You're confusing personal opinion with the reporting of others' opinion.

That is what is so hurtful, because Ireland so far has turned two # 2's into so far, if he is cut, 2 years of (average) Marshall and a # 3 pick in this year's draft. That is horrible, and the signs that what's of more concern is the GM than just about anything else on this team.

And no matter how good of a coach Philbin is he cannot overcome his GM if he doesn't give him the talent his offense needs to succeed.

Unless said player KNOWS Philbin feels this way too. Philbin may already want him gone, and Ireland has blocked his being cut, to save his own *** from questions from Ross.

Except this isn't Armando's opinion, it's supposedly one from a player.

I don't mind a TE that was used as a WR. IMO UF did that with Hernandez, but when I watched Egnew, I didn't see him be dynamic enough as a WR. What makes those seam TEs matchup nightmares is that they're great athletes, too big and fast for safeties and CBs and too fast for LBs. Egnew simply wasn't athletic enough. I believe that Ireland is a good scout, but I don't know what he saw in Egnew. The reports right after the draft were that Philbin pushed for the pick so maybe that was one of those picks Ireland had to give to Philbin in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation?

I just don't accept the idea that a 6-5, 250+ lb guy who runs a 4.6, has a 37.5 inch vertical jump and an 11 foot broad jump isn't athletic enough. That's more athletic than Hernandez or 90% of the other receiving TEs in the NFL who are considered dynamic. That said, I agree that he never looked that athletic or dynamic in college.

I don't know if Philbin did or didn't push for him. Egnew certainly seemed like a pick made in an attempt to provide Philbin/Sherman with the type of TE they wanted. I wonder if there was some miscommunication there where Ireland envisioned the role being for essentially an oversized WR who would rarely be asked to do traditional TE-type blocking but really was (or ended up being) much closer to a traditional TE role, which was something Egnew had virtually no experience.

There's a difference between track athleticism and football athleticism. People make the mistake of thinking that speed always translates and that weight equals strength. It doesn't always. You have to watch them play. When I watched him play, he simply didn't make the athletic plays. It might be what some of the players in the report talked about as "toughness". IMO it's actually "athleticism". It's that combination of speed/strength/balance that allows you to make the play on the field, when being pushed or chased by a DB/LB.

I think this really is strong evidence that Marc Anthony is an awful minority owner.

I wonder if he is our Martellus Bennett? From the time Bennett was with the Cowboys (not the Giants). Bennett, as a rookie, was portrayed negatively on Hard Knocks too.

That's an interesting point because IF the Dolphins try and attack this position via free agency, my money is on Martellus Bennett being the guy, whereas most Dol-fans seem to be hung up on Dustin Keller or Jared Cook.

We will find out next year. I will say that Egnew so far hasn't shown enough to not invest more in tight ends.

Hypothetically Miami would have a quality problem if they get another tight end and the light goes off for Egnew.

Because you think Egnew is athletic and has speed. It was a joke.

In fairness, I doubt Ireland even believes that anymore.

I see no reason for him not to just because Egnew barely played this season. Athleticism and speed isn't something you just lose in a season. Especially at Egnew's age.

Don't sweat it man, this is typical of the average fan of any team in any sport.

If the guy is great then he is great at everything! Like Marino was a great QB so lots of fans thought he would be a great QB coach.
And conversely if a guy is disappointing then he sucks at everything.

Why clearly? Because he didn't play much? Do you really believe there is nothing else that factors into not playing, other than athleticism and speed? Is that all there is?

I've looked at his college film, as recently as a few weeks ago. I'm sorry but I don't think he ever looked "extremely athletic" and "very fast".

The fact that he couldn't get on the field despite the glaring need for more speed and athleticism on offense doesn't bode well. And as I stated, I never thought he was very athletic or fast, so yeah... I feel pretty good about my opinion. Either he's not very good or it was a glaring omission by the coaching staff having him behind Jeron Mastrud.

I thought the same thing when I saw him in the Hard Knocks shows, I thought he looked and sounded like a *****. Hopefully he'll man up this offseason because that is a horrible waste of a draft pick if he doesn't at least secure a backup role.

Wouldn't be the first time combine numbers didn't translate to the field. Egnew can jump and run a 4.6 but I don't think he can do it in pads on a football field.

    I hope I'm wrong.

Guy was getting open against NE. I don't think athleticism is his biggest issue. I think his problem is, as has been mentioned, he's a *****.

    Oh.

I think the speed of the game is what makes him like that. I certainly didn't see a player who was afraid of taking hits in college. I think that's something he could overcome.
