Heh, we can speculate on that, but keep in mind Reality is Wilford and Naanee.

So obviously they're the same player then.

So you're saying Tom Brady will miraculously give Hartline upgraded physical abilities he's never had?
Even dating back to college Hartline wasn't a scorer. 13 TDs in 3 years. Welker reached the endzone 31 times.

Could be, NE could see it that way and for a younger, but proven player, who works cheaper and harms a division rival.

Yet still not much in common w Welker aside from being white and somewhat quick.

I don't think Jennings is going to get $10 million a year. I would be surprised if that happened.

Hartline at $6 million a year wouldn't shock me but I also wouldn't pay him more than $4-5 million.

A 30 year old Anquan Boldin signed a 4yr/$28M deal with Baltimore after back to back 84+ catch, 1000+ yard seasons.
IMO a 30 year old Jennings will get that plus a smidge more for inflation, hence the 4yr/$30M I previously mentioned.

NE doesn't pay for WR's so no worries about them getting Hartline and making him the next Welker. Remember NE threw us that extra 6th so they could pay Welker a LOT less in the end.

Honestly I'm glad if we got average players asking for the world that it's at positions where we have other options in the Draft/FA. WR and CB are semi solid this year in FA.

Me too. I remember drafting him really late in FF that year and saying how he could catch 100 in NE. I got roasted by a league full of Bills fans

That sounds about right to me. I'd been considering $8 million a year as the number.

And if Brian Hartline is $7 million, that right there dictates exactly what the Dolphins should do.

I'd still draft a guy in those first 5 picks also. I really want to see prime skill positions picked with those first 5. DE/WR/TE/DB etc

I'm thinking the final negotiation numbers are something like $7M offered by us and $8M requested by Jennings to where we meet at $7.5, but I certainly wouldn't kill the deal over an extra $0.5M.

    yup

Anquan Boldin was not a FA. Balt traded a third and fourth for him, while he was under contract. He got an extension.

But that's still the contract deal he accepted and signed..... and his new contract was signed immediately after the trade was made, meaning the contract talks began before the trade occurred.

But he could only negotiate with one side. Its not an open market. He was at an inherent disadvantage. His only alternative was holding out.

I've long been a proponent of drafting two receivers almost regardless of what the Dolphins do in free agency.

It's still what he signed for. Sean Smith isn't really a free agent, either. And if the report about the franchise tag is correct, he won't be.

Who is Sean Smith allowed to negotiate with right now? Who will he be negotiating with when/if he gets the franchise tag slapped on him?

No one forced Boldin to sign for 4yr/ $28.0M..... and like I said, the deal was signed the day he was traded IIRC, so they had to have come to terms before the trade was finalized it would seem.

How is Sean Smith not a FA? He is not under contract. Anquan Boldin was under contract.

And either way, using Anquan Boldin's contract is not necessarily the best example? Vincent Jackson (5yr/55M), Steve Johnson (5yr/36M), DeSean Jackson (5yr/51M), Pierre Garcon (5yr/42M). You're telling me that Greg Jennings will take Steve Johnson or Marques Colston money?

What does Sean Smith have to do with how much Greg Jennings would sign with a team for?

i believe Hartline has much more to offer than simply being our 'other' outside WR ... problem is, since Ted Ginn - we haven't had anyone else to put out there. we had several discussions on this over the last 4+ years on how Camarillo, Hartline + Bess were all 'similar' type players .... with no true outside threat, and when Brandon came in -- it really only made it worse.

Could he go to the PATS in a Welkeresque role, sure .... would he be AS good, not likely -- but the drop off would not likely be as significant as some would think.

Regardless, i would suspect that we'll pony up the $$$ to bring in one of the top 3 WRs (Wallace, Jennings or Bowe) and then draft someone no later than RD3. $$$ wise, would think that Jennings would be the cheapest of the 3.

Considering he'll be 32 & 33 during his 3rd and 4th year of the contract, yes.

The Hartline to Welker comparison honestly feels a lot like a white to white comparison. The play NOTHING alike.

Pablum, they do play much alike, more quick than fast, not afraid to go over the middle, both under valued in Miami.

Welker only had 21 touchdowns in college. 5 TDs in 2001, 7 in 2002, and 9 in 2003.

Either way, you can't look at raw TD numbers and base anything on it, IMO. The offenses the two teams ran were completely different. During Welker's four years at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders had a total of 151 touchdown passes. Welker's 21 touchdown receptions accounted for about 14% of their touchdown production through the air.

Ohio State, during Brian Hartline's three years, threw a total of 73 touchdown passes. Hartline's 12 touchdown receptions accounted for about 16% of their touchdown production.

Just for comparison, Davone Bess caught 41 touchdown passes during his three years at Hawaii. Hawaii had 150 touchdown passes during that time. His total accounted for about 27% of their total. Based on this data, Bess was much more productive as a touchdown threat than either Welker or Hartline were in college.

a lot of players are more quick than fast and not afraid to go over the middle in today's protective game.

you're forgetting rushing and in the return game, which are a testament to Welker's improved playmaking ability over Hartline, and playmaking ability is an aspect of scoring. It refers to Welker's ability to create on his own at times rather than every TD being simply b/c of Brady.

And had 1k/14.6 ypc heading into Fa and are 26?

By any metric, Hartline has been far more productive than Welker when he was in Miami, including Td's, Welker had..1...a single Td..and he has never scored a rushing Td, Hartlne has etc etc

Keep digging phinsational, you've been wrong so far no need to change now :wink2:

.... and what would his ypc be brought down to if he were a legitimate contributor in the short passing game, screens, etc? How many TDs has he had the past 3 years?

if you say so. Not sure what personal attacks have to do with a Hartline thread.
