Especially when we have Thigpen who is a burner on returns (2 TD's this year). Bess is avg speed and isn't a threat on returns, so why is he back there? Never understood this.

He's only in when they're kicking to a short field. When there's no basically no chance at a return.

As BlameIt said, he is there because he has sure hands and won't turn it over deep in our territory.

But the thing is that you never know. You have to give the other team at least the threat that this guy could take it at anytime and go.

The last punt was actually a better indicator as to why he was in there. If they muff it and lose it, game is over. That's why Bess was in.

So he can watch it bounce over his head and roll out of bounds at the 1 yard line.

Hes there on a short field. More sure handed. They trust him not to make mistakes catching deep in our own territory. thats all there is to it really.

  14. It has to do with the CBA and the players union. The miami Dolphins are required to split returns under the new agreement terms or the whole league strikes.

There are zero circumstances where a punt returner should field a ball inside the 10. Ever notice coaches freak out when their guy fields a punt inside the 10?
