Just wondering if the last game changed anyone's confidence in Dan Carpenter. I still blame him for 2 losses. Man it would be nice to be 6-1. Before the last game I had a gut feeling that Carpenter would turn back into the Mr. Reliable that we have known him to be for years. I joked about him seeing an exorcist during the bye week. I was pleased to see my gut instinct that he would turn things around, come true against the Jets. It was an away game and it was windy and he made his field goals. If he is back to normal we might add about 6 points to our points per game stat which is at 21.4. It would be nice to score 27.4 points per game. Since that's impossible I"ll say 28 PPG. What do you guys think?
Dan Carpenter is a high level kicker in the NFL. The reaction to a small run of poor form on here was a bit ott. I don't have any worries about either of our kickers in this team.
If he blows a playoff game in the same manner I will rally the Fire Ireland crew into the hang Carpenter mob and back them on that one but for now we need to see if he can redeem himself. 28 points and our defense playing well would go far.
He looked good this week. These field goals were a lot closer and not as much pressure in the situations he kicked in this week. I want to see him make a game on the line 50+ yard field goal. Then he will be out of my doghouse. I'll be shaky will him till then.
I never blamed him for the two losses earlier in the season. I felt then and I still feel that he is one of the better kickers in the NFL. I was glad to see Philbin stick with him after his earlier misses from long distance. Most kickers go through a rough period sometime during a season. Hopefully Carpenter had his rough period and he will be fine the rest of this season.
This whole "fire Carpenter" nonsense is silly. No matter how bad or great a player is, there WILL be stretches where they will struggle. Jordan has gone through it, Marino, Tyson, Manning, Kobe, A-Rod, Gretzky, Maddux, N Ryan etc. so why is Carpenter getting crucified for going through a bad stretch? He's been pretty much the reason for MANY wins the past few years.
The right move was to stick with him...all the greats have slumps.. Is he partly responsible for two losses, yes, are the refs and the inordinate amount of ridiculous calls going against us responsible?, yes..team should be 6 and 1 easy...that with a rookie Qb and two new schemes to learn..pretty cool
Meh. He's a kicker. The only stat of a kicker that matters to me is: How many kicks can he make to win the game. He's not impressing me on that. If there's a better kicker to be had in the offseason, get him and don't look back.
I can't believe how anyone would blame Carpenter for the Cardinals loss, considering we were one 4th and 10 stop away from a W.
I will always blame the kicker for missing a FG (as long as it is makeable). If that missed FG was the difference in the game, then he gets blamed for the game too. The rest of the game is too influenced by forces that can't be controlled. If the game rests on a FG that means everyone else did enough to win.
We should look to upgrade in the offseason. Carpenter is not a clutch kicker. He can make long, hard to make field goals, but he has blown too many would-be game winners to be a clutch kicker. If we want to be a superbowl contender, we need a clutch kicker.
I don't blame him for that loss as much as the Jets loss. I do give him grief for it because after a game like the Jets that he had, you have to come back flawless in the next, he did not.
I want to see the guy build a time machine, go back in time and make those kicks he missed few weeks back. Also, make it so Bill Belichick pursues a career in interior design instead of football.
Us being a young team, you can say that IF he'd not missed those kicks, we'd be better, but no game is ever won or lost because of one player... There were opportunities for us to win both of those games outright. But the guy has, for the most part, been Mr. Reliable, but like you, I'm glad he's back to that level now...
Spot on Dj... And to think that this team should be improving as the season rolls on... When they stop having to think of the scheme and just execute they will be faster and execute quicker... and this is why this team shows improvments week by week... JMHO... and Offensively as well as Defensively, and don't forget Special teams, the DC, OC and ST coaches will implement new schemes for them to use... its all about how quick they learn their role and how much more they can absorb... Its all about QB, and COACHING... and we have been missing it for over a decade now...
I don't forget special teams, not when their this good, were going into the game knowing we're going to win that aspect if the game..
I was thinking about that earlier today......... Didn't he start out one of the last 2 seasons the same way.............missing some early field goals that lost a game or 2???
It was 33 yards. And just before he kicked it I turned my Bud Light label facing out It's like magic, only real.
