Word up here is that the Jets don't intend to bring him back next season. As we all know, we could use a weapon on offense. He has some minor injury concerns but when he's out there he's a pretty good player. All of this with Mark Sanchez at QB.

    Discuss.

Dustin Keller appears to be a better or more experienced version of Michael Egnew. A version of Michael Egnew that is proven to be at least a little effective in the NFL.

If the asking price isn't too steep, I'd sure take a look.

Surprising if they do end up letting him go. I thought he was one of sanchez's favorite targets. I'm all for bringing him in.

I think ultimately you got to look into the position in the context of Joe Philbin/Mike Sherman's offense. A guy who can't block in-line is going to be split wide.

Dustin Keller is a bad in-line blocker, but he's a better receiver from that position than he is split wide, which I think might be problematic. I don't know if he can play an H-Back position as well as Charles Clay either.

Jared Cook I think is a pretty nice alternative. He's basically a giant slot receiver, he's running nearly 80% of his routes from the slot.

I think it's also possible that Antonio Gates and Jermichael Finley are on the open market or up for trade.

If these things are true, then why draft Egnew?

Their interest in Egnew indicates that Keller would generate interest?

Were Egnew and Keller not similar players with similar strengths and weaknesses coming out of college?

I would rather pick up one of Eiffert/Fauria/Toilolo/Ertz through the draft than sign one of the would be FAs.

I think Egnew is a guy you can split out wide, Keller not so much.

I think even among "receiving" tight ends, there are guys who are better off playing in-line than split out wide.

Egnew I think they want to be like Jermichael Finley, someone who can play more frequently like a wide receiver than a tight end. Dustin Keller I think might be a guy who is best playing in-line, even if he can't block. He's generally better as a receiver in-line, but I think there's a question if his receiving is going to be less efficient and his value lessened if you try to mitigate it as a wide guy.

I feel like I see Keller split out wide a lot. Maybe I'm mistaken though.

But I see two guys with very similar skill sets. And one guy has used those skill sets to become at least serviceable in the NFL with Mark Sanchez at QB.

We'll see. Maybe they are looking for a better in-line blocker though. I'd take Jared Cook over Keller for sure. But I think Keller might be easier to acquire.

He's a superior receiver that teams actually have to worrry about down the field.

Mods can delete it if it's out of line, but Keller was split out the highest % of his career this year, and here's PFFs stats:

He's playing 60% of his receiving snaps in the slot, and he's got 15 catches for 153 yard, and 1.19 yards per route run.

In-line, he's got 13 catches for 163 yards, and he's got 1.96 yards per route run.

In context, 1.96 overall would be tied for 2nd highest among tight ends, 1.19 tied for 31st.

I don't know if it's really true. So far this year he's got 7 catches of 20+ yards, Fasano had 12 last year.

This year the Dolphins have very much made a decision to make Anthony Fasano a safety valve.

    So I wasn't imagining that.

But yes, it does seem he's more effective in-line.

Have you watched him play? He actually plays to his size, has good hands, and is a better route runner.

Why would you look to a TE to have a lot of 20+ catches? Especially one that's in an offense w Cruz, Nicks, and the rest of the downfield WRs they have. They use Bennett on a lot of shorter routes and in the RZ much more than down the seem.

Because Eli throws to him. But yes, Martellus Bennett has had a good season. But I am sure Fasano can duplicate that production with better QB play.

The Jets have a terrible offense and they don't want to bring back Keller. Why would the Dolphins have any interest in an often injured TE who the Jets don't want any longer? No, I have absolutely no interest in seeing the Dolphins sign Kellar.

Jared Cook or a Antonio Gates reclamation project would be inspired moves.

    I fear Jermichael Finley.

I don't really agree with any of that. He's about as close a player as you can get to Anthony Fasano without being him.

You said he was a receiver teams have to worry about down the field?

He's never missed a game in his career outside of this year, and not wanting someone because a bad team didn't want him is a really ****ty basis for talent evaluation. There are good players on bad teams.

    Completely disagree.

Yes, they have to worry about him all over the field. Just bc they've used him mostly on shorter stuff lately, doesn't mean he can't run deep routes as well. Like I said, they have Nicks and Cruz, it wouldn't make a ton of sense to throw Bennett deep most of the time.
