Interesting if true... Looks like Long is a goner.

yeah, earliest smoke screen I've seen yet...

Fanbase would be pretty pissed without getting anything for Long.

PFT is reaching for content on a slow day.

There's an outside chance Smith is franchised, but not because PFT tries to pass off Volin's opinion as fact for purposes of maintaing traffic levels on a Saturday.

I don't think so. Most realize that he's not worth big money and that as a FA the team is unlikely to get anything for him.

I have been the biggest Long supporter over the years, but I would not want to bring him back with a tag, that's a lot of money. And you know he is not going to take a Miami discount like say Paul Solia did, because some other team is gonna' throw CASH at him to play for them, which IMO wouldn't be worth it.

It kinda hurt but I've already accepted the loss of big Jake after this season.

So why not tag and trade for something?..I've seen down years from linemen, but I've never seen someone like Jake just flat fall the **** out.

Not a chance Smith will be franchised. He's still a 2nd corner at best.

I find it difficult to believe that we can franchise Soliai and not Jake, he represents too much value...

Jeff's pretty damn good at creative financing.

Plus, my Long for Jarius Byrd straight up trade is still on the table:shifty:

What a waste that would be.

Are they not even going to try and trade Long? There isn't any reason we couldn't get anything for Long. Look at the Line struggles of Dallas, Bears, Giants, Cards.

Who would trade for a LT they know we can't/won't franchise and has to be released?

Yeah, but it's just money, which we have...We can always put him on the right side if nobody bites. Letting him walk just seems too Orlando Magic/farm team-ish a mistake.

If he bounces back, then smart move...If he doesn't, then we eat a ton of worthless cap space that will be freed up the following season.

Still gotta think he's trade-able before the draft.

Just money to the guy who isn't paying it. Justify $15.2 million to your owner when the new guy is doing just as good a job.

The money isn't limitless. If you franchise him and can't trade him (very possible b/c who knows when he'll pass a physical) then you can kiss goodbye to any thought of landing one of the FA WRs. Paying him that much and sticking him on the right side would be one of the poorest ideas ever and one that should get any GM fired.

If they don't keep Smith then they'll surely look for someone else at CB. All those guys are decent players but you need someone better

We will get something in 2014. If he signs elsewhere, it is a near certainty we'll get a 3rd round compensatory pick in the following season. The only way I can imagine we'd not get a comp pick would be if we go out and sign a bunch of expensive UFAs and do not lose at least the same number or more.

Still have time to make that determination. I don't know the severity of the triceps tear, or the suggested timeline. I see what you're saying, of course, and would agree if that's the case. It's just that letting him walk with no compensation seems worse. I'd let Incognito walk, or Reggie, or Starks to hedge my bet a little. Irregardless, we have plenty of cap space to land a FA WR as well.

Also, there is no reason for the fan base to be pissed off, if we make good use of the cap space at other need positions, and also consider the OL has not really dropped much in performance in his absence. Garner has garnered high ratings from PFF ever since he's been starting. Richie I has done better since Martin moved over to LT, and the last two games were Martin's best back to back games of the season.

I wouldn't cut Richie. He is under contract for 2013 and his cap hit is only 500k higher than 2012. IMO, we have enough holes to fill without creating more.

Can someone who is knowledgeable of the different tags, not just the Franchise tag create a post explaining what they mean? I admit I am not familiar with them but I would like to know more about them and how they work.

People get annoyed when four years later not a single member of a draft class remains on a teams roster... And it's not because the roster has been upgraded with even more talented players.

I think a team could try to trade for Long. That way they know they are getting him and they won't have to outbid another team for him.

I know right, just set it up beforehand behind closed doors and make it happen. Another second rounder could go a long way in this draft.

Smith is still ascending as a player and is the best coverage guy on defense that's #1 in the redzone, 6th in scoring, and 5th in pass TDs allowed. Not sure why people are treating him as though he's the worst player on a bad defense.

This defense has developed chemistry and plays well together. Absolutely zero reason to break 'em up or ditch the team's best corner. Ask Larry Fitz & AJ Green what he's capable of. I'd certainly franchise him to prevent losing him, especially over Long.

I hope we are not forced to franchise anyone. Smith is a solid player but not a top 10 CB IMHO. He does not play the ball in the air well enough. Remember his first pre-season game with the one handed pick! I though we were getting a freak ball hawk LOL! He should get top CB 25% money and Hartline deserves a salary that pays Jordy Nelson money ( three-year, $13.35 million) plus interest, IDK three years 16 million w/ incentives. Go get Greg Jennings :)

Sorry, dude; but no. Nowhere near as bad as drafting Pat White. The only thing that's in the same league as drafting Pat White is drafting Ted Ginn Jr.

  39. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

Other than the difference in the pick used on them, a high 1st rather than a mid 2nd, as far as how good a player they are, Ginn is all world compared to White. Trouble is, taking Ginn cost us Patrick Willis, and taking White only cost us someone like Conner Barwin.

I'd be pretty unhappy if they franchised Smith. He's an adequate starting corner, but that is an exorbitant price for a guy who can't have a full good season.
