During last nights Packers vs Texans game they were talking about the Pack and some of their recent struggles. During the segment they mentioned the loss of Philbin hurt because he was excellent at making game time adjustments. Nice to know we have a coach that has this important unique skill.(This could be the key to being consistently competitive that many fans have been longing for)
Just posing the question..How big are in game and halftime adjustments in the big scope of being a great head coach, what makes a good adjuster?
Even a drunk can see that. http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?72672-***Official-Dolphins-vs-Rams-Thread***/page94
IMO it cuts to the very core of being one. For example, there's very little doubt in my mind, Parcells played a huge role behind the scenes in making our halftime adjustments, during the initial 2008 season of his tenure. Why? Because rather than organizational restructuring as VP of Operations, it simply allowed Parcells to contribute to what he was best at doing. It clearly ended that season, as even with Pennington still at QB prior to his injury, we never saw anything even close to that kind of production since, as the reins were passed to Sparano.
Just look at Tony Sparonos tenure. He was HORRIBLE at half time adjustments and we lost most often because of it..
As big as the 3rd quarter drive you saw against the Rams in which screen passes that were not practiced during the week of gameplanning for the Rams were used to get the team down the field, which set up the TD to Fasano that was, points-wise, the difference between a win and a loss. As big as the fact that we're currently outscoring teams 45-17 in the 3rd quarter on the season. In other words, HUGE.
Exactly!!! You beat me to to it. Morano was an idiot and he had no friggin concept of in game adjustments. I hate to say that in game adjustments is one of Billacheat's strengths. Morano was the typical idiot hammering a square peg in a round hole.
Ironically enough, Kevin Coyle had some commentary on the idea of coaches making major halftime adjustments:
IMO it is the KEY to success. The ability to know what is wrong & then the ability to correct it is unique. It is literally a game changer by finding a way to allow your team to be successful: boosts player moral, builds team confidence, and puts the opposition on their heels and causes them to have to be able to change. Can't wait for Philbin vs Belichick(should be a good chess match)

Glad you posted that, its what I was thinking about when I saw the question because I saw that 3rd quarter stat pulled up during the last game I believe they showed it on TV or at least they talked about it. That stat is huge and we can all thank Philbin for it. I wish the 4th quarter could be that good. Maybe we need to burn all 3 time outs at the beginning of the 4th quarter and have an adjustment session on the sidelines. LOL
