Does nobody remember that Coyle at one point coached arguably the best CB tandem in the NFL in Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall? The year Joseph left, they got a solid CB in Nate Clements and drafted Taylor Mays which covered a fair amount of the loss of Joseph. The root of this idea is in that he made a floundering first round pick in Reggie Nelson look good. The thing is, Nelson is still playing well with Coyle gone and had similar numbers to fan favorite Reshad Jones (although Jones was a better overall player). One thing also overlooked is the solid front four that Cincy has had that is great at pressure and helped the back end of their defense. I'm not willing to hand our pass defense over to a "hodge-podge" of guys because of an out of context story about our current DC's coaching prowess. Not saying that he's not good, but that's way to risky. As well, if he is good at squeezing milk out of rocks, getting rid of Vontae Davis made no sense, and Sean Smith should have had a season where we we're at this point clamoring for him to be retained.
Let him walk and use those resources more efficiently? Letting him go does create a hole but at the same time it also frees up more resources. And I'm not necessarily suggesting that he shouldn't be re-signed. But the reality is Miami has an inherent advantage here and they can most accurately place a value on Smith. They shouldn't pay him more than they feel he is worth.
Problem is...he won't want a "reasonable price". For me the ceiling is 6M per year, this dude has no buisness making 7 or 8 IMO. We could possibly get a Gholston for that.
On top of that, the team is in the process of trying to build a winning team culture, and giving big long-term contracts to players like these sends the opposite message to your roster, that you're rewarding players who don't exemplify the characteristics of winners.
Davis was not buying into Philbins way of doing things. Both Smith and Davis are avg players that have screwed up priorities. Cut the cancer out… the Fins are never going to be a winning organization with soft players that are more worried about partying and their personal issues then the team concept.
the guy played 50 something % of the defensive snaps for the Colts this year. Guy has all the physical tools in the world… but he is never going to amount to crap because he does not have the mental commitment to his craft
This is true. Though to be fair, we dont necessarily know if this is the case with Smith. Thats the advantage Miami has here. They can judge Smiths character better than the other 31 teams.
But can he cover Troys jock and if the jock is thrown at him? Can he catch it? [I agree he is no Troy Vincent]
Except we have no idea what he is talking about. The only we know that he is an impending free agent who is in negotiations and he made a tweet. We don't know anything that could connect the two.
Well, pretty clear to me that he is watching a game and is jealous of the scheme the CB's he is watching are playing… then he says "one day" as in… one day I will be in their shoes. pretty easy to read between the lines.
We know exactly what he's talking about. Its clear he wants to be able to use whatever technique he wants, as well as talk trash on the field. Its also clear that he didn't have the liberty to do those things in Miami. I'm not sure how thats debatable.
He can talk trash when he can back it up. As far as technique, he hasn't earned the latitude to freelance imo.
What is an out of context story? It should be pretty easy to accept at this point that he's been able to revitalize a plethora of disappointments, idiots, and man-children. Not only that, but given the strength of what he has done the fact that his team was willing to trade Davis outright rather than put him on the field or start him should be a tremendous red flag. Seriously...Taylor Mays, Pac-Man Jones, Reggie Nelson, Chris Crocker, Gibril Wilson, and Roy Williams? It is really an unfathomable mentality that would have you side with Vontae Davis' dubious track record as a professional over that of Kevin Coyle.
there's a saying that is applicable to most fields of business, including football: the enemy of great is good. S Smith looks good at times, but he'll never be great. Holding onto someone that is sometimes good because you're afraid of the void left means you'll never be great. S Smith is the Chad Henne of our defense, let him go. we may suffer through some rookie growing pains, but have a shot to be much better in the end.
Yeah, Ive never been a fan of his. Priorities are off. Waaayy off. As for Freddie, that's actually his brother. He was at our tailgate smoking bud and whatnot. Was a cool dude and all, but man. You're a brother of a NFL player and you smoking **** in the open at the tailgate? No smart, IMO.
And he would be the kind of guy you'd want to keep around if he were only "good" (not great), but had the personality makeup to contribute to the winning culture you're trying to develop. Brian Hartline is "good" (not great), but he's a guy who comes to play every week, and he has the kind of mature, professional, "team first" (not "me first") mentality you want when you're trying to build a team culture.
I'll grant you Nelson's still playing about as well as he did last year under Coyle. But, Taylor Mays? Cincinnati didn't draft him, San Francisco did, nor does he even start. He lost that job to Chris Crocker, who was signed off the street. Nate Clements has been playing safety because their safeties opposite Nelson have been so bad - Mays, George Iloka, and Crocker at times. Their pass-rush is good, and their interior guys are scary good. But, considering what he's done to make Leon Hall good, make Adam Pacman Jones a quality starter, and getting by with guys like Brandon McGhee and Morgan Trent as slot guys - I don't think that story is out of context. Certainly, I think Miami needs to address a need at CB somehow, be it the draft, free agency, or both. It's not like Miami's pass defense was all that stellar with Davis and Smith starting. But, I think with the depth guys that Miami *could* have going into this season - Carroll, McCann, Patterson - I think that's something to work with if you add another quality starting CB.
Must be nice to trash talk all you want.....ask for a lot of money...make NO PLAYS at all.....jump up and down when you knock ONE ball down...and just walk away indifferent when you don't make any plays on the next 10 passes thrown your way. Now we know what has held Sean Smith back these past few years...his ability to play any way he wants and to trash talk....BRILLIANT!
He is much better at man than he is zone. Man allows him to play his best, but the fact he can't play both is the problem here. Let him walk and draft Milliner.
No we didn't. The money Jimmy gave to Keith Sims could have been applied to matching Vincent's offer sheet. It was a matter of priorities. Jimmy hemmed and hawed about matching anyway, waited till the last day, then tried to match but was too late, the 7 day window to match had just expired. Jimmy could have also resigned Irving Fryar rather than signing Fred Barnett. Fryar said he never even heard from Miami and was definitely open to returning. He signed with Philly for about the same as Jimmy gave Barnett and his bum knee.
I love the panic over how we could possibly ever find a replacement for Sean Smith. You guys realize Sean Smith is pretty damn average to begin with right? I'm sure we could plug anywhere from 6-9 guys in free agency and be no worse off if not entirely better. Were pretty solid from #2 on down once everyone is healthy. Were just short a true #1 option that Smith never was. We were also far worse off the year we drafted Vontae and Smith when all we had was an old injured Will Allen. I wouldn't worry about 1 spot.
Well he was the one who had him demoted in the first place. He didn't really seem to be against it either when Ireland brought it to him on Hard Knocks. We just better convert that pick into a solid starter and not Egnew!
