You do recall when he was drafted, right? You don't need to make excuses for him. He stunk.

    Doesn't excuse what he did.

He was a fringe player on the 2007 Giants. Yes, Manatee Wright has a Super Bowl ring.

Now he's playing in the Arena League.

Yes, but what does his career with the Lions have to do with the Dolphins?

Tom Olivadotti- Jim Kelly's favorite defensive coordinator- "We kept waiting for him to make adjustments"
Eddie "Earthquake" Blake- There's actually a lot of ammunition to choose from during Shula's last decade (Billy Milner, Eric Kumerow, Aubrey Beavers, etc.). This 2nd round pick was genuinely awful no matter what side of the ball they tried to play him.
Dave Wannstadt- Not Dave Wannstadt the coach, who I think gets too much of a bad rap, but Dave Wannstadt the personnel guy, who you really can't sell short (Jamar Fletcher as a 1st round nickle CB, AJ Feeley, Lamar Gordon, Eddie Moore as a 2nd round special teams player, "What can Trent Green do that Jay Fiedler can't?").
John Avery- The Dolphins, desperate for a RB (see runners-up Cecil Collins, Lawrence Phillips, JJ Johnson), waste a 1st round pick on a kid who was more notorious for wanting to play video games rather than study the playbook. Compounding the bust was a) the pick could have been used on Randy Moss had they not decided to trade down before the draft; and subsequently b) the Dolphins 4th round selection of the immortal Larry Shannon, described by Jimmy Johnson as being "as big and fast as Randy Moss". Just nowhere near as talented.

Given that you're the one who tried to set the bar low on expectations from Harrington, this is more appropriate a question for yourself. Why do you feel it's acceptable to expect a starting quarterback to underperform? I don't like it when players decide they only want to play certain plays or certain games.

Are you really going to say that there's nothing shameful about Joey Harrington's time here? Okay then.

    Leadership:

Dave Wannstedt: Did more damage single handedly than any other figures combined.

Tom Olivadotti: If Marino could go back in time the first thing he'd do prior to his first training camp would be to have Olivadotti hit and dumped in the everglades.

Chuck Studley: Another disaster of a D Coordinator.

Don Shula as a GM: If Don the coach had a good GM to work with Marino never would have left the league ringless. That is my belief. Don was an awful GM.
HOF coach is inarguable.... but as a GM... he couldn't draft well to save his life or Marino's career.

    Players.. so many...

I remember Rick Norton, he was a 1st round pick who was tagged as the second coming of Joe Namath. Was the biggest 1st round quarterback bust the Dolphins ever had. He signed a $400,000 contract which was a huge contract at the time.
    My choices;
    Rick Norton
    Eddie Moore
    Jamar Fletcher
    John Avery

Coachingwise - Wannstedt would have made it on my list. So too Studley and Olivadotti. They were the worst. But, Wanny is at the top because he started the deep plunge to below mediocrity. However, since they have been named - here are my four:

Sammy Smith (RB) - fumbled away multiple games.

William Judson (CB) - one of the few humans on the planet who could almost single-handedly cause Dan Marino to lose a game after Marino put up 45 points.

Eric Kumerow (DE/OLB) - horrible 1st round pick - largely b/c of the need at DT and Michael Dean Perry was on the board.

Billy Milner (OT) - Another horrible 1st round pick.

Joe Toledo...6 years and 6 teams and never played in a regular season game
the biggest turd/thief ever...made of glass

Eric Kumerow drafted in the first round in 1988 played 3 years and NEVER started a game
He is the grandson of Chicago Outfit mob boss Anthony Accardo.

Jackie Shipp drafted in the first round in 1984
played 6 years and 74 games in his so called career
He was a turnover machine with 1 sack and 1 interception in 6 years

John Bosa first round pick in 1987...Shula had 2 terrible 1st round picks back to back
with Bosa and Kumerow...Bosa lasted 3 seasons and nobody noticed he was gone

I don't know anything about Tom Olivadotti. He was slightly before my time (started getting into football/Dolphins in '93), but looks like he was Defensive Coordinator for 9 years. That's a long time. How bad was he?

What's helping Wanny is the ineptitude since he left. 11-5 don't look so bad now.

Dave Wannstedt shouldn't simply because he was the last coach who had a team win a playoff game. Sad, but true. Until the Dolphins win another playoff game, he should be in no hall of shame just as a reminder to how awful we've been since then.

Even though a better coach should've taken those teams further, especially in 2002 and 2003...but compared to what we've been through since? those were sadly the good ol' days...Going 9-7 or 10-6 seems like a pipe dream at this point.

For some reason, Shula was loyal to him. It probably cost the Dolphins a Super Bowl trip or two in the 90's. In his last year, the Dolphins lost to the Bills in a game where they gave up over 200 yards rushing. A couple weeks later the two met in the playoffs. Adjust your gameplan to stop the run, right? Well, the Bills ran for 341 that day.

He should be banned from ever attending another Dolphins game.

But he wasn't responsible for 11-5, JJ was. Well, not true, with a better coach we'd have been 13-3.

Either way, this is more proof people looking at the W/L record when judging a GM is clearly not a accurate. As a coach he was no better than Sparano. In fact, they probably share the same brain.

Wait Cameron Worrell is on this list but no Reggie Howard.
Worrell was brought here to play special teams. Not really his fault.
You look up toast in the dictionary and there is a picture of Howard. He was dreadful.

Dave Wannstedt - Took a deep, young cheap team with a championship caliber defense and special teams and let it get old, expensive and thin. His drafting was horrible, he gave up too much for Ricky Williams and showed blind faith in a bad quarterback (Jay Fiedler) while other options (Trent Green and Matt Hasselbeck) were there for the taking at a relatively cheap price. He should have never been hired and should have been fired on at least 3 occasions before he mercifully "resigned".

Paul Lankford and William Judson - This is a package deal. For the purpose of the poll you can combine them into one player and call them "The worst starting corner tandem in NFL history". I still have nightmares about watching them trailing opposing receivers by 5 yards.

Tom Olivadotti - For our younger viewers he is best explained this way. Take all the frustration you had for Dan Henning, Kippy Brown and every other horrible coordinator you have witnessed, multiply it by 10, and add in a "he can't be fired" element. In his first 3 years as a coordinator we were ranked 26th, 26th and 24th in yards against. Remember, it was a 28 team league then. He was the defensive coordinator for NINE YEARS, in those nine horrifying years are defense was ranked, in order, 26th, 26th, 24th, 7th, 25th, 10th, 20th, 19th and 16th. We made the playoffs 4 times in those nine years compiling a 3-4 record. Remember, during this nine year period the offense was in the top 8 EIGHT times and the lowest they ever ranked was 11th.

The 2006 Miami Dolphins medical staff - Drew Brees. How different would this franchise be right now?

Don Shula the G.M. for the last decade of his tenure - Go look at the draft record. There is no argument. He should have fired himself.

Let's not forget the prior Buffalo travesties. In 1990, the Dolphins were torched in a playoff game by Jim Kelly when Olividotti kept trying to cover Andre Reed (who often lined up inside) with Safety Louis Oliver. In the 1992 season, in the AFC Championship game, the Bills ran screen play after screen play with great success. In an interview years later Jim Kelly confided that Olividotti was practically a joke amongst the Bills, due in great part to their disbelief that Olividotti would often stubbornly refuse to make adjustments.

How on earth can any of you vote Cam Cameron over Dave Wannstedt?????????????????

    Beyond belief.
Cameron was here for 1 year..... 1 year..... He had no long lasting effects on the organization at all.
Wanny is the one that put the team Saban and Cameron had to take over into the sh!tter to begin with.

There is no one on that list that comes close to the destruction Wanny did to this franchise.
He should be the top vote getter bottom line.

    End rant....

    Don't disagree with Johnson.
It was his influence that made Wayne think he was a good hire.

Still it does not diminish the fact that once Wanny got in he did more damage to this franchise than any one coach ever did.
    It's not even close.

I consider the wasting of 1st and 2nd round picks to carry a lot more weight than late round picks, mid tier or fringe free agents that bust. Therefore:
    Avery
    Fletcher
    Eddie Moore.
Have to save room for the worst head coach in team history. CamCam.

His defenses were usually undermanned from a talent standpoint. His 1990 defense was one of the best during the regular season. Only allowed 242 points, 3rd fewest in the league. But Offerdahl got hurt and missed some of the playoffs and the defense was like the difference between night and day when he was out. We beat the Chiefs 17-16 with Offerdahl playing, and then he missed the Buffalo game and we got beat like 44-34. Had Offerdahl stayed healthy, I really believe that team was Marino's best shot at another Super Bowl.
