I've read a lot of comments that Matt Moore could step in this Sunday if Tannehill isn't ready. But I keep thinking back to how poorly MM looked in preseason vs. how well he played on Sunday. Were the Jets that bad? Has MM picked up the offense that much since preseason? I suspect the Jets did not provide much of a test for MM and I fear MM could quickly resemble his preseason form if he faces a better team. Just curious what others think.
MMoore does some things better than Tannehill at this point as long as that is what they ask him to do I think he'll be fine if he starts Sunday.
It's funny, I've often seen people say we should disregard preseason performance in favor of regular season play but this is the first time I've seen the reverse argument! Moore is in his fifth year in the NFL and his second year with us. He is a known quantity: a decent, not great, QB. Tannehill has way more upside than Moore, but he is a rookie who isn't (yet) lighting up the scoreboard. I'm comfortable with either one of them playing on Sunday.
If Moore needs to step in on game day don't worry he is a different player when it's a real game always has been. We are lucky at QB spot at the moment. And doesn't M Moore deserve some kudos for his great attitude from MVP last year to watching from the bench and turning instantly into a leader on the field?
Matt Moore struggles when he's pressured and when asked to throw the ball quickly and on time. He's at his best when he can sit in the pocket and throw deep passes. This system puts a premium on getting the ball out quickly. That's what he struggled with in the preseason in part b/c the OL allowed a ton of quick pressure. The OL has improved since. The Jets were not able to get much pressure so Moore was able to complete some deeper passes. When the Jets did get pressure, Moore played much like he did in preseason and Miami's offense stalled. There is no reason to disregard what he did in preseason b/c he struggled and excelled in the same areas. The only difference is our team improvement and the opponent worked to help avoid some of his problem areas. The Colts also struggle applying pressure. If the OL can give Moore time then Moore will be fine. If they can get quick pressure then Moore will struggle.
That was the story last week. The Jets had no preparation for Moore nor any solid film. Safe bet the Colts have a game plan for both QB's. The cat is out of the bag on MM coming off the bench. If by chance he has to start that worries the hell out of me.
