Use whatever definition of "franchise QB" you wish, since I doubt there's significant variation in that among the folks here.

As much as I would like another Marino, I would rather have a Payton Manning over Dan. I believe Dan never watched film & just threw to the open man that he saw. I'm not sure if I heard this right or not but IIRC, I heard that Tanny want's to be a doctor when he's done or something like that. Due to that, I believe that gives him an edge but we'll find out in time if it does or not.

I believe Tanny has it in him to be a franchise QB but the coaching staff needs to take the training wheels off of him. Let him make his mistakes early so he can learn from them. We all see the tangibles, it's time to let him loose & see what he can do. I'm not sure if his knee injuries has anything to do with his recent poor play or not but you can't play conservative with him. I can understand if we had a great running game & great defense but as we all know, we don't have any of them. With how our OL is playing, lack of running game, lack of separation from our WR's & our DB's playing hot potato with INT's. There is no way we can make the playoffs unless a miracle happens.

I said yes ... but until they get him a couple of legit play makers ... he'll struggle. Teams are stacking the box and playing single cover press on our plethora of possession receivers. They know none of our pass catchers can beat single coverage consistently. We've got no one that scares teams into doubling them on nearly every play. So we see a lot of single safety high, multiple blitzes, and a stacked box. For a rookie QB ... that is asking a lot IMO. Especially one with so few starts at QB in his college career. Then you add in the O-Line struggles. Long is a shell of his pre-injury self, the rest are a missed assignment waiting to happen outside of Pouncy.

Right now I think there are only six franchise QB's in the entire NFL. Both the Manning's, Brees, Rodgers, Brady and Roethlisberger. These are QB's who consistently show that they can take their teams on their backs in the fourth quarter of a game and lead them from behind to victory. They have also shown that they can lead their teams to the playoffs and win Super Bowls.

There are many good QB's in the NFL and several not so good QB's in the NFL. I think it is far to early to tell which area Tannehill will fall into during his NFL career. I think he is intelligent and has a good arm. He is athletic and I think he can become a good NFL QB going forward. I just think that franchise QB's are extremely rare and the only QB I see coming out of the 2012 draft getting into rare class of QB's is Andrew Luck. While RG3 could eventually reach the level of being a franchise type QB.

I believe Tannehill has the skills to be a very good QB in this league, but I just don't see him ever being a franchise type QB at the same level of the six QB's, I now see as the franchise QB's in the NFL. Considering what we have had at QB since Marino left. I'll take very good, even if it means he will never be a top tier franchise QB in the NFL.

To me a franchise QB is a QB with skills like Danny had. A QB who could shred your defense in his sleep. A QB who could put the ball in the tightest of tight spots. A QB who would throw the ball to places that other QB's could only dream about.

The answer to your question is I hope so, but probably not. Will Tannehill be serviceable, I think so but Franchise, ????

Hey Matt Ryan is a franchise QB according to most folks.

    5 INT's today.

How the hell did the Falcons still win that?

The other team's QB had a rating of 52.9, only 12.5 points higher than Ryan's, despite his five interceptions.

The other team's YPA was 1.5, and Ryan's, despite his five interceptions, was 6.5.

It's very hard to say based just on what we've seen so far, but as we can only go by what we've seen, my answer is no. He may indeed improve and become a franchise QB, but right now he hasn't shown me anything to make me beleive it.

Didn't vote because I think the word franchise is over used.

Do I think we can win a superbowl with Tannehill? The answer is yes.

If he's not able to see, feel, and maneuver from pressure with a lot more quickness and anticipation I would say no...

Dude needs to stop playing like a pendulum, and start getting dirty.

If he can engage some better instincts and athleticism into the play, he has the arm and accuracy down.

Ryan Tannehill has the all the tools to become very good Quarterback in the NFL. We know it was never the intention to start him this year, but the circumstances that took place put him in this position. The defenses have made adjustments and it will most likely be tougher sledding the rest of the year. There is NFL game film on him now, the scheme, and tendencies, etc. he's going to make rookie mistakes. To compound the challenge of being a rookie quarterback, there is a lack of talent around Tannehill. There isnt a deep threat or someone to stretch the field and keep the defense honest. Defenses are playing more man coverage, stacking the line of scrimmage, making it harder to run and making Tannehill play on a shorter field. Wr's are not getting enough separation. This also creates challenges in the blocking assignments when the defense stacks the box. Your not asking one defender to play two gaps. Tannehill has the skills and the intelligence, but It will take more talent around him to win.

Miami won't throw for under 200 yards in the last 4 of 5 games, like in 2008 and win games.

Put it this way, who would you say the Fins MVP is this year? I would say Wake would be the pick on defense with maybe Jones and Starks as close seconds (Would have said Smith before the last 3 weeks). Heck, you could argue Fields for his punting!

On Offense? You could say Pouncey and than Tannehill or Hartline.

So as a rookie he maybe our 6th best player.

I'm willing to go with Tannehill as our QB, we can win with him.

The kid has broke Marino's franchise rookie record. He was 1 yard short of the all time rookie passing record.

Clearly we should give up on him...

all he has to be is good. not great, good. get him weapons and he'll be fine. Phil Simms wasn't a "franchise" qb and he worked out just fine. that label is overused and truth be told i'm tired of it.

This kid had 19/20 QB starts in college, played WR for the other 2 1/2 years and was pretty good at it also. He now has 10 NFL starts under his belt ... some good, a couple ok and 2 very bad, he is a rookie so why are we jumping the gun so early in his career to ask this question?

Ok I know it's a forum and we debate things but gees give the kid a break, and a little more time before we ask him to hoist this team on his shoulders. Dan Marino, PLEASE, he's not even the best rookie QB at this point.

I will say he has shown the ability to be effective at both WR and QB, plus hes a real smart guy, so they tell us. He has some great skills and if given the proper coaching, to put him in position to make plays, I see no reason he can't be successful over time.

I don't know why some people, not saying that is you GaFin, just have to have a scapegoat every time the Dolphins play poorly and lose a game. Its like they have to have a specific player or players to put the blame on. They refuse to acknowledge that we just have holes on this team that haven't been filled yet and rookies are going to struggle unless they are surrounded with enough talent. I honestly don't know if Tannehill is going to be a true franchise quarterback who can put the team on his back and win games but he is a rookie and is going to have growing pains. I do think he could win us some games with his talent if he had good receivers, a good tight end and a decent running game. I think this season took a turn for the worse when our running game went away but that's just my opinion. If we think one player, be it a quarterback, a running back or any other individual player is going to come in and make the Dolphins an immediate winner or super bowl team without surrounding talent, then we are just fooling ourselves.

I think your assumption that all people on here define "franchise QB" the same or at least similarly is inaccurate. IMO a franchie QB is a player who you can build a franchise around. You don't have to constantly be searching FA, and the draft for your next QB. He doesn't necessarily have to be an elite player just a good player who can hold down the position successfully for a number of years. Over the years plenty of teams have won superbowls with franchise QBs. Names like Simms, Aikman and yes even Griese come to mind. An elite QB is one who is going to be in the top 3 to 5 year in and year out. Names like Brady, Manning, Marino and Elway come to mind. Unfortunately I think many people use the terms "franchise QB" and "elite QB" interchangably.

So back to the question. I've seen enough to say that Tannehill can be our franchise QB. Will he be an elite QB, that story is yet to be written.

Yes, different people have different meanings for "franchise QB." I have always used it to mean what you call an "elite QB." I don't use the two terms interchangeably though. What you call a "franchise QB" I just call a "good QB." I think we are talking about the same thing but using different verbiage and it leads to misunderstanding because we are using "franchise QB" to refer to different things.
