http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...-miami-dolphins-enduring-normal-growing-pains "When a rookie starts at quarterback, defensive coaches have to prepare for anything and everything. But after five games the rookie signal-caller's strengths and weaknesses become crystal clear on the game tape. What throws he likes to throw, what part of the field he likes to target, how he reacts to the speed of the game, how he handles pressure and how he performs under pressure. Because most rookies are limited in terms of the volume of offense at their disposal, defensive coordinators can get a good read on the young passer and take away what he does best. This cat-and-mouse game is much like a rookie basketball player who loves to go to his right all the time; naturally, the defense learns to force him left. How does he respond? Better question: Can he respond?
Inception-level translation: the team needs to fire its current GM and hire me to build a better replacement around THill.
If you studied the performance of rookie QBs, you'd find that the overwhelming majority of them play at the average NFL level or poorer, regardless of whom they have around them, and there is no reason to believe Ryan Tannehill would be bucking that trend if his surrounding cast was different. As much as we'd like to believe so in order to confirm our own personal viewpoints, Jeff Ireland and the talent of the roster don't explain everything there is about the team.
Had that dude pegged three years ago, said he would turn into what he is today, and why his weaknesses would eventually get exposed...nobody thought I had justification.
the argument commensed because of the level you all were putting him at..which he clearly did not deserve..and clearly you were wrong about his future, it's gone downhill in case you haven't noticed
Maybe its just me...but Im just as high on Tannehill that I was before. Hes a rookie.....this **** happens.....Im not loosing an ounce of confidence in him...
And season is not over just yet, I thought if we started MMoore we'd possibly make the playoffs, with Tannehill we simply are not going to win a lot this yr, BUT, if we show promise and have a raft of high draft picks the season is not lost.
And it's rising back up, in case you haven't noticed. Besides, you weren't saying he's going to decline. Even when he was putting up numbers very few QBS were putting up, you were saying he's overrated. Based on his throwing motion. There was no justification in that.
After watching the preseason I would not have been surprised if MMoore was flat out cut. Pat Devlin looked much better. After watching the 2nd Jest game I had a very different opinion. Apparently, he couldn't pick up the new offense fast enough to beat out the rookie but is now the best QB on the team. Interesting dilemma for sure.
True, and tbh, this demoralizes the Vets, they know MMoore can win games, but they won't play him. This is one of the problems with a transition season, Sparano's guys will be gone by next yr, and Philbin's choices will populate the roster imo.
We'll have to see if Andrew Luck, RG3, and Russell Wilson hit any "rookie walls." RG3 threw four TDs today and had a QB rating of 158 and a YPA over 13. He might just run through that wall.
I don't think it's a coincidence that both Weeden and Tannehill are the least productive of the rookie QB class, considering what they both have to work with.
But this is his 3rd year in this style offense. Using that theory would doom any QB. I believe it is tried. However, coaches work extremely hard at hiding tendencies. I believe it is part of it but maybe only 10-15%. It is also personel and inability to read defenses and the disguise. Marino was a master and quick study at defenses maybe it's time to give him a call in the off season.
But yet Chad Pennington had less to work with in 2008, he had a 97 QB rating, and the team went 11-5 and made the playoffs.
I saw that thread. I disagree that Pennington had less to work with. I think the line, TEs, and running backs were all better. I'll agree to disagree with you if you don't think so. Also, I think Pennington was by far a better QB than Tannehill.
Regardless, he didn't have 27 QB rating points and 4.6 wins (projected) more to work with. It's not like the offense was teeming with talent compared to this one. Hell, the starting receivers, which is what everybody whines about here, were Ted Ginn and Greg Camarillo.
The WRs were bad. TEs, on the other hand, accounted for 11 of his 19 TDs. Well be lucky to get 11 passing TDs this year combined.
Luck and RGIII were also universally considered more talented than Weeden and Tannehill. That's why they were drafted higher. Greater talent is a more-than-adequate explanation for superior play. Wilson has surprised a lot of people, though.
Tannehill was inexperienced coming in and had weakness defenses had caught on to. This was expected. He wasn't meant to play this season anyway. The injury to Garrard forced him to start but it's going to make him better. Let him learn from his mistakes now. Let him take the pounding. He'll come good in the end.
It's actually the entire point, that the quality of the QB, rather than the talent around him, drives the bus. Sound good Clark?
Wasn't the talent level largely the same in 09? Why didn't we win with him as QB? Why did he post a 76 QB rating? 08 had more offensive talent 08 had a great running game (CP didn't have the entire game on his shoulders) 08 had the wildcat 08 had better defense which created turnovers 08 had a vet QB There's plenty of reasons why we were successful in 08 that are unrelated to Miami's current situation. But feel free to keep posting the same thing in every thread on page one. I enjoy re-reading that Miami was somehow less talented in 08 with no factual basis.
2008 Chad Pennington: 8 years into his career 2012 RT: 10 games into his career <beating head against the wall>
Good news. See if you can get things to rattle around in there to where your reading comprehension improves.
I can think of 4 possible reasons for not being able to win with Pennington at the beginning of 09: 1. we had a tough time in the beginning of 09 is because it was the beginning. 2. teams that you initially play had the entire off season to dissect what Miami was doing and game plan/prepare for what we were doing. 3. We had Tony Sparano as our coach. 4. Mentality - Why change what got you to 12-4
