Check the plays that start at 1:15 and 1:43 in this video:

These plays where Tannehill was on the move and could've easily run the ball (he's a former wide receiver!) but instead chose to throw downfield for good completions represent a skill that I think will one day distinguish him from most QBs and potentially land him in the Pro Bowl.

He throws on the move very well, and he chooses to throw on the move rather than to run the ball. Notice RG3 went out of today's game with a concussion on a run downfield. I think Ryan Tannehill will both stay more healthy and be a more dangerous quarterback by throwing on the move like this than by running the ball.

Of course there will be times when his feet prove valuable and he helps the team with them, but I'm far more excited by seeing plays like these than I would be by seeing him take off running.

The fact that he's choosing to pass on plays like these I think reflects that he's got the instincts of a quarterback first and foremost, and I think the ability he shows on these plays is much more advanced than that of a typical rookie.

I agree .He will always have that option when the game is on the line. Also there is something else I have noted .Most QBs have trouble hrowing against their bodies to the opposite side of he field.Tanny does not .He appears to equally as good throwing to both sides of the field when required.

I was very impressed by those two plays as they happened.

This might sound outlandish, but pre-snap there is a QB he reminds me of very much. That QB is Peyton Manning. I'm not comparing him to Manning. I'm not saying he will be as good as Manning. I'm saying their mannerisms are similar pre-snap in my eyes.

The way Ryan directs the offense pre-snap is something he already does better than 90% of starting QB's in the league. I can't say I've seen many QB's (especially young ones) as active as Ryan is before the snap. It's another thing that will be part of his identity.

He used his feet to buy his recievers time! We have to have that, we have not seen that in forever. Move into the open space and let the recievers get open. Its beautiful.

Tannehill has been impressive this season! Like I said earlier, he shut up those who said he would have benefited a year on the bench then in the game.

So far he has had a good season for a rookie but lets see how he goes the rest of the season. I'm curious to see how he goes against different defenses but so far so good.

The coaching staff has done a superb job getting him ready. He's steadily improving and he's getting there. The Fins defense is helping though so he's not having to win games on his own.

Yup, as much as I love the athleticism, for preservation purposes, his mentality to buy time while keeping his eyes downfield is what's best long term.

The first play of that highlight I liked a lot, the speed with his footwork was sweet..

Plus you stand to gain a lot more yardage by extending the play like that and throwing it downfield, Big Ben style, than by taking off running.

Each week he makes a throw that really impresses me... just a tight window throw between 3-4 defenders. This week that throw was to Clay.

You couldn't ask for more, this kid has a natural way about his play that is amazing, his receivers are nice but they don't create separation, if he had guy like Green the Dolphins would be 4-1 and looking to the playoffs.
    Maybe Gafney might help.

Yep, I have noticed the same thing... I know it's early in his career, but he seems to have that same mentality that, dare I say, Marino had. You see the guy open; let it fly! Not to mention his ball placement and ability to throw a receiver open. He is fun to watch!

Now, I am not comparing him to Marino in anyway. I am just saying I can see certain things from him that remind me of Marino. The confidence to throw the ball into tight windows and be successful at it and the ability to place the ball where only his receiver has a chance to make a play on it. Every week he is getting more and more confident and also better at it. I hope he continues to progress every week, like he has done in the first five games. If he does and we can surround him with more talent than we have now, we could be in for a great next 10+ years.

I agree even though I can't see the video I know what you're talking about.
I also like how he changes the pass potection successfully and plays well under pressure. Hopefully he will get better with audibles to expose a defenses weakness, that will come with time. For the most part he plays like a veteran QB IMO

I mentioned that in another thread and just posted about it in this thread before I read this. He really does remind me of Manning in that sense, but not with good audibles, its when he changes the pass protection that he reminds me of Manning.

Well it's kind of subjective. In my eyes though yes. Aside from maybe the top couple elite QB's I don't see anyone as active as Ryan pre-snap. Nor as successful with their pre-snap reads. I saw Ryan Tannehill make two separate pre-snap adjustments on the same play, as the play clock expired (3..2...1...) and still get the play off. The way he checks out of plays and directs his offense is something special. The play he adjusted before finding Clay up the seem was a thing of pure beauty. He diagnoses the defense, made the needed change and placed the ball in a perfect spot. I believe he did it again on the play Clay dropped.

Maybe I shouldn't say 90% because that would put him top four. Maybe I should say better than 70% which would put him top ten. Which for a rookie is highly impressive.

I was actually more impressed by RT this week than last. There were three plays that I was particularly happy about when they happened. Two were those mini scrambles were he hit Bess on one and Hartline on the other when the defense lost focus and the third was one were he took a sack. All three showed good decisions in situations where things didn't go as planned. I also don't recall any really dangerous passes. There were a couple of deep passes I don't think he should have thrown, but he put those ahead of everybody so they may have been just throw aways. There was a couple of times I thought the coverage and the situation dictated an audible to a longer pass that RT didn't take advantage of, but other than those I felt it was a pretty clean game by RT.

Those were the two I mentioned in the original post.

I was impressed by the sack as well, because when he was hit and spun around, he had the ball in one hand and could've thrown up some wounded duck, but instead he tucked it in and went down.

Meanwhile they're performing among the best in the league, with a rookie with a current QB rating of 70 throwing to them.

I think it would be hilarious if Ryan became the best QB of this class. Something I see as being very possible. All the hype of Luck, the trade up for RGIII, the feel good story of Russell Wilson and IMO even the hype of Weeden was higher with his age pushing him back.

Yeh...I see Tannehill / Luck being the next Brady / Manning as far as.....rivalry is concerned.

I have never seen a QB throw so accurately on the move....heres the thing that excites me. So far...he reminds me of a more athletic stronger armed Chad Pennington. Hes got it between the ears...obviously has the physical tools...and the guy is just a consummate team mate.
