No surprise there. Egnew always had the brook trout look.

It would blow my mind more if the quoted player turned out to be Merlin Olsen.

No correlation between 3rdu rd picks who are inactive without injury 90% of the season, who then become solid starters in this league.

32 third rounders every year, go back 10 yrs and find me guys who have become regular starters.
Tgats 332 players. Show me 10 who are the exception.

If you read Russ Lande's analysis of Egnew before the draft he was spot on. Slow off the ball, too upright and stiff, lacks athleticism and toughness.

He has been here 3 and second year player equates to 2 years in the league. If you take any team and question all the players about other players the results/answers/ OPINIONS would not be far different.

This is the same as Me posting

" spoke to several beat writers around the nation. All agree, Mando dates 12 year old boys. One writer thats been around for two years said Mando should have been arrested a long time ago."

Only difference here folks is Mando and the other pinhead S.Florida sports writers actually believe people believe what they are saying. Now that is funny right there.

My point being I don't think you can compare a slump overreaction to an issue that has plagued a player since training camp.

I am going to reserve judgement on Egnew the dude is what 23-24 years old? That blog is a bit but a hatchet job by Armando. Some guys get acclimated slower. If he gets cut out if camp or is inactive next year it's fair to say he is a big miss but it's early.

Armando is an idiot. I'm willing to bet the players he quoted was a player from Egnews high school team.

I just think it sucks we have unnamed players going to Armando talking **** about a teammate. I'd have to beat some *** with the cameras off if that was my teammate. ijs.

my point being that fans are knee jerk and it happens quite often on here. I don't see how you can't compare them. Ones worse then the other. The slump reaction being worse then the training camp issues one.

I think I agree...but don't worry, Ireland will sign Leonard Pope and then draft a TE in the 6th round, so we should be fine there.

True, imo the guys who said that did him a real favor if he wants to play in the NFL.

Every pro athlete has a confidence in their ability and when a teammate says stuff like this it SHOULD cause a real close look at what he has been doing up until now b/c it is not working.

IIRC, didn't Finley start out slowly as well?

Yeah, Finely had something like 6 catches and a TD. Was active for every game (IIRC), if that matters.

EDIT: Active 14 games w/ 1 start. 1 catch for 0 yards in start.

eggnog is really not looking good at this point. we DO NOT hear this kind of thing about players ALL THE TIME as someone posted earlier in here. a team mate calling another player a PU### is not something that gets into the mainstream media very often,, especially not a rookie.. what a drag if this kid really does not make it through camp next season,,, sucks.

Good research, so there is some precedence for a guy developing.

I'd love to hear from Aaron Rodgers12 if the same things were said about Finley that offseason to motivate him?

Guys, this is Armando we're speaking about here.

This man could write an article saying that Florida is a peninsula, and I'd still be skeptical.

Fantasy writers > Miami beat writers

Eff these awful writers...Dave Hyde is the anchorman of Miami.

This board and it's members offer far more insight than all the Miami beat writers put together.

"...It is only by hazard that a writer makes money although good books always make money eventually. Then our writers when they have made some money increase their standard of living and they are caught. They have to write to keep up their establishments, their wives, and so on, and they write slop. It is slop not on purpose but because it is hurried. Because they write when there is nothing to say or no water in the well. Because they are ambitious. Then, once they have betrayed themselves, they justify it and you get more slop. Or else they read the critics..." - Hemingway "Green Hills of Africa"

Eh, keep in mind, this is the same 'Mando (along with OMark) who had serious doubts about Cam Wake making the team in 09.

Can recall them going on and on about Wake covering kicks in the bubble and what a bad sign it was..

Walterfootball.com's take on Egnew prior to the draft:

"Egnew doesn't look like he has the speed to be a receiving tight end in the NFL. He struggles to get separation from defenders who run well. After making catches, Egnew doesn't have the quickness to get up field, so defenders surround him quickly. He can contribute as a blocker though.

Egnew could be a decent backup to a good tight end in the NFL. If he is paired with a dangerous tight end, he could take advantage of some soft coverage and help move the chains. He should only be a second or third tight end at the next level. He doesn't have the plus skill set with speed and athletic ability to be a starter."

Despite all the talk, still feel like we have to give this guy a shot, and offseason of weightlifting, and see where he is. This isn't the first guy to leave college for pro's and not have the build/mentality you need. Hopefully he reads these comments and gets fired up.

After reading this thread, I read old predraft scouting reports ad nauseam, and the knock on the kid seems to be that he was used as an oversized wide receiver, which is what he played in high school, and was never asked to block defensive ends or linebackers. That kind of thing isn't taught in one training camp or even one season at the NFL level. The kid needs to add muscle, technique and attitude. Whether he can within a reasonable time will determine whether he should continue to take up a roster spot, or whether a more finished product with similar ball skills is available.

Maybe if the right side of our offensive line could block somebody, this kid would see some time on the field.
