A Little Extra Pressure

You're a successful man. You ask a woman to marry you. She says no and marries another guy. You find another woman and marry her.

An event comes up where your wife and the woman who said no to you will be side-by-side on stage. Do you think your wife wants to make sure she looks her best, and shows she was the better choice after all? Of course she would want that. That's pride and also her wanting to help her man save face.

I'm alluding to this Sunday when Jeff Fisher comes to Miami, the town where he said "No thanks" to Steven Ross' proposal of becoming the Dolphins' head coach. Philbin since accepted and all is well. But if I am Joe Philbin, I am aware that my boss Ross was slightly embarrassed by Fisher's rejection. To help my boss save face I'd want to show the league and fans that Ross actually ended up with the better bride, as it were. Fisher beating Philbin just rekindles the line of thinking that Ross got the short end of that stick.

There has to be slightly more pressure for Philbin to win against Fisher this week, even if it's only Philbin putting it on himself.

And before you say "These guys are professionals, it's a business, I don't think they take any of it personally." go back and watch Sparano when the Jets beat us. or Jason Taylor as a Jet getting a Gatorade bath from teammates when they beat us. Or Josh McDaniels' victory laps the year he beat Belichick and the Pats in Denver.

This one matters a little extra for Philbin and Ross.

Reminds me of Culpepper pointing to his knee and expressing his knee was ok after he came back to Miami to play us. LOL
I know things like this matter to people but I think its safe to say that this is the last thing on Philbin's mind. We don't need any extra motivation to beat the Rams, we will simply just beat them! The players are motivated to let the win collumn express how good the team is this year!

I am taking a cautious approach to this game... So I am calling it 30-17 Dolphins...

This team is hungy for wins period and they are starting to believe in the scheme that Philbin and the coaching staff has in place week after week....

The team believes it will win games, and not just for Philbin nor Ross but for themselves...

I don't think this situation compares with Tony Sparano's in New York or even Josh McDaniels' in Denver. First off McDaniels and Belichick remained friends, hence his re-hiring in NE. This is unlike Eric Mangini who went behind Belichick's back during the playoff run before he left and tried to recruit people to come with him. Belichick never forgave him for that. There was an understanding in place not to raid his staff (much like Philbin w/ Green Bay) and Mangini not only broke it but at a time when it could have distracted preparation during the playoffs. But McDaniels played by the rules and his feelings of celebration in beating NE were more right of passage-ish. And Sparano, I'm sorry but that situation isn't even remotely close. Miami is the city that heckled him, chided him, and the team that fired him. I don't care how 'professional' you are, you're going to want to stick it to that team.

There's nothing right of passage or bitter about this matchup for Joe Philbin. During the time when Miami flirted with Jeff Fisher, Philbin was:

    A) In the midst of a playoff run, and keenly focused on it, and
    B) Lost his son in a horrible accident

Not only is it out of character for Joe Philbin to feel any angst about the Fisher thing, when Joe Philbin reflects on that time in his memory, I'm sure Miami's flirtation with Jeff Fisher (if he was even remotely aware of the extent of it, and the chances are he was not) is the very last thing that comes up. I know that's hard to believe because we're all Miami Dolphins fans and we hung on, and overreacted to, every single nano-second of the news cycle...but from Philbin's perspective he was quite far away from it, mentally and physically. Not to mention, there is NO public record out there of what really happened that is universally agreed upon. Many believe Miami said no to Jeff Fisher by refusing to cave to his demands. Someone very high up from inside the building (as in, Steve Ross or Jeff Ireland) would have to give him the real scoop on it, and who would be stupid enough to do that? Even Ireland shouldn't be foolish enough for that.

The reality is, I don't think Joe Philbin feels anything about this game. I think Steve Ross might, but the chances are well into the 90% range that he hasn't said a word about it to Philbin, because doing so would be an overt admission that Joe was not our first choice. And again, what idiot says that? Like I said the public record of it was ambiguous so what idiot decides let's have a "what really happened" chat with the man you hired wherein you admit that he was your second choice?

Steve Ross may feel something about this game, and Jeff Fisher might even feel a little something about it, but I can just about guarantee Joe Philbin has no feelings on it.

Agree that the situations aren;t the same, because they aren't the exact same situations. Obviously. What IS similar is that sometimes a game has another personal level. I don;t think it's personal for Philbin. That wasn't what I intended to convey, so perhaps I was unclear. I think Philbin must be aware of how Ross may feel about Fisher and I think Philbin would want to make Ross look and feel good by beating Fisher.

It's not a 'bitterness' thing though. I wouldn;t go that far at all. just an awareness that it would be nice for the boss to get a win this weekend, a little more so than usual. Like I said, a *little* extra pressure. Not a lot. Just a little. And more as a gesture by Philbin than because anyone is putting the pressure on him. Like you said, I doubt ANYONE in house is bringing it up. But if every fan on the street is aware of the Fisher/Miami thing, and if the media bring it up this week (which I am sure they did, have and will) then Philbin will at the least be aware that Ross didn't benefit in perception from that job offer to Fisher, and the subsequent rampant rumors Fisher turned him down. Actually, wait, it's not a rumor, I remember reading a Jeff Fisher quote this week about him choosing the Rams over the Dolphins. So yeah, he turned Ross down.

Think of it as Philbin's gift to his boss. No, not on the scale of 'revenge' because the feelings never ran that deep, but more of a nice validation of Ross.

If they beat the Rams yes Ross, Ireland, the players, fans, most fans, all know they will have that little extra satisfaction.

Only the wife part is a little different because while your sitting there with your better half your thinking ya I tapped that.
