I had reported earlier this season that Jeff Ireland explored the WR market and that the two main guys he sought to acquire were Nate Washington and Jeremy Maclin.

At the time, I was told that the Maclin trade was a no go from the start.

I now have a pretty strong indication from somebody very very close to the situation, that the Nate Washington deal was D.O.A, but the Maclin deal was close to being consummated.

The compensation is still not clear, but I now have information that tells me that it was upwards of a 2nd round pick, and that it was the Eagles that balked when the Dolphins had agreed to demands.

This is what I wanted when they traded Marshall. This would have been a home run. I feel better knowing that our GM isn't completely clueless.

Failure to seal the deal is as bad as failure to me at least.

    Have to close.

Not sure how I would've felt about a 2nd for Maclin. Wouldn't have been the worst trade, I suppose. His contract is up pretty soon though, right?

    No, it shouldn't change anything.

I think it was pretty safe to assume that Ireland did not desire to go into the season with only Hartline and Bess as viable receivers, and that he attempted to explore alternate opportunities after Chad Johnson committed career suicide. I think a lot of people rationally know that but choose to go with the emotional response.

I think this was also mentioned early this season that the Dolphins had explored Maclin and Washington as serious trade opportunities.

Well, the Eagles rejected the 2nd so it couldn't have been all too bad, right. That would've been awesome to have flipped Vontae for Maclin.

I'm glad he didn't seal the deal on Orton, Palmer, Kolb, Flynn, etc. And what happened to all the Ryan Mallett fans? He coulda sealed the deal on a franchise QB but he chose A Center instead. Typical Irish. What a bum.

Sure there is. It makes the fans happy. We got Lamar Gordon for a 3rd rounder after Ricky retired. Gave the fans a warm fuzzy feeling inside. 65 yards on 35 carries. For the season.

Maclin for a 2 is a good trade IMO. Perhaps Reid balked b/c future draft picks are useless when his *** was on the line this season.

Now if he would have been close to acquiring Calvin or Larry for a 2nd I might be impressed, but can't find myself giving him credit for not being able to make a trade he wanted. I imagine there are 32 GMs that have tried to make a trade they weren't able to pull off.

It's nice to see he had a contingency plans in place after dealing Marshall.

Unfortunately, none of those contingency plans worked out (Maclin, Washington, Naanee, Johnson, Armstrong). And that's gotta be on him, IMO.

Although I'm upset with this failure from him, and see him in a more negative light because of it, I'm certainly not one of those "He has zero ability at ever finding a good WR ever ever ever" people.

He has found two pretty viable WRs with minimal resources in Bess and Hartline. Now, I'm curious to see what he can find when spending valuable resources like a 1st or 2nd round pick.

Basically, Ireland has only really struck out on one WR that he invested a prime resource in, IMO. That being Pat Turner.

He spent valuable resources on Marshall, who in the right situations is a top 5 WR.

I don't know why there's a belief that he'll automatically swing and miss if he tries drafting one early.

My Beef has and always will be his unwillingness to invest the semi-valuable resources at WR, particularly this offseason

Look, I think my stance on this whole Ireland thing is pretty clear and documented. I have battled Section more than any other on the Marshall trade. If he's seeing the other side of it, let's not bag on him for it and just be happy people are starting to come around.

There you all have it, I stuck up for Section. If I believed in souls, mine would feel so unclean right now.

    Completely agree.

Setting the Domestic Assault arrest aside, Chad Johnson has still not been picked up by another team. This tells me that Chad Johnson, even prior to the arrest, garnered little interest elsewhere around the league. It's very possible that had he not been arrested, he'd have been cut here too.

Maclin's had injury issues, yes? Upwards of a second is rather costly regardless. I wouldn't have done it but I can see where Joe Philbin sees a fit schematically. I still think Quinton Patton of Louisiana Tech is going to be on the radar and I know they've already got quite a list of names -- some very quality, including ball-carriers -- at various positions that they're doing work on. Patton fits the mold and will be in the region where Philbin will probably prefer to select a wideout; it should be noted though that my assumption is based off of the track record with Ted Thompson -- for whatever that's worth.

My concern with Johnson (or is it Ochocinco?) was that he was particularly slow getting off the line during his brief New England stay. He just didn't look good and frankly, he didn't look so good in Miami either.

Why? Because he couldn't get on the field with the Patriots? Basically that means he couldn't beat out Deion Branch. That doesn't mean he's useless as a player. He certainly wasn't going to be the Chad Johnson of old, but I think he could have been a viable 3rd receiver.

Ball-carriers in terms of runningback? If so I'm glad to hear it.

Also, nice call on Reggie Bush. I was probably a bit..optimistic this offseason on him.

I'd have taken a straight up Vontae for Maclin trade based on Vontae's play this season when healthy. That's essentially what this would have been.

    Alright, alright. You win.

But did anyone think that Ireland was just sitting around thinking we were good enough at WR and not even trying to make some additions? If people think he's that dumb then they are the dumb ones.

    Cease fire.

But then why hasn't another team taken a shot on him? Why didn't the Jets give him a call when Santonio Holmes went down? Or a plethora of other teams who suffered injuries and could've used a veteran presence on their team?

If he had irons in the fire on one deal but had to close another (Marshall) I can commend him for not creating a massive hole without a plan in place, which is how it first appeared. Sometimes, deals just go bad at the last minute.

We are going to have him this offseason at least. As much as everyone (including myself) wants him fired, we have to HOPE he has the offseason of his life and turns this thing around.
