Some non emotional based thoughts on WR and our 2012 draft/FA (including Jon Martin)

I know none of you [outside of perhaps a few people] are happy with our receiver situation this year. Insult to injury we hear it from announcers on a weekly basis how this group is lackluster and doesn't scare anyone, and anyone who has read my posts knows I'm a huge proponent of upgrading the unit.

We hear the same basic complaint over and over: "Ireland doesn't care about the WR position and refuses to address it."
It's quite understandable to share that opinion based on what's currently seen before our eyes, but let's take a step back for a minute, absent emotion, and look at what happened and is happening.

    1. We're short 2 receivers who were with us when preseason began.
    • Clyde Gates, a player with some talent, was begrudgingly cut because Philbin didn't feel his route running inability was a fit for his offense. That wasn't foreseen by anyone, Ireland included.
    • Chad Johnson-- the guy who rededicated himself this offseason and would've been our top target, allowing the rest of the offense to temporarily fall into place with Bess seeing more action in the slot where he belongs and Hartline no longer needed to be "the man". We'd be moving the ball more efficiently while Johnson offers improved playmaking ability and RZ scoring potential. Unfortunately, he screwed up and got himself cut.

    2. Building a winning team isn't just about a 1 year approach. Gotta look toward the future as well. With that in mind, what does our signing of Johnson tell? It tells us Ireland & Philbin care about WR or else they wouldn't have signed him to begin with and Ireland wouldn't have said, "We've got fours, fives and sixes. What we need are threes, twos and ones.". Johnson's 1 year contract also tells us something---- that Chad didn't represent the long term solution, which means, if we care about WR but Johnson doesn't represent the long term solution, then the long term solution likely wanted to be addressed in 2013 with all the FA money & draft picks available, with Chad Johnson serving to temporarily holding us over.

    3. We don't know if any initial plans fell through for James Jones. He was Philbin's receiver in GB, and there were talks about Ireland working hard to bring in someone decent via trade. However, with Jennings dealing with preseason injuries, Driver being a grandpa, and Jones looking great in camp, it's quite possible GB shut that door despite a potential early handshake being made. Therefore we could've very well been holding out for Jones considering how late in the offseason we signed Johnson (June 11th), and by that point all the other receivers had been signed (Vincent Jackson & Pierre Garcon in March and Manningham in April). Not to mention Brandon Marshall was traded the day Vincent Jackson & Garcon signed their new contracts, so it makes no financial sense to go after Jackson or Garcon while Marshall's huge contract was already on our books. Going after James Jones [$2.3 million] would've made a ton of sense considering his familiarity with coach Philbin and considering how much emphasis Philbin places on route running and learning the system before seeing action.

    4. Jon Martin. It's understandable for fans to want that shiny new 2nd round WR, but it's time to face the fact that Martin might be a blessing in disguise considering the recent events involving Jake. Martin provides us leverage and might've just saved us a gob of cap space in not having to be backed into a corner to to re-sign Jake. Plus, Martin will be a year seasoned by 2013. If you guys think it's bad passing on a 2nd round receiver for a tackle, then how would you feel about having to draft a left tackle AND right tackle next year and basically being forced to start both of them? That would've left us little draft wiggle room and most likely cost us a 1st & 2nd rounder on linemen. Either way we would've spent a high pick at tackle this year or in 2013, so does it really matter how we sliced it? ----> tackle this year and WR next or WR this year and tackle next? It makes more sense in my eyes to do what we did--- take one tackle this year and then potentially take one in 2013 so that we're not left drafting and starting 2 high-pick rookies simultaneously, which is a recipe for QB disaster. As important as it is to get Tannehill weapons, it's even more important to ensure his protection.

Added, anyone complaining about Martin needs to realize how rare it is for a rookie to start at left tackle and play ok, let alone a kid who should still be a senior in college.

Here's something interesting to ponder regarding Martin:
    • If he had stayed his senior year at Stanford he's likely a potential top 15 pick in 2013 considering he has 1st round talent and is coming off 2 straight 1st Team All American seasons..... which means he's no longer our 2nd round pick..... which means we likely still have a hole at right tackle considering there was no one else in the 2nd round to draft (as Mike Adams might not be a good fit for our zone blocking scheme). Considering we traded up for the talented Lamar Miller in the 4th round, I doubt we pass on him for Bobby Massie.
    • Now with Jake's injury woes, we potentially have a huge hole at LT.
    • Considering both of these holes in this scenario, it's quite possible we'd actually STILL be drafting Martin in 2013, except it'd cost us our 1st rounder to do so. How 'bout that.
    • So essentially, not only might we have just saved ourselves a 1st rounder by taking Martin as a junior, but we also get to marinate him for a year while not having to worry about starting 2 bookend rookies from day 1 like Jacksonville in 2009 after spending 1st & 2nd rounders on Monroe and Britton. Like I said, potential blessing in disguise.

    5. Now we likely have our future LT in case Long is a no-go which provides us greater FA & draft flexibility to address WR, which is a big relief. Tannehill is Ireland's meal ticket and golden boy. He didn't draft him in the top 10 and bring in a coaching staff/system meant to help him thrive just to stop there. It sucks we had to trade Marshall, but it was a necessary evil. It sucks Johnson couldn't control himself. It sucks Gates was cut. It sucks we couldn't land Jones. I don't expect our luck to be as bad next year as we don't have money tied up in the position to prevent from signing an impact player, and we've got the cap space and draft picks to work with. I fully expect to see big changes, as there's no excuse next year if it doesn't happen.

I tend to agree that moves were attempted and they didn't happen. There's no way they thought we were set but it's probable that they didn't see an answer. I'm glad were not paying big money for some random avg. Wr though.

They also brought In gaffney and Anthony Armstrong. It's not like they didn't try.

With that said, Ireland still should go.

And I'm all for letting long walk.

Personally thought Garner and Martin held up well enough

    Thought the Wr's did alright

Think Coyle is beginning to get his sea legs as a DefCord

All in all we are going in a good direction, I'm happy with Philbin/Coyle/Rizzi/Sherman

    Just tired of the losing.

Let's be objective here, we are in a better place with Garner/Martin then we were in 2011, we can seriously think about letting Jake walk AND have a basis for doing so.

PFF doesn't like Martin, from what I've seen he's done fine and you can see the upside.

Trading for James Jones would have been a terrible decision if he cost anything close to what was assumed in the offseason. He'd be better than nothing as a #3 wide receiver, but a pretty **** investment at the end of the day.

There's no way he wouldn't of been better than Bess and Hartline. Def didn't drop as many passes as either too.

DBess is on track as well

Oddly enough, Charles Clay may top Fasano in yds.

James Jones is quite well known for dropping passes.

He's the Packers #1 wide receiver, and he's completely wilted under pressure. He's essentially the poster child for wilting under pressure.

What games have you been watching this year? He's dropped 1 pass on the season. 6 for Bess, 3 for Hartline.

All that pressure didn't stop him from catching 9 TDs either.

    See above.

was at the game yesterday, and I was taken aback by how little separation our WR's get AND how slow they are.

The WR's left three TD's on the field yesterday. First was the Hartline catch that he got tackled by the wind of the DB that ran by him (no way he should not have scored there). Second, was the incomplete pass to Moore. Moore clearly slowed WAY down when he initially turned to look back. As it was happening I thought he was giving up on the play and then was like oh crap… He runs hard through out the entire route he catches the ball and scores. The last was the over throw to Bess. Let me just say up front that Bess is my favorite Dolphin but goddamn he is slow. Any receiver with any kind of speed gets to that ball. BTW, Bess got behind the defense they just caught up to him by the time the ball was landing in the endzone. Our WR's are just flat out slow.

And I'd still take his production. He's got 7 more TDs than Bess and Hartline combined.

9 TD's....is that a joke? Here, 9 TD's is far and away the number 1 receiver and he'd be assumed to have had a 5th-3rd round cost. With the sheer amount of people with catches in GB, I have no doubt he'd be a 1,000 yard receiver here. He is no doubt better than what we have. Brian Hartline and Davone Bess are getting yards because we have no other receivers. Jones is getting production in an offense with Cobb having 71 catches, Nelson with 46, and Finley with 43.

James Jones WAS quite well known for dropping passes yet he still had a higher catch % than Hartline. You're grasping at old news and things that don't hold true in order to justify a nonsense position that someone with 9 TD'd would be a number 3 receiver in Miami.

As for him being the number one receiver, what are you even talking about? Cobb has the most targets and receptions (71 receptions), and going based on last season, Nelson is the number 1. Jennings would be 1-2 if he were healthy. Nelson is the one who has wilted. He has the same amount of catches as Jones and 3 less touchdowns although he averages approx. 2.2 YPC more.

Why would you have no doubts on this?

He's got more passing down snaps than Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, and every other non-Aaron Rodgers player on the Packers roster by a wide margin. He's out there on the field, and if he were any good, he'd be way more productive than he would be.

Quick question...If the Dolphins put Davone Bess and Brian Hartline on IR right now, how far behind would James Jones be in terms of yardage at the end of the season of either of them?

I respectfully disagree about "being nothing more than a #3". In an offense designed around spreading the ball around, he wouldn't be a "#3". He would've been an extra option, the most talented receiver on the team, a guy who can play on the perimeter to let Bess stay in the slot, and a player who can make plays with the ball in his hand and provide some redzone ability. He's vastly improved this year, and GB has taken note.... and it's why Jennings will be allowed to walk. Cobb plays the slot; Nelson is on one side; Jones is on the other. If he's good enough as a starter to help make GB's offense run, he'd be good enough here. I wouldn't have given up a 2nd for him, but a 3rd? yes.

If Jones weren't any good he wouldn't be stealing 9 TDs of production from Nelson, Cobb, Finley, and with Driver & Jennings sprinkled in.

See the first TD of the video, which we have nothing of the sort this year and wont have with Bess & Hartline as the primary 2 options.

Please, by all means justify him over Plaxico Burress at this point.

PS, another James Jones fun fact: He's not broken 100 yards in a game this year, despite being the Packers #1 wide receiver.

He has however broken 100 yards in the last 4 games, just barely.

you share my desire to blow up the receiving corps...lets assume Jeffy stays ...are you sure HE wants to revamp the group? if Ireland stays, more than likely Hartline stays, Fasano stays, maybe he'll add a Mike Wallace but that will be enough for him...then when teams put their best corner on Hartline and double Wallace = passing game shut down.

and Martin is one of the worst tackles in football, only Ireland can find the ONE tackle worse than Marc Columbo.

agree with you 100 percent. tannehill has to make perfect passes to even get a completion most of the time. playmakers make plays, hartline is what he is, he is a very good possession receiver, he would make a pretty good #2 and bess a good #3. we dont even have a #3 receiver, our best #3 wide receiver is marlon moore and he has 8 catches for 83 yards. put that in perspective javorskie lane has 7 catches and he is a full back.

then look at other teams #3 receivers
who have 500+ yards and we want to know why we are struggling.

the dolphins need a true #1 receiver and a playmaker at tight end.

So? They wouldn't be doing that in Green Bay with Nelson, Cobb, Jennings, Jones, and Driver. One would be the #6 receiver fortunate to see snaps with Jennings injured all year, and the other would've been cut.

  30. CaribPhin

This is a double edged sword. If he wasn't valuable, why would he have as many snaps as he does? Obviously he's on the field doing something right. On a team with the riches at receiver as GB, it's impressive that he's out there on so many offensive snaps.

EDIT: There's also the possibility that he's a good blocker and remains in on all of the running plays (which is actually true). But hey, the fact that Tannehill has played approx. 100 snaps with at least one of our two receivers off the field tells me they're not as valuable as we'd think.

Is this the attempt at telling me Hartline is better because he's had a 100 yard game?

There's already a world of information to show why Jones is better in this thread alone. Hartline's 110 targets to Jones' 74 is a pretty big gap in alleged number 1 WRs as well.

    lol @ Plaxico though.

The Packers have that exact same philosophy with arguably the best quarterback in the league, and he's not doing anything.

He's not in any sense getting crowded out by any of his peers, either. He's got 524 passing down snaps. The next closest players have 404, 384, and 372 respectively.

He's a red zone specialist at best.

Bad decision making by the Packers?

No, Hartline is better because he's light-years more productive.

There's really no reason why Hartline should have that many more targets than Jones. Jones is on the field significantly more than Brian Hartline is, with a much better quarterback.

Jones doesn't have to break 100 yards a game when there are other guys contributing.

I'm a little lost, Dis. You argue about not needing a #1 WR (like in the Marshall debate) but then you seem to be focused on "100 yard games" in this thread as if feeding one receiver is more important than ball distribution.

Yea he's the best when you're looking for someone to fall over on the slightest hint of contact or play as small as possible. And he's very productive for having 110 targets, 950 yards and 1 TD. 1 TD for Hartline yet Jones wilts under pressure. Light years ahead lol

James doesn't get credit for what those other players are producing.

It was mostly for the purposes of pointing out how unproductive Jones has been this year.

Seriously, 100 yards in the last 4 games. Games he had 98, 94, 99, and 93% snap percentages in. The guy is out of his league as a starter.

Are you telling me 600 something yards and slowing down is anything close to acceptable for a full time receiver in the Packers offense
