I suspect Alex Smith may have had the highest QB rating of anyone to lose his job (healthy) of all time.

If he doesn't, I am sure it is if you take the QB rating and multiply it by team wins with him as starter.

Tannehill is the best thing that's happened to this franchise since 62-7. He does everything Kaepernick can do with half the surrounding talent and far less experience.

I hate this thread. There is no point in thinking about the grass being greener on the other side. RT is our QB.

FWIW Tannehill doesn't have Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, and Veron Davis at his disposal. A top five QB would put up record numbers with that cast to throw to.

Kaepernick! Not even close. He is better in EVERY phase of the game. Even in what is supposed to be Tannehill's strong suit of throwing on the run Kap7 skills are superior.

Tannehill is probably the better WR? Maybe...

I posed a question because I was curious what this fanbase would say. Most have chosen Tannehill. A fair number have chosen Kaepernick.

Personally, I would choose Tannehill because I think he'll continue to improve and because I've never been sold on Kaepernick. If Kaepernick played in Miami and Tannehill played in San Fran I think Tannehill would come out even further ahead in fact.

So, for me anyways (and I posed the questionn to begin with) I prefer Tanehill.

Interesting to see where people's heads are at though.

My head is dispersed between Tannehill, Kap, Wilson, RG, and it's driving me crazy, I need this kid to find his game or I'm gonna be miserable.

The problem with drafting a kid with only 2 years starting in college is, you're gonna want to give him a pass for at least two and a half years in the pros because really, it's only after two and a half years in the NFL that he'll have the same number of QB starts as guys like Andrew Luck did after thier rookie season in the NFL... so wait... you actually need to give Tannehill 20 NFL starts just to get him to the end of his college career of QB starts, then you need to give him 16 starts as a rookie year in the NFL, then another 16 to see if he progresses in his second year.

You won't REALLY know the full book on Tannehill until he's played over 50 games in the NFL. lol. Jesus. That's into his FOURTH starting season.

When you think of it THAT way it's kind of extraordinary this kid's even doing as well as he is. Holy ****.

    Hmmmmm....

Interesting, do I want a guy that accounted for 141 career TDs in college, threw for over 10,000 yards and ran for 4,000, OR do I want a QB turned receiver turned back into a QB who shows promise and could have put up similar numbers had he been a 4 year starter at QB?

I really think they are similar QBs, and would be happy to build around either at this point. Tannehill gets the nod as of now.

And therein lies the issue IMO, you are right about the time. But as a fan it seems like that is all we have given and it is always comes down to every year saying we have to wait.

I believe in giving RT the time, I believe he is teh real deal. But when qb after qb is shuffled through, patience can be tough.

He didnt beat the NYG so that doesnt count. He had numerous possessions to win that game. I count that against him not for him. Plus I said vs a good defense and none from NO, NYG, DET had good D's last year. The Eagles were pretty good but we all know they choke in big spots. Always have under Reid. Ill say the Saints win was impressive because it was a playoff game and the Bengals game was impressive because Coyle did a good job with that team last year.

I never said they should. But since the rule changes I dont see how its deniable that great QB play has been taken to a whole different level of importance. Grossman was on a similar style team that relied on D and a good running game. Can Alex Smith's 49ers get there? Not so sure. But Grossman was the only average type QB to get there since the rules changed.

I didnt know about those stats til now and still cant locate them. :(

Either way, he looked lost and confused by what the NYG did to him in that NFC CG. I dont know how you didnt see it. Every possession from the time that SF tied it up with about 5 minutes to go til the time the NYG won he can be seen shaking his head and looking lost. His body language said it all.

The Pats have a better pass blocking line then run blocking. Last year the Pats long run was 33 yards. The next longest was 19. They didnt make teams pay with the run..they ran simply for balance and to run out the clock. I dont know how you can say or think otherwise.

Look at it since the rule changes with regards to PI/Other calls against the defense. Grossman is the worst QB to get there and he had a sick D backing him. Every other QB has at least performed at a pro bowl level and had multiple pro bowls throughout their career...Hasselbeck is the next worst on the list and he fits that criteria. Not gonna say other team should mail it in because eventually it will happen but the odds are lessened.

As for elite QB's: Add Luck, RG3 (they arent top 5 but they are franchise guys)...Stafford and Schaub are on the fence for me. Stafford has the ability to be elite, playe elite last year but not this year. Which QB is he? Schaub doesnt have elite stats this year but I think thats because they rely on the run game so much with the best back in the game and the best run blocking OL. Schaub can go win games when needed though....he might not be elite but he might be good enough. This year will be telling.

Romo is the anti clutch. Hes not elite.
Rivers throws more ints in bad spots than anyone sans Romo these days. His arm strength has diminished. Not sure he can ever be elite again.
    Newton...definitely not
    Dalton...Jury is still out.
Vick...may not get another starting job
    Flacco? LOL no.
Cutler? Makes too many dumb mistakes. Plus attitude prevents his progression.
Freeman? hes now had two good years of the last 3 but Id say hes good not great.

That's fine that you count it against him as long as you count it against the other QBs who didn't beat the Giants (Rodgers and Brady last year) and every single QB who has ever failed to win a game despite having opportunities to do so, which includes every single QB in NFL history dozens of times over.

Again, so what? None of the elite QBs are available. Should every team that doesn't have one bench the non-elite guy they have on the remote chance that the guy sitting on the bench might be one?

And of course Alex Smith's 49ers can get there. They were an OT FG away last year.

Here they are for that SF-NYG game last year. https://www.profootballfocus.com/da...=2011&gameid=2323&teamid=28&stats=p&playerid=

People see what they want or expect to see and draw inferences from body language that reflects that.

Long runs are a particularly poor measure of the run blocking effectiveness of an OL. After the first 10 yards or so, the OL becomes irrelavant and it is up to the RB and the receivers blocking downfield. Football Outsiders evaluates OLs based on their concept of Adjusted Line Yards (ALY) which gives the OL no credit for yards gained after the first 10. Notably, in 2011, the Patriots were the 2nd best run blocking team in the NFL at 4.53 per carry.
    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol2011

Using an entirely different methodology, PFF also ranked the Pats as the 2nd best run blocking team in the NFL last year. https://www.profootballfocus.com/data/by_team.php?tab=by_team&season=2011&teamid=-1&stats=&gameid=

That, along with what I saw, is how I can say or think the Pats had a good run blocking OL in 2011.

I'm not sure who you are aguing with on this. Good QBs are good to have. Bad QBs are bad to have. Elite QBs are great to have. But most teams don't have them. that doesn't mean teams should be benching their good QBs on the extremely remote chance that the backup will be an elite one.

I generally agree with all that and don't need to quibble about my small disagreements. But if teams should be benching good QBs simply because they aren't "elite" then guys like Rivers, Newton, Flacco, Freeman, Ryan, Stafford, etc. should all be benched. Is that really what you think?

I think all this means is that you should mortgage the house if necessary to get one of those elite guys.

For example, trade everything and move up to get RGIII, if your eval has him rated that high.

Or suck for Luck, the way I am sure Irsay told his Colts to do halfway into last season.

He gets it. And as a result, the Colts will win a Superbowl under Luck at some point.

Actually he is said to be a great young man. I personally don't have any tattoos, but I think it is very bigoted to judge a person based on the fact he or she happens to like tattoos on their body.
Tattoos certainly don't make someone a bad person. To judge someone based on body art on their body shows only shows how uninformed you are and these tattoos say absolutely nothing about the character of Kaepernick.

As far as which QB I would rather have as the Dolphins QB. I would rather have Luck, RG3, or Wilson, but between Kapernick and Tannehill, I would take Kapernick.

Because I think Luck, RG3, and Wilson will have better overall careers than Tannehill in the NFL. I have said all along that I think Luck and RG3 will be franchise QB's for years to come. I think Tannehill will be a decent NFL QB, but I don't see him ever being a franchise type QB.

As far as Tannehill and Kapernick goes. I think Harbaugh is a great coach and if he is willing to sit Smith and go with Kapernick, I am willing to think he sees that Kapernick is going to be a special QB in the NFL in the future.

I hope Tannehill ends up being a top tier QB in the NFL, but so far he has failed to convince me that he is anything but a QB who may or may not be the long term answer at the QB position for the Dolphins. I really don't think we will have an answer on Tannehill under after the 2014 season. If he hasn't shown the ability to be a quality QB by the end of that season. I would expect the Dolphins will be drafting another QB in the first round of the 2015 draft.

Hopefully he is the answer and the Dolphins won't have to worry about the position for several years to come.

I 1000% disagree with you. I respect you but I also believe you have become cynical on much of what happens here. To say RT doesnt have franchise level material is just nonsense IMO and in many expert opinions. The issue is his inexperience and whether his body of work translates into accurately predicting whwther he reaches that potential. He is a much higher bust risk than the other 3. but his ceiling is up there with theirs.

What I was saying to Bpk in another post is our past failures since Dan has made patience a hard thing to maintain. 12 games into a rookie year and many focus on teh downs and forget the up. They see teh sucess of others and because RT hasnt reached as high, its because he cant. It is the past that he made people expect failure. I see that in many here aboyut RT. I want to clarify that is my impression not saying that I know this as fact, this could not be why you or anyone doesnt feel like RT is that potential elite qb. I just dont see any other reason to say he cant be elite.

I am not a qb expert and dont claim to be. But I am not ignorant either. I stood behind Henne from day 1 but said day 1 he wasnt brady or Manning but was or could be a good qb. He isnt anywhere near elite but has had good and bad games but can play if teh talent around him plays well, he wont carry a team but can make plays. Fieldler was what he was. he was as good as any qb brought in to beat him out, and I stuck by sayiong stay with fielder. Because they didnt bring in anyone with a higher ceiling. Whats the point? the point is I can llook at qbs and see as well as anyone if the qb looks scared, learns from his mistakes, has poise, has teh skill set. doesnt get rattled. RT has the sill set and the mental make up, the question IMO is can he put it all together and then perform consistently? Never reaching potential is diff then never having it

I have absolutely no problem with you disagreeing on my assessment of Tannehill. I was merely expressing my opinion, based on what I have seen so far from him. I also stated that I want him to be a success and I thought it was going to be at least two more years before we will know if he is going to be a quality QB in the NFL or not.

I will also agree that I AM cynical about this organization at this time. I don't believe the overall talent on the roster is very good, or at least good enough to get beyond mediocre. I have no faith in Ross or Ireland and I think there is still a huge question as to whether or not Philbin is going to a good HC in the NFL.

I will also admit that I wasn't in favor of the Dolphins selecting Tannehill in the first round. This doesn't mean that I don't want to be proved wrong by Ireland, Ross,Philbin, and especially Tannehill.
Obviously I have been totally wrong about many things in my life and I will freely admit it. I have been a Dolphin fan since 1966. I want nothing more than for them to prove me totally wrong again in my view of the organization at this time.

I would love nothing more than to be able to espouse all the positives of this team and the front office. Unfortunately their record of 25-35 over the past three plus seasons just isn't positive. Especially when it believed by many on here that all the losing was because of Sparano. While I was no fan of Sparano, the fact is that the Dolphins are 5-7 at this time and they have played a very easy schedule this season. So obviously the problem wasn't the coaching, it must be the talent, or in this case, the lack of talent on the roster. Otherwise you have to conclude that Philbin is no upgrade over Sparano. Especially when the offense is averaging less points per game this year over 12 games than they did over their first 12 games last season.
