This is one of my favorite draft eligible Tight Ends. For me, he might even battle Coby Fleener for top honors. He has a combination of pedigree (Christian Fauria's nephew), explosiveness and size that are outstanding in a Tight End prospect, and this year's Tight End class looks like it could be (again) pretty weak, so the temptation to come out could be strong.

He is a full 6'7" and 250+ pounds. He moves well and just as importantly, he's explosive. He averaged 14.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in High School as a Forward.

Here are some clips of him. He is #8.

(Time Index 0:00 - Fauria uncovers and catches touchdown in the end zone)

(Time Index 0:15 - Fauria dunking, for fun...if you watch the whole video, Fauria's actually a really good shooter)

Joseph Fauria appeared in all 12 games of the 2010 season on special teams and on offense, but didn't have his first catch until the 7th game of the year against Oregon. He caught two more balls during the final two games of the season, both touchdowns. This year he's played in all 7 games as far as I can tell, and has caught 15 balls for 216 yards and 4 more TDs. He by far leads his team in TD receptions. The rest of the team combined only has 5 TD receptions where he has 4 of them.

The question I suppose is whether Joseph will come out, and I don't pretend to know the answer to that question. I think he will, based on circumstances.

If you think about it, college has not been kind to Joseph Fauria. He was a 4-Star recruit and was on his way to great things at Notre Dame, especially after Will Yeatman was dismissed for being caught drinking underage at a party (plus a little resisting arrest and giving false information spiced in). He and Kyle Rudolph would have been the two Tight Ends and then Rudolph would have went to the NFL this year and Fauria would be the top guy catching passes there under Brian Kelly.

At this point, he's got a 3.0 GPA and is a good student, good character, and one day he decides to play a prank on a priest by slapping his butt as he walked to class. But the priest filed sexual harrassment against Fauria for the incident, and ResLife suspended Fauria from campus for the winter semester (i.e. football season) no questions asked, with no appeals allowed. Evidently, Notre Dame ResLife has a reputation for this kind of unbelievable hard-headedness and jackassery.

Rather than serve the suspension at Notre Dame and come back to the team in 2010, Fauria was (understandably) so pissed off that he transferred to UCLA, which was his runner-up choice out of High School. His High School quarterback, Kevin Prince, was the quarterback at UCLA at the time. He gets to UCLA and sits out the 2009 season that he would have missed whether he stayed at Notre Dame or not, but he hardly got any playing time in 2010 as they went 4-8. This year, they're 3-4 and his buddy Kevin Prince had been dusted pretty thoroughly by Richard Brehaut until Brehaut broke his leg against Washington State. Now Prince is the QB again, and Brehaut is likely out for the year, but I doubt Prince is taking snaps ahead of Brehaut by 2012.

So to me, the reasons you stay in school are usually: 1) To get your degree, 2) Because you still haven't played enough to show your stuff, 3) To stay with teammates you're close to, 4) If you're a transfer and you've only played one year you might stay an extra year out of a sense of obligation (e.g. Ryan Mallett), 5) Scouts give you a bad Advisory grade.

With Joseph Fauria, you can strike out 1 thru 4, because he should have his degree in hand, he's getting a chance to show his stuff this year and leads his team (by far) in touchdown catches, his buddy Kevin Prince who was his High School quarterback and one of the big reasons he transferred to UCLA is likely a bench warmer next year, and this is his second year of actually playing at UCLA. The only thing left is the Advisory grade, which is notoriously inaccurate and understated. I think he could come out regardless of the grade.

This is the kind of guy I want Miami to draft in order to keep up with some of the trends we're seeing out there with guys like Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski.

Nice prospect. Thanks for the clips. He seems in the Kyle Rudolph mold.

A priest doing the suing for sexual harassment? That's a new one.

I like ex basketball players; they seem pre-programmed to attack the ball well.

Not all are, unforunately. Some will go up and snatch the ball like a rebound while others will go up and engulf the ball.

If we get Luck in 1st round & Fleener is still there at the top of round two ... Its a no brainer to me to take a player that Andrew already has chemistry with ... especially if Fleener is good value there

GBN ranks him 44th overall which equates to a mid 2nd round ranking & not really much of a reach at the top of round 2
Kiper actually ranks teammate George Bryan over Fleener (head scratch)

Do you mean NC State George Bryan? You need a sun dial to time that guy. He's nothing like what this team needs unless you want another Fasano type. IMO you don't reach for Fleener with the #33 pick, especially when there's a decent chance he'll be there at the top of the 3rd.

Ah yeah ... when I looked at Kiper's rankings I saw the big "S" and mistook it for Stanford since its similar ... here is where I saw the info: http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/insider/columns/story?columnist=kiper_jr_mel&id=6436817

Top 5 TE
1 George Bryan 6-5 265 32 344 10.8 37 3 0
2 Michael Egnew 6-4 241 83 698 8.4 29 4 0
3 David Paulson 6-4 241 21 370 17.6 61 40
4 Coby Fleener 6-6 248 28 434 15.5 58 7 0
5 Ladarius Green 6-6 230 44 794 18.0 63 7 0

As for wanting him ... no, never said that ... I was actually confused why Kiper had him ranked over Fleener ... I didn't even know who Bryan was until I read those rankings from the link

As for reaching for Fleener ... we'll have to see how he grades out ... he could move up or down in scouts views between now and draft day

Definitely. I completely agree. If he proves worthy of the #33 pick, then I think you have to take a hard look at him.

I don't know anything about Irving, but Wake didn't become Wake until he got cut and was working as a personal trainer for a while. IMO that failure was necessary to create the motivation that drives him now.

He was a high school drop out who spent time in juvie, so he couldn't play high school ball. Then got his GED. Couldn't make the team at Butler Community College. Finally landed at San Antonio Junior College in 09 and made 1st team All American. 2010 went to WVU and had 14 sacks. He has little experience, but IMO he has a knack for the game. From what I see, his motor is non stop; he comes play after play, has a great mentality, plays with fire & passion, and to me he seems to truly appreciate the opportunity he's been given with football and doesn't want to waste it. He actually reminds me more of Von Miller.

I've not seen him this year but Josh Chichester of Louisville stood out BIG TIME for me a season ago. This is a cat who's 6'8, with long arms, is a good route runner and who presents serious match up issues down the field.

He was pretty awesome the few times I saw him for ULL last year. He started off extremely poorly this year (only checked box scores since he interested me from last year). I haven't seen a single game this year though, so I don't know how he's playing, but looking now at his season #, while they appear to be down he's still tied for the team lead in TD receptions.

You know I finally got my hands on some UCLA tape and of course I'm really liking what I'm seeing from Joseph Fauria, but I'm also liking what I see out of the starting TE Cory Harkey.

Cory Harkey isn't going to blow anyone away as a pass catcher but he looks BIG on tape. He's listed at 6'4" and 270 lbs and I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually understated rather than overstated. He's got a great build, nice and wide but athletic with big shoulders. He moves well. What I'm thinking when I see him is I'd like to see him play some offensive line. He's clearly their blocking specialist and he really gets after it in that role.

His hands are horrible. He guaranteed 2 drops a game. Had hopes for him couple years ago but again he has no hands.
Interesting thought of him as a OL never pictured that

Yeah, there's no question for me that Cory Harkey isn't going to make it catching passes as a Tight End. You're right, he drops the ball a lot, but it's because he's not fast at all and doesn't create separation, so he's often being hit right when the pass comes in at him...and he just doesn't have the strong hands to make those catches unlike a George Bryan who is a similar Tight End to Harkey.

But he seems pretty technically sound on his blocking, fairly strong player, and he's pretty agile even though he's not fast. That makes me wonder about having him gain some weight and strength and seeing what you could have at a Guard position or something like that.

Getting back to Joe Fauria, I think UCLA's misuse/underuse of him is borderline criminal. They're too caught up in their ideas of who they are and what they do. Much as I like Harkey as a potential convert to the OL, the fact that he's still starting over Joe Fauria is pure nonsense. They've got Harkey out there in 1-TE formations running passing routes, even splitting him wide. It's ridiculous. Whatever coach decided that deserves the dunce cap.

It never fails, in every single game I've watched of them this year, which is now on 4 games. If they get Joe Fauria involved in a drive, good things happen. Never fails. He draws pass interference because he's so tough to cover over the middle and down the seam. In zone, he'll draw the eyes of two or even three defensive players. He can hold the safety which gives you wide open throws to the perimeter. They scored one TD against Houston that way. And then there are instances where you get him in the seam against a linebacker, and forget about it. Just throw it up, the ball is his, easy.

And what I'm really starting to appreciate now that I've watched that many games of him, is what a good blocker he is. That 6'7" and 260 lbs frame is brutal. That's tough for defensive players to handle when he's blocking you. He gets that wide base with those long legs and uses his size and strength against you, and I see a LOT of defensive players ending up on the ground because of it. He can be alarmingly physical at times and block you into tomorrow. He gets movement, which you can't always say about guys that just sort of seal defensive players and don't move them much. Even when he's out in space and not able to get his hands on someone to block, he's such a big road block with that big frame and wing span, defensive players are stuck trying to figure out a way around him and as a result they don't make the play on the ball. But they keep lining him up at H-Back and having him cross the formation behind the line after the snap, and that's not his strength as a blocker. You need a shorter guy if that's what you plan to do with him.

It's hard to say how good of a pro he will be, because he's not being used right at UCLA. He's not being tested and so you don't have quite as many moments like in the Stanford game where they get the ball to him in the seam and the safety timed a vicious hit just right so that he'd arrive right as the ball did, to where Fauria didn't have much chance of coming down with that ball. He needs more reps like that, so that we can see how physically domineering he can be in those situations, catching the ball in traffic with people hitting him. But UCLA is too inept to give scouts the chance to see much of that and so they'll have to hope, and then see how he does in the pros. But I would be willing to bet he does well with it.

But upon watching 4 games of his I do agree with DJ on one thing. He's a little duck footed when he's running. There are some routes where I'm just not going to expect much from him, like little short out routes and whatnot. He's a big time seam stretcher though.

Here's some more of my favorite Joseph Fauria action. The question is, is Joseph Fauria "slow".

Could a slow guy beat the 6'1" and 200 lbs Jawanza Starlinig, who has run in the low 4.5's in campus testing? Look at how Fauria beats Starling on the route and is running fast enough to maintain the separation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SQ7Bjn4tbuw#t=138s

Does he look slow running over the middle here and creating a big play?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Ee_PWzKzj1Q#t=166s

Is he running slow here, as he beats 5'11" and 190 lbs DB William Parks in a straight up foot race down the sidelines on a wheel route for a 28 yard touchdown?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=K_eed6lKEF4#t=101s

Or what about when he beats the 5'10" and 208 lbs safety Tra'mayne Bondurant for a big gain here?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=K_eed6lKEF4#t=195s

It doesn't look like the 6'0" and 190 lbs defensive back Deveron Carr is having an easy time closing lost ground against Fauria on this touchdown...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-2hd7ppGzuA#t=116s

Is Anthony Fasano or any of our current TEs going to be able to come down with rebounds in the end zone like this, consistently?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4WocpNZucAo#t=62s

Is Anthony Fasano about to do this, any time soon?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=a4xazpvM4TQ#t=51s

Or this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=t8xyJRjIPTk#t=117s

Can Anthony Fasano go sky high for the ball up the seam like Joseph Fauria does here?

How intimidating does it have to be for a safety seeing a guy like this going over the middle and knowing you've got to hit him hard and try and separate him from the ball? Look at this play. Fauria goes into the space between linebacker and safety coverage and the safety has to crash down and hit him as hard as he can to make sure Joe doesn't come up with the ball (he didn't). What happens though? Fauria's fine. But look at the safety on the ground stiff like a corpse. He's NOT fine. And if he even returns to the game, he'll think twice about laying into that guy over the middle again.

When you can put moves like this on a guy so much smaller than you like 6'0" and 215 lbs Cyrus Coen, does it really matter if whether you run a 4.81 or 4.74 on a track in under armor?

Here's another reminder or what that pure size and those basketball skills can do for you in the end zone that Anthony Fasano isn't bringing to the table. It just looks unfair.

Or this, try defending a 6'7" guy that can leap and high point a ball like this...

I mean, seriously...try defending this kind of guy in the end zone. Stanford CB Alex Carter sure couldn't.

Here are two more token touchdowns against Colorado. Notice on one, safety Ray Polk who has run a 4.48 in campus testing just can't close the distance and make contact before Fauria can run into the end zone. Notice on the other that 5'9" and 190 lbs Terrell Smith can't close up the separation that Fauria creates even with Fauria looking up for the ball (which slows you down, generally). I don't know how fast Smith is but I know later in the game he tracked Johnathan Franklin down from behind.

Here are two touchdowns by Fauria against Nebraska, one of which I've already linked.

Glad you bumped this Chris. It was a good post then and it is now. He's a good player.

We're sure gonna miss him at UCLA but i know he'll catch on in the pros. Wouldnt be mad at all if we dropped a 2nd rounder on him. We need playmakers and if we cant get a decent wr then a TE will be almlst as good. Actually, how about both?

I had collected a bunch of time stamps from YouTube videos for plays of his that I liked and I didn't really want to just let those get lost, wanted to put them somewhere for reference. It's not so much that I wanted to bump one of my old threads as I just saw no point starting another thread about Fauria when I knew one already existed because I created it.

I like him too. I don't even care if he is "supposedly" not fast. How many "fast" people are gonna cover a 6'7 monster at full speed.

Same reason why i liked Toilolo. Just mismatch nightmares!

Makes sense but it deserved a bump anyways.

I looked on cbssports.com and they have him rated as a 6-7th rounder. Is he going to fall in the draft, and why would they have him so low?

I noticed that, too. That's a really weird projection.
