### http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/#storylink=cpy It sounds like a plan for rebuilding IMO.What better way to give a new regime the impulse it needs to implement its strategy .Cap space to sign a top free agent plus a load of draft picks. BTW The Jets are in Cap hell .What a crying shame
This will be Ireland's defining year. It will make or break his career. So far he has us looking pretty good.
I agree with that. This will be Irelands make or break draft and his future is resting on a solid draft and good free agent pickups.
Up 'til now I've been on the fence re Ireland, but this offseason has for the last year or two always been in my mind as the one that will make him or break him. Bit worried that it's our most important offseason for a while that will be that benchmark, but lets see how it pans out before stoning him to death or not. Oh, and the Jets... The gift that keeps on giving.
IMO Ireland's career rests on Ryan Tannehill, period, because if Tannehill doesn't pan out, the team won't win enough to save Ireland's job.
I trust him, with the draft picks but not the cap space. This years draft has been good with the exception of Egnew and I think a big part is Philbin. We did not have a good free agency class this year as far as signing new players. I am judging Ireland more on the free agency because I feel he is on his own there.
This year's FAs didn't pan out because we were bargain shopping. It's not like we spent tons of money on FAs that were busts.
The itchy fire'n fingers I don't understand. And replace everyone with who, exactly? It is just this kind of inconsistency that has plagued us ever since Shula left. Consistently inconsistent. Btw LOL at the Jets
I believe the deal is, he blows his allotted wad, and if nobody steps up, he jumps to his doom, to appease the volcano. He's enjoyed carte blanche c/o the billionaire owner. Spent or not, come September, expect this place to be rumbling like Krakatoa.
Personally I think Ireland is a mediocre GM .We could do better but he has done a good job of making Ross happy by accumulating draft picks and saving cap space .And Ross s opinion is the only one that matters. This is pure speculation .But could it be that all of these moves are designed to make the team attractive for a possible buyer .It could be he has an interested buyer who has pre existing demands before a possible sale and a manageable cap could be one of those demands. That could be a possible explanation why our high profile players have not been re signed.
I dont think he has had the team long enough to even start to think about selling it, unless he is in big finacial trouble, and if that were the case we would already be hearing rumors.
This is from a couple of months ago: "Jordan Zimmerman, founder and chairman of Zimmerman Advertising, is reportedly interested in buying the Miami Dolphins from real estate developer Stephen Ross. So far, Zimmerman has been turned down, according to an item by Miami Herald sports writer Barry Jackson. A spokeswoman for Zimmerman said she had just checked with him and he had no comment on the buyout report. (I also have a call in to the Dolphins to see if they'll comment.)" Link: HERE
Well I'd think we'd know really quickly because the sale of the franchise, with the team on the cusp of it's defining offseason, would likely include a change in GM's IMHO... A new owner is likely to want to 'do his own thing'....things will be moving quickly in the NFL world come next week if the plan is to dump Irish. There are only a few qualified GM's that would be available. It's not impossible to happen, but like someone said above, it's something that we'd likely have heard some rumblings about, save for the Zimmerman blurb from a few months ago... On the other hand, I find it hard to fathom that they 'planned' this offseason to turn out like this, although could be the reason Ross held on to Sparano as long as he did ?? Irish has what every GM dreams about in this offseason...a guy that looks like a franchise at QB, money to spend and picks galore. Could he be setting things up for a strong football president, Peterson ?? Someone who has the experience to run the organization ?? The things that Peterson has been working on in the stadiums has taken off, he's a proponent of Ireland, he's Ross's good friend as well as business partner, knows the business end of football. It seems less likely as I put in print than it did in my weaselly little mind when I thought of it, but it's a possibility ?? Either way, assuming things stay status quo with Ireland, this IS his defining season as a GM. He'll either join the big boys and become the guy that Parcells thought he was or he'll end up looking for work with a big ? on his abilities...but it may not be 2014 as some seem to think. Given Ross's MO, I think he'll get more than just this one offseason to demonstrate his ability/inability simply because of the nature of the GM business...
Its a good point but smart businessmen know the value of secret transactions. It could be just a handshake arrangement between Ross and a potential buyer .No one else needs to know.
He meant blow the stadium up... the stadium is the POS. I'm actually happy its Ireland behind the wheel in this situation... I have confidence in him. He's got the team heading in the right direction, no doubt. This offseason can make him more than it could break him. He has more than enough resources to do what he needs to, and this is why he should be giddy. He pretty much set himself up to look bad this year, only to make him look like a genius next year. He almost cant lose, and it's going to come down to the Coaching staff and Tannehill to complete the turn-around. There is most definitely a feather in his cap......
We have a bunch of guys who contribute. A good analogy I think would be a stew. We have the meat and potatoes but no spice. Spice being playmakers. We'll see if Jeff likes his stew Caribbean style or British style. All offense to British "cuisine" intended. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
Anyone expecting Ireland to make an impact in free agency with the cap space is setting themselves up for a huge letdown. As are those expecting many impact players in an Ireland led draft. Not sure how many mediocre to terrible offseasons this guy can engineer before this fanbase stops believing in him.
IMO 2013 is year 2 of a reboot in terms of how the team is built. The FAs haven't been resigned because none of them are sure fire keepers , the FA market will be fairly well stacked and we have a lot of early picks. I think it's prudent to take a wait and see approach. Obviously this is an important offseason but 3 years is generally the time frame used to judge a rebuild so while its important to make some significant improvement I think 2014 is the year that we should expect to be in contention.
To the eternally letdown : How many offseasons have been mediocre to terrible in your eyes ? All I'm sure. Who were your picks at those spots ? Someone better, ofcourse ! Who's the guy who should be running things ? ...................................................................................... What is your definition of impact players ? and how many impact players do you expect a team to have ? I've seen Ireland make a lot of good moves to bring the best players we have here. The two that many are upset he traded away........ he brought here in the 1st place. New staff, new QB, new era. Get with it, baby. We're rebuilding to be stocked when Tannehill hits his prime. So easy to be swayed by the media these days. Fight back and think for yourselves ! Anyone hoping the team will crash and burn and gets the GM fired is one big Letdown. Having no faith gets you nothing in the end. But you still get to enjoy it when/if Miami returns to the playoffs next year. I'll be here.
Well, we are 7-8 with a Rook Qb and one good Wr and 6 p bowl alternates. Ireland has done a fairly good job, his problem is he cannot find playmakers, the only guy he found the past offseason who makes any plays is Thigpen. A Rook Qb buys him another yr imo, said it at the time of the draft.
lol yea, its the media that has convinced us Ireland is bad, not the poorly built roster, lack of playmakers, several whiffs early in the draft and the soon to be 4 straight losing seasons which is the worst 4 year stretch in franchise history.
Ireland needs to do a better job in FA… Bess being the only good receiver says a lot about his inability to get playmakers
I really shouldn't ask, but I'm really curious what the logic is that Bess is a good receiver but Hartline is not.
Starks is the only sure keeper IMO… problem with not keeping Smith is that puts the Fins in a situation to replace two CB positions,
I was a Hartline hater, but have changed my tune. Granted he is no lone #1, he had a very nice season and played tough. It makes me wonder what could have been of we went after a Wayne or a Garçon... Theres a lot of talent out there. You need multiple targets and threats in the receiving game to take it to another level. Gotta cut the cords on the Marlon moores and Wallace's. One or two developmental guy tops. We need to go into next season with h-line, Bess, and another proven pro at WR.
It's almost like a movie not making sense for 1 1/2 hours. Then unfolding at the end and you're like "ohhhh ok" Hopefully it's an ending we all give a standing ovation to.
