I've said this before, but it wasn't the trade that bother so much. It was the lack of insight or preparation or whatever to replace the undeniable production we were trading away.
The fact that Teflon Jeff thought it could be replaced by Naanee and Johnson and a bunch or young guys who had shown little to suggest they would step up is an indictment.

No to the lifting weights all his life
One of the huge red flags with Martin before the draft was his strength
and NEVER being in the weight room all through college

12 running backs had better combine bench press numbers
4 wide receivers had better numbers(Ruichaed Wallace put up
the same number(20) as Martin did
6 tight ends had better lift numbers
17 offensive tackles had better bench numbers
20 offensive guards had better bench numbers
    6 centers had better #s
22 defensive tackles had better #s
20 defensive ends had better #s
6 inside linebackers had better #s
17 outside linebackers had better #s
2 corner backs had better #s
    4 safeties had better #s

136 players put up better bench press numbers than Martin had at the combine

There should be no surprise when he gets man handled and to think
1 off season is going to correct this problem is beyond absurd

Irish better get his head out of his *** and fix the damn O-line!!! This idiot & Morano have screwed this offense with pathetic o-line play. If I'm Ross I go straight to Irish & Phibin and tell them to get this shiot straightened out during the off season. There are no Rbs & qbs in this league that can play at a high level without adequate blocking up front.

Resign Long if it's for a reasonable contract. Otherwise they need to figure out if Martin is really going to play on this o-line. His play has been mostly pathetic and mediocre on occasion. Does he play Rt or maybe G? Who knows? Also Jerry needs to be upgraded or tried out at right tackle. I say we use our cap $$ on a play maker wr or te on offense.

We need to use our early picks on the o-line. I know it's not popular but god's sake this team need to give Tannehill some time to friggin throw the ball. This kid is not Marino with a lightening quick release!!

In other words, we're counting on Martin, who didn't do serious strength training at Stanford because he probably felt he didn't need it, to change his whole attitude toward building strength and become an overpowering bruiser over one offseason.

    Good luck.

He may have spent less time in the weight room because Stanford actually has academic standards for their athletes.

It would of been smart to make a better decision about his prof craft, isn't that why kids go to school, identify their craft so they can get good at it, and make millions of dollars..

yeah forgetting that this is the NFL and not the NBA, sign and trades basically don't happen, Jason Smith for Wayne Hunter was actually done this season but its rather rare

i think some of you are overreacting because martin had a bad game to finish the season, he was solid after taking over for Jake Long and an offseason in the weight room might do wonders for him

People who are pissing on Ireland over the state of the offensive line over the years he's been here are barking up the wrong tree.

He has "solved" basically every offensive line position, some multiple times. Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Jake Grove and Vernon Carey(and now Mike Pouncey) all had played quite well in Miami, and were signed to multi-year contracts at an age in which they could be expected to continue to play that way through the length of their contract. All of those players are undeniable scouting wins.

At a certain point, the Dolphins have had bad ****ing luck with keeping high quality offensive linemen playing well. To an extent, the front office should deserve a degree of blame for Justin Smiley and Jake Grove. We knew that they were injury prone before they were signed. However, both of them suffered what happened to be career ending injuries. Expecting an injury prone player to have difficulty playing 16 games is reasonable, but not suffering what would

Jake Long and Vernon Carey played at elite levels for multiple years after they were acquired, and then both declined. In both cases, there was nothing that the front office should have known about either case previous to their signing that would have suggested it is the case.

Jake Long was the #1 overall pick
Vernon Carey was on the team before Jeff Ireland arrived.

These aren't considered scouting wins in my book.

And Mike Pouncey, as much as I love that he's an elite player at his position, was the highest drafted Center ever. So yes, I'll call that a win. But not a grand slam....(Cam Wake is a grand slam)

Ireland has yet to find a guy, outside of the first round, play at a consistent above average level on the OL

This ignores the fundamental reality of the draft, the success rate of #1 overall picks, that there was no consensus pick that year, and any number of other things.

And you've still got to scout and make decisions based on him.

    No, he wasn't.

And my fundamental point is that it is difficult to blame him for the "consistent" aspect.

Out of the top three picks in 2008, Jake Long may be the least valuable.

Making a decision on Carey after he was the Dolphins best OL in 2007 and you have 3 years of NFL game tape on him is hardly a difficult task for an NFL GM. It was no scouting milestone. Let's be honest with ourselves here.

Pouncey wasn't the highest drafted center ever? Maybe I'm mistaken then. Still very high and shouldn't be considered this huge win for Ireland. A win, nonetheless, I agree.

And I don't see why he's not at fault for our poor Guard play. Smiley and Grove were gone 2 years ago, and Incognito has been average to below average his entire career. John Jerry is sub par and thats on him also. We'll have to agree to disagree
