Given the dire CB depth and injury situation (Marshall reported as out, Carroll as battling injury), I see a chance Ireland makes a move for a CB. what choice is there? One scenario would involve trading Tony McDaniel to a team needing some DL depth. CK had pointed out Arizona as a good target. McDaniel, at this point, is not even active on game days. The Cardinals, apparently, have some depth at CB and could move one. The question is whether that CB could learn contribute so quickly in a new system. Chances are they would not play Sunday. The second option is to look at guys we cut from camp. Well, we haven't revisited that, or we wouldn;t have had guys like Alphonso Smith in for a look (we didn't sign him). The third option would be taking a CB with experience in Coyle's system. This means a Cincinatti player who has been cut. Cinci has CB CHris Lewis-Harris on its practice squad, but he is a rookie who has not spent time under Coyle. If the Cinci defensive secondary scheme is still very similar to ours this year, perhaps he's worth a look, but I doubt it. Are there any veteran Free Agents available who played for Coyle in Cincinnati? Sure: Fred Bennett - Played 5 games for them in 2010 and was cut. Then cut by Houston, San Diego and Arizona. Hasn't played since 2010. Rico Murray - Played for Coyle. Was with the Bengals in 2009, 2010, 2011. But now he is under contract with the Edmonton Eskimos. (Padre, can you get him out of that for us?) Kelly Jennings - Could be an option. Played for Coyle in 2011. Currently a Free Agent. He's a Florida native who went to Miami for college. The truth is, it's too late to bring a CB in to play this Sunday. But, Ireland may need to find some depth moving forward. Not much to choose from, but don;t be surprised if either a trade of McDaniels (or another D-lineman) happens, and local boy Kelly Jennings comes in for a tryout/look with our coaching staff.
Well, we did promote one DB from our practice squad. That covers for the loss of Marshall numbers wise. If Carroll can't go, then it comes down to Wilson moving back to corner and Stanford being the nickel and Amaya the dime. Yeah, the Davis trade was such a smart idea. Andy Dalton must be licking his chops about slicing and dicing our depleted secondary.
Other Possibilities: Morgan Trent - played for Coyle in 2009-2011. He would stand the best chance of coming in and grasping the scheme immediately Geoff Pope - played in Coyle's system '08-09. But hasn't played at all since 2009. A real stretch on this one. Don't see it. Keiwan Ratliff - with Coyle 2004-2007, then in spots during 2009 and 2010. Now in Arena League. Should be there mentally, but does he have anything left physically? Note that he was let go and resigned three times by the Bengals. That tells me he was a bit of a Coyle security blanket when Coyle ran out of options. Could it happen again?
i'm still ok with the davis trade, mcdaniel was not active because he was hurt, will play for the first time since week 1 and i hope we dont waste one of our picks to pick up a corner
It's certainly not ideal. But come April we'll be happy for the extra pick on draft day. Could help us move up into the bottom of the first round if a Pass Rusher or Wide Receiver falls.
I'd be totally against trading a pick for a corner. Makes no sense after giving a corner up for a pick.

Sorry, I just can't agree that we should move Big Mac as we sorely needed him in rotation against both Zona and the Jets imo and that will help the back four just as much, if not more, by keeping the pressure off them.
Why do you keep neglecting the fact that the way Vontae has played this year he should have a horse turd on his helmet instead of a horse shoe? I ask because I feel like you are objective in all aspects....except Vontae Davis. You seem to have a thing for him. The fact is we got a second rounder for a guy currently playing CB at the level Legadu Naanee plays WR.
Plenty of productice CB's out there right now. Bryant McFadden who is a bit older 31 I think played for the Steelers and the Cardinals. He's not a great corner but he's certainly better than Nolan Carroll. I don't see us trading for one at this point. Not sure why we didn't give Alphonso Smith a shot.
No trading draft picks to put band aids on a young, developing team. Let the young kids play and learn to the extent they can. Save the picks for the offseason.
Right now today, PFF rates them overall as Marshall the 78th corner, Davis 83rd and Carroll 87th. If one goes by coverage rating only, Marshall is 26th, Davis 53rd and Carroll 89th. Out of 99 corners who've played at least 25% of their team's defensive snaps. Davis' coverage rating places him right now between Brandon Carr and Tramon Williams. IMO, the logical way to look at Davis is his overall body of work in the NFL. From 2009 through 2011, he was our best corner in coverage or in run support. So he had some struggles in training camp...the logical thing to do would be recognize that he does have talent and give him a chance to work his way out of it. To just pull the plug on him and make that trade was a knee jerk reaction IMO. He has had ONE bad game with Indy, the Bears game. Since then, his overall rating is a +1.6 and his coverage rating is a +2.9.
He's been bad overall. He has a negative overall rating. 2 of the 3 games, he was bad. He has a 155 QB rating when thrown against him. And he's had 3 penalties in 3 games.

Not one of 3, 2 of 3. That's according to their stats. Having 5 passes completed against you when thrown at 5 times isn't a good game. And in the 3rd game he was facing Gabbert, a game I could have played well in.
According to who's stats? PFF rated him the same in week 2 and week 3. +0.8 in each game. Minnesota and Jacksonville. Pass coverage ratings were a +1.4 in week 2 and a +1.5 in week 3. I already said it in the earlier post, but you apparently disregarded it, and probably will again. Go to his player page, on the right hand side click Defensive Summary and you will see a drop down menu. Click coverage. Look at week 2, and then you will see the day he had. Not a good game. Those numbers do not tell the whole story. On plays where his coverage was good enough that a pass wasn't attempted toward him do not factor in to passer rating. He did enough things right to get a +1.4 rating in coverage against Minnesota. So, that was disrespectful to say your Gabbert comment was fatuous? Those numbers tell a good enough story. If you feel that he had a good day despite having 5 passes completed against him in as many throws for 59 yards, well I obviously disagree. That's a bad game, IMO.

Ya Go To War with What Ya Got in the Inventory - not what you had or what you plan to get. I have a feeling the the absence of Davis was not a unilateral decision by Ireland. It was a corporate decision with the longer term view in hand rather than one game out of 16, or possible injuries, or who we might pick up in the meantime. It may well be that the reason he is not here now is the same thing we have witnessed in the interplay in the last several posts - increasing tension betwixt two team members, or possibly more.
