Shula out the door. His last few teams were crappy. I will forever hate JJ for how he treated Dan (not letting him call audibles, and generally showing disrespect to The Man), but JJ's teams were better than Shu's final teams. And then there's the abortion called Wannestedt, and I blame Huizinga for that one.

Interesting interview. I'm surprised Parcells hasn't reached out to Shula at all. I mean, would it kill the guy to call him up and shoot the ****, or go eat a steak with the legend?

How can you say JJ teams were better that Shula???I dont recall JJ winning a S/B here in Miami...Or Shula losing a playoff 62-7.

Put my vote for Shula anyday.

I think he ment Shu's last few years. If so I'd have to agree with him. I remember thinking that the game had sadly passed Shula by. Over his whole career though he's among the best if not the best.

I just don't think JJ was any improvement,as he tied Marinos hands behind his back and really did our offense no favors.the only thing I give JJ credit for was drafting good defensive players.as for wins ,we were really no better than were with Shula .only complaint I have with Shula is he was to loyal to his coordinators.there were some that should have been fired long before they were.after the last few seasons,I miss don even more.

    Nah.

He was a good as ever. He was just too loyal to Oliva...Oli....OK I say it...Tom Olivadotti :censored:

Now that Ive dodged Gods lightning bolt for mentioning that fools name...

Anyway, I think that we would've done the same as we did with JJ if not better with Coach Shula at the helm.

Sure, we had cap troubles. But just like JJ came in and fixed things we would've done the same under Coach Shula.

Its not like he was going to just sit here and have us in cap hell forever.

He would've done what was needed. Not to mention that guys we lost in FA like Troy Vincent and others might've stayed as those guys were loyal to him. One thing is for sure, they were not going to stay under JJ and it showed ...since they obviously left.

You will note that he specifies shula's final few years vs JJ's teams. And hes not wrong because the last 2-3 years under Don it wasnt the same. It was kinda like what Penn State has now with paterno...you know what the coach has done for you and you let things be by not firing him or reassigning him even though it becomes clear that hes not the same coach who once accomplished all those honors for your team or school. I dont love JJ's overall body of work as Dolphin HC but he had a tough act to follow and a big mess to clean up.

    Back to the topic though....

I think Parcells will get to that once he feels hes restored some of what Shula built. Right now, we'd all like to have more memories like we had during the Shula era so Id rather Tuna focus all his time and energy on that. Let someone else worry about the past or do it when our team conjures up memories that would make the old coach proud. :wink2:

    I'm in agreement there.

He just didn't have it late in his career.
What killed Shula and this team also was that the Phins gave him complete GM control.
Shula was a great coach but yet another example of how a great coach does not equate to being a great GM.
It took such a loooooooong time and massive damage for this organization to figure that out. Thank God they finally did!

Someone mentioned they thought Shula would have brought us another Super Bowl if he stayed.
I don't see it. As much as I respected the man I still feel it was his time to go.

All in all he'll be remembered for his great early successes as he should.

Yikes does that name make me cringe!

Don't forget Chuck Studley who was another of Shula's buddies he gave a job to that was too big for him. As good a coach as he was he made some terrible staff and personnel moves. If he had a good GM backing him up I believe we would have had a Lombardi trophy or 2 in the Marino years.

I'll say this. Shula is a legend. Unquestioned. Top few ever.

But how do you blow having the best QB ever? That's what irks me. Defense and running game was lacking during those wonderful Dan Marino years.

I agree with that. as great of a coach he was he couldn't build a team around Marino. Everytime i talk football with people and bring up Marino and Shula i always hear this line "Shula was great but he never won the big one with Marino"

I can't help but wonder why Harvey bothered with this:

But it is kind of your team, even though Wayne Huizenga owns the team?

No, no it isn't. Shula didn't hire Parcells and hasn't drafted anyone in the past 14 years. WTF man?

  20. calphin

It was bad personnel moves, draft, free agency and having bad assistant coaches.I wish the robbie family and wayne H would have hired a good GM and just let Shula coach. bottom line is,S/B wins,no one has done any better.

part of the lacking with the running game was danny didn't want to hand the ball off and was horrible at it. I think in Marinos eyes, why hand the ball off for a 3 yard gain when I can throw down the field for a 30 yard gain?God I miss those days.

I, for one, will always respect Don Shula. He was determined, motivating, a task master and a teacher. I don't think he should be compared to ANY other coach, he's the best.

I don't care if bp reaches out to him or not. I think bp is a buffoon, always have. Shula is a man. bp doesn't begin to have the talent of Shula.

IMO all this stuff about JT is for the press. bp and company evidently think they need to keep things stirred up. Still haven't heard a negative word from JT.

And to sum it up. Yes, I'm a homer when it comes to Shula. I admire and respect the man and the coach. It takes a lot for me to say I admire and respect anyone, but he's one of the exceptions. I think he will always have the right to speak what he feels about the team, after all, HE made the team and it's history along with all those great players..

JJ's teams really weren't better than Shula's final teams. Yes, the 1995 team was an underachieving 9-7 mess. But the 1994 team was beaten in the playoffs by a near miraculous comeback from a SD team that eventually wound up in the Super Bowl. In 1993 we had the best record in football until finally losing both our 1st string (Marino) and 2nd string (Mitchell) QB's, and in 1992 we hosted (and lost) the AFC Championship game.

Those 4 years were better than JJ's 4 years, whose only real high point was winning a wildcard game on the road in Seattle.

Years and years of bad drafts, and questionable personnel decisions.

But I think Shula, as a coach, could still run with anybody.

I still think he was always more concerned about his hair and looks than the team.
His hair didn't even move in one of the film clips I saw when they dumped the water or Gator Aid on him. :sidelol:

:lol:Haha, thats because his hair acts as an umbrella. Torrential downpours wouldnt move that thing. I bet the snowballs in Buffalo would break when they hit that flop.
