Gil Brandt confirms Ireland had no interest in Tannehill in January. Exactly what I thought.

Gil Brandt is an idiot then, because there were reports LAST SEASON that Ireland liked Tannehill.

You don't think Jeff was trying to play down their interest in Tannehill? It's pretty plausible that they were worried Brandt was going to talk to other teams and say "Hey the Dolphins really like Tannehill". That would also make sense, because Ireland later asks Brandt if he talked to anybody else.

No I don't. I think Ireland's interest in Tannehill started when Philbin was hired.

There were reports of Ireland personally scouting RT long before Philbin was hired. We know he went to watch him personally after watching him on tape. Also I had heard that Ireland advised Ross that they should not pursue Orton b/c the coming QB draft class was so good. I heard he listed his top three guys as Luck, Barkley and RT.

I heard Ireland say he was scouting Tannehill for 2 years after he was drafted. I saw no reports he ever attended a TAMU game.

There were a lot of reports that "Miami scouts" liked Tannehill floating around this board. I don't recall any that said Ireland liked him. As rafael said, there were reports that Ireland scouted him personally and reports that he sent tapes of Tannehill around the league to multiple people to get second opinions.

Is there a specific report you know of that came out and said Ireland liked Tannehill? He's typically pretty coy about things like that, especially high picks. I recall that Miami had virtually no contact with Jared Odrick and Mike Pouncey leading up to the draft; maybe one visit apiece, early on, and the combine, but nothing other than that. I recall they met with Tannehill on several occasions.

Well, that's an open definition I think. It could mean he had scouts at various Texas A&M games the 2 years leading up to this year, and reviewing tape. I still feel like there was a report he attended a game. I don't recall a report saying Ireland liked, or disliked Tannehill for that matter, at any point.

When your job is to draft players, you WILL be scouting all the top QB prospects. Especially when your team needs a QB and picks top ten.

Just because he did the OBVIOUS, which is scouted a guy he is SUPPOSED to scout, it isn;t the same as saying Ireland wanted Tannehill or was high on him.

He could have sent tapes to get second opinions on several QBs and still had RT ranked behind others.

I'd be more interested in hearing how he'd ranked the QB prospects, and with what grade disparities.

Come on man. Connect the dots. Joe Philbin showed up in Davie with a plan to hire Mike Sherman as his OC and draft Ryan Tannehill with the 8th pick. Those guys go way back and I'm sure they were on the same page early in the process. Jeff Ireland, as a Tuna disciple, would never consider a former WR and 19 game starter a viable QB option as a 1st round pick. Mr. Ross, on the other hand, had Carl Peterson as his envoy and they apparently concluded Philbin's plan was the way to go. Has anyone seen Petersen since Philbin was hired?

Again, Ireland said he liked Tannehill for a long time. He said based off his 2010 tape he thought he was a first round prospect.

After so many years and so many different faces at QB, hearing these kinds of stories is exciting. In the end, they're just opinions. They don't mean much. However, I can't help but be encouraged at the prospect that we might one day be competitors again. I still remember all the fun I had during the '08 season. More than anything, I want that again. Every week mattered. Games coming down to the wire, defenses making plays, offense being clutch, it was a rollercoaster of fun. Topping it all off was the win at NY to end the Jets season.

I really hope this kid keeps developing and saves the franchise.

you could be right Taz, the dots do connect, however Ireland could of had his own high opinion of the prospect..

The Philbin/Sherman/Tannehill connection, it is pretty damn interesting if you think about it.

I think you misunderstood my response.

I'm merely saying that while Ireland may or may not have ever attended a Texas A&M game in-person, he still could've sent his staff there, reviewed his game tape, etc. etc. There were reports that Miami's scouts really liked Tannehill. I think you could assume to some degree that a GM, of any team, prior January, is still thinking "big picture" thoughts relative to the draft as opposed to delving in on certain players. After all, the underclassmen have until the 15th to declare each January. It'd make sense to me that at that point in time, scouts probably have more intimate knowledge of specific players while a GM/Personnel Director is probably more focused on the big picture - determining values, needs, which of his own players to re-sign/release, etc.

It would've been easy for Ireland, post-draft, to go back and say he's liked him for 2 years or whatever, even if he really wasn't onto him until January 2012 as Brandt says. That'd be stupid for him to undermine a guy he just drafted by saying otherwise. Especially stupid given the heat that the fan base put on him after not signing Manning, Flynn, or Smith.

I don't think Jeff Ireland's exactly a shining light when it comes to PR stuff, but I think he's a good poker player when it comes to who he likes or doesn't like when it comes to drafting.

In 2008, he gave us the "pillar of defense" comment. We got Jake Long.

In 2009, 2010, and 2011, I believe Miami only had 1 or 2 meetings with Vontae Davis, Jared Odrick, and Mike Pouncey each. As the song says, "two out of three ain't bad".

In 2012, he didn't really give the fans anything other than the "see how the plan plays out" with respect to the QB position.

So far, so good with Tannehill. Who cares if he wasn't onto him in January or sought second opinions (I think to some degree you could pin that on him not having as much trust in Philbin/Sherman since it was reported that Mike McCoy was his top candidate for the head coaching spot. I'd buy that argument more than most).

As for the rest of the class, I think Jonathan Martin's come along nicely from where he was. He played very well against a pretty damn good player in Carlos Dunlap.

Kheeston Randall appears to be a nice find.

Miller, Egnew, and Matthews - well, they remain to be seen, but I also wouldn't call drafting skill players Ireland's strong suit given his track record here. He's drafted Hartline and signed Bess as an UDFA, other than that...it's not been pretty.

I understand why a player like Olivier Vernon was drafted. I don't understand why, based on Ireland's background with Parcells, why it was Olivier Vernon that was selected as opposed to someone else.

Ryan Tannehill's success is going to trump everything else in this class if he pans out the way Gil Brandt thinks he will.

I’d happily give Ireland the benefit of the doubt DJ because I believe teams that have continuity in the front office are more likely to be successful. The thing that makes me question Ireland’s sincerity was the report that he favored McCoy over Philbin and that just doesn’t make any sense to me if he was actually a fan of Tannehill.

I guess it doesn't really matter as long as Ireland and Philbin can work together moving forward.

Don't you think he brought a short list to Ross, with Philbin being on it, and went from there..?

I remember a quote where he stated that 15 mins into the Philbin interview Ireland knew he was the guy.

You know I understand your points because, with all the change upstairs, all the termoil, we don't know what's been going on ya know, I think a great scoop by someone, anyone, would be to know who hired who and who drafted what..

There's so much we don't know but I'll say this, watching Ireland on hard knocks, he Improved his reputation with me, I thought he handled players and some situations with class and professionalism, I know his peers think highly of him, and I know if this team goes on a run and competes for a playoff spot, it won't matter anymore, he will of had a strong hand in building a team that completely fu&$ed with the minds of 100 percent of the national and local media and has set up the teams future with more draft picks than any other team this year, and 50/60million to sign your own and play a little..

If his team overachieves and looks promising, he deserves next year, if not, and the team goes 6 and 10, I'm not sure he'll survive, especially if your theory is true in that Ross wanted Philbin, Philbin wanted Sherman, and Sherman and Philbin wanted Tannehill, if that's how it went down, I would bet money that Sherman/Philbin combo talked about Tannehill joining the party, during the coaching interview process.

Don't you guys know, only the bad picks are the ones Ireland wanted... any good pick was someone else's idea.

I read a 5 page thesis proving this matter on a "non-zombie" website, with stone cold facts. It has to be true!

I should have specified offensive skill players. I'm not trying to trash Jeff Ireland, merely stating that his track record in drafting running backs, receivers, and tight ends hasn't been good. Thus far.

I thought that was a clear inference from my post...guess not.

I honsesty couldnt care less if Ireland was scouting him years ago or just listened to the new staff and made the call to go w/ Tanny. The fact is he pulled the trigger and made the pick. HUGE risk if the pick failed (which I thought it would).

So I cant give JI enough credit...if Tanny continues to grow like he is showing right now then this, combined with the upside Im seeing from some of the other personnel he selected...makes me believe he is a winner. Im beginning to think that Philbin and this new coaching staff might finally be utilizing the talent....at least thats how I see it and how many of my friends at the local pub see it....
