His play has been above expectations all season but the touchdown saving tackle on the goal line, that is a man play. I don't know too many corners in this league that make that play.
We can give Sean Smith his props without having to bring up Vontae. Let's focus on the players on our team and stop worrying about everyone else.
Sean Smith has always been kicked in the balls by this fan base. No one was patient enough for him to develop. You people know who you are and should hide your faces in shame. Absolutely ridiculous the grief this guy has been given. The treatment with him was embarrassing to me as a Phins fan. Just goes to show how little some mouth breathers actually know about the game of football.
Smth has improved by leaps and bounds this year. He has performed way above my expectations and I'm glad to see it.
That stop was huge! Yeah they scored, but they had to use a Time out to challenge it, which could have been the difference in this game.
Not to mention some people could have been here much longer than others but chose to register later.. it really is just a ridiculous thing to point out in any topic.
I had Vontae becoming the better corner, was critical of Smith last year, i should of projected his length and range potential better, I'm happy he came to camp off a productive strength and conditioning offseason, when camp started, he was all business, and as soon as I saw that ability and focus, It was obvious that his head caught up to his talent, well at east I had him as a breakout player from the first camp report.lol
Actually he had a pretty poor game today overall especially compared to his last 2 games. Look confused out there for most of the game. Gave far too much cushion to WR's who didn't need it and gave up a lot of yards. I recall one play where the WR cut off his route and came running back towards the QB....Sean spun himself around so badly he was running downfield still. The WR caught the ball with Smith 8 yards away. He's actually much better against the physical tall WR's. Match him up with the midget speed guys and he's got issues.
Yeah, I agree with Van. SS has been very good this season but I don't think he played that well today. He didn't give up any big plays but did give up some easy catches.
You didn't project anything wrong. All we had to go on was his play in college and his play here since he was drafted. Most of us believed in his potential, but he has been very up and down up to this point. He would make some good plays and flash that potential, but he would then make some serious whiffs. I don't think that's very arguable. For whatever reason, be it coaching, maturing, change of scheme, etc, his lights have just come on and he's coming into his own and living up to his potential. It happens all the time with players and there is no set timetable for this to happen. I'm just real happy that it is happening.
Big as in yardage? Or meaning?..... Because the TD he gave up against the Cards was pretty big at the end of the game..... I like him, think he is developing into a fine CB, and they should extend him at some point but he has trouble in the red zone, and still needs to learn to get his head around....thats always been his main problem, it is like he doesn't trust himself to turn his head and still run with the WR
I didn't think he had a great game yesterday either. Gave a ton of cushion and looked lost on a few plays. I honestly think it's focus with him, and not a talent issue.
Still doesn't play the ball in the air at all, Misses tackles, plays conservatively. He is a good cover corner, not a play-maker IMO.
I'm sorry but your post lost credibility by adding "far from" to it. He's growing closer to becoming an elite corner than he is being far from it.
Except that his post attacked others who have been here regarding SS, while technically only being registered for 2 months... How would he know what transpired on this site about SS two years ago ?? No big deal, but it was a rather condescending post... I'm real happy that he has been playing well this season, but it's taken 3 full seasons plus to finally start to think that he's 'consistent'. That's always been the knock on him...but, count me in as one that glad he's playing the way he is...
I will admit I've been hard on Smith and been angered with him. But, this year he has really stepped up his game and is playing well. I hope it continues.
Well, if you believe he sucks then you're obviously entitled to your opinion. (b/c that's essentially how you're qualifying him with the use of such extreme adjectives) His play says otherwise.
Do you even watch the games, seriously? His play says otherwise? If you're referring to his goal line play (b/c that's basically all he's done outside of routine plays that every CB should make) then I agree, but that's not the norm by a long stretch.
I'd like to know what a DB's coverage responsibilities are before criticizing him for allowing a completion, especially a short one. If it's a single safety look then I'd rather give up the short stuff than gamble and risk allowing up a big play.
Good play by him. But where was he on the toss sweep on the 2nd play of the game? At home, washing his tights...
You mean like how he's usually put on opposing team's #1 receiver with little help yet boasts the NFL's 4th best Win Probability Added per AdvancedNFLStats? ..... or how he limited Fitzgerald & Green to 65 or less yards in back to back weeks, with Fitz & Green having long receptions of only 11 & 18 yards and Sean forcing a fumble on Green's 18 yarder? .... or the 2 other forced fumbles that were reversed/overruled on bogus calls IIRC. .... or how he picked off 2 passes against Fitzgerald, one of which prevented a Zona TD, and both of which led to 10 Miami points? .... or how he ranks #3 in the NFL in passes defended? .... or how he's greatly contributing to the NFL's 8th ranked pass defense regarding opposing QBR (77.5) and 5th in completion % allowed (57.5)? .... or are you referring to how his 1 on 1 coverage ability has often provided Coyle and the defense greater flexibility, including Reshad Jones being freed up for other duties? Yeah you're right. He totally sucks.
The issue with cornerback evaluations is that the good things that are done usually go unseen and/or unheard. But when things go bad, oh boy....They are focused on and that's how players are criticized. Obviously Smith has his issues and he's not Darelle Revis by any stretch, but he's improving and has become a quality player. He's still going to have issues, yes, but which corner doesn't besides the elite?
If he's matched vs the taller/physical guys he does very well. Match him against the shifty smaller guys and he struggles like he did this past game. Trying to recall the 2nd forced fumble that was overturned...but the first one he had absolutely nothing to do with...the WR popped the ball out all on his own. He's doing well this season but he's still madly inconsistent in his technique that even his own head coach has pointed it out.
