I'm not so sure that I like Cordarelle Patterson any better than this guy, plus he has a more substantial track record. Very good size, very good speed and very smooth imo, both running and catching. He looks like a more natural receiver to me. Patton also has some quicks and escapability that I like very much, check out this juke at 3:12 and again at 4:01: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htOC2hKV7iM Also, nice burst and speed at 5:08. Interesting quote: "I feel like (Quinton Patton) from Louisiana Tech is the best receiver I've played against since I've been here. I've gone against some good ones in the SEC, too, but he's probably the most complete." ~ Mississippi State CB Jonathan Banks,ESPN.com, Oct. 28, 2011 That is from 2011 and pre-dates Patterson at UT I would think, but then again Banks did shut down Patterson as per KB21. Bottom line, I think I'd rather have Banks at #12 and a WR such as Patton as opposed to risking over drafting Patterson in the 1st and fishing for CB talent later in the draft.
I love this guy. Quick, pretty good hands, gets open. He had 21 catches and 4TDs vs A&M. He was a monster.
What round is he projecting? Cause I'd probably pass out from no blood in my brain if we can get him and Bailey.
I can't remember a draft with this many second round receiver talents I felt had strong chances of becoming above average NFL starters.
In 2008, zero wide receivers were drafted in the first round and TEN were drafted in the second round. Those receivers: Donnie Avery, St. Louis Devin Thomas, Washington Jordy Nelson, Green Bay James Hardy, Buffalo Eddie Royal, Denver Jerome Simpson, Cincinnati DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Malcolm Kelly, Washington Limas Sweed, Pittsburgh Dexter Jackson, Tampa Bay Wide receiver is such a hit or miss position.
The Texas A&M game is the only tape I've seen of him, but here are some thoughts: -Very quick feet like Alen said. Helps him get separation close to the line of scrimmage and make tacklers miss when he has the ball in his hands. -Not afraid of contact. Goes over the middle a lot. -Good blocking receiver. Helped his RB score a touchdown because Patton had walled the CB off deep in the end zone. Smartly pulled back on a potential block in the back situation too. Love to see a WR that will block. -Has the speed to make a big play. Not a 4.3 guy, I think, but he can get down the field in a hurry. -Playmaker with the ball in his hands. Consistently made a one on one defender miss after catching a quick screen pass out wide. Clutch play at the end of the game too to score a long TD off of a drag route. Ran over 50 yards after the catch, iirc. Would be happy taking him in the second, ecstatic in the third.
I would have Quinton Patton solidly in a group including Terrance Williams, Robert Woods, Keenan Allen and DeAndre Hopkins. Below Cordarrelle Patterson and Stedman Bailey. Marquess Wilson is shaping up to be a heck of a value pick.
I have Patton in the third tier. I don't see his production translating. Most of his catches were screens and curls against non-existant coverage. He showed some ability to beat press, but was fairly inconsistent catching the ball. I don't think his hands are nearly as good as most of the WRs we've talked about here. He has elusiveness, but I don't know that it will be as impressive against NFL level talent.
You have to wonder if you could see something similar this year where the value looks to be so good in rounds 2 and 3 and no real elite WR prospects that some of the guys who are considered 1st rounders don't fall a little bit. If a guy like Terrence Williams gets to the Dolphins pick in the 2nd round and they chose Bowe or Jennings over Wallace in FA I think he would be a fantastic pick.
To me, Quinton Patton is one of the wide receivers in this draft that has the physical characteristics of the wide receivers Joe Philbin had in Green Bay. He doesn't have great size and probably won't test out with great speed, but everything will be solid. His production at Louisiana Tech was very similar to the production Greg Jennings had at Western Michigan.
I like Patton. Also like what I see from Aaron Dobson. There are some very good wideouts in this draft. And not necessarily in round one either.
That's the dilemma, plenty to go around for the 2nd round. Dobson certainly looks like a playmaker, but I wonder about his downfield speed- his size and hands sure seem good, though. Patton looks rock solid and smooth to me, with better quicks than I expected. CK made a good call on the slightly disappearing from the radar Marquess Wilson, and I have to admit that the more of Patterson that I watch, the more I like. Tough call on him at #12 imo, but I wouldn't be disappointed at all if we took him. He certainly cuts well, but I;d be hesitant to equate his abiity in that regard to a harvin or Austin. Overall, in terms of size, speed, quicks, hands and physicality I still think that the best receiver in this draft that I've seen film on is Da'Rick Rogers. Not the fastest, but he does have good wheels and a superb all around game imo. Tough over the middle, excellent off of the line, a solid deep threat- pretty much everything except that I'd like him to be a tad faster. And a lot less prone to getting in trouble.
but Jennings is a 4.4 guy and is more explosive, making his height a non-issue, whereas Patton could use an extra inch or two.
I think he's bigger and plays bigger than Greg Jennings. Patton claims to be a 4.42 guy. We'll see if that's true.
With Jacoby Ford, I viewed him as a WR first, track guy second. If Goodwin is close to this I'd be interested in him.
Essentially between Jasper Collins, Corey Fuller, Chad Bumphis and Marquise Goodwin, you have a group of fast guys you'd maybe think about in the slot. All have some questions about their consistency in running routes and especially tracking/catching the football. It looked to me like Collins really disappeared and especially his hands got a lot worse when corners got as physical as they will be in the NFL. Bumphis' hands may IMO be beyond recovery, almost to where I'm tempted to immediately convert him to corner. Fuller's got the makings of good hands but consistency eludes him as he's really only just getting into the sport in general, and his height at 6'2" gives him the chance at being able to move outside eventually as he learns more. Every one of them are slot guys that can get vertical. I'm very tempted to place Markus Wheaton in the same category.
From GBN: The most impressive WR I saw today was QUINTON PATTON/La Tech. At 6’0/202 he’s got nice size for the League. He also showed some really smooth route running and great hands today. He appears to be a pure hands-catcher and I am anxious to see what his 40-time turns out to be at the COMBINE. He got open deep several times today and had some very nice receptions. On his longest play he made a tumbling End Zone catch after about 20-yards worth of hand fighting with the CB trying to cover him. As I watched him work today I had visions of a young GREG JENNINGS dancing in my head. I wonder if TED THOMPSON saw the same thing? Seeing as the PACKERS may need to replace JENNINGS on their roster for the 2013 season and beyond, the question now becomes how early will PATTON go in April. I’ve seen nothing the last two days to change my mind that PATTON is a solid 2nd Rounder. He could be gone unless a team like the PACKERS, in need of a new potential No. 1 receiver, is willing to take him late in Round 1. http://www.gbnreport.com/seniorbowlreport.htm
While I can't tell for sure what Miami is looking for in a wide receiver, Quinton Patton just seems to have so many similarities to the Green Bay receivers, in particular Greg Jennings, to make me think he would be a perfect match for Miami. I think probably the two best fits at wide receiver for Miami in this draft are Quinton Patton and Keenan Allen, who has a lot of Jordy Nelson in him with his RAC ability and size.
Robert Woods is a the guy I would want with a 2nd if he runs well..I think he's going under the radar, would take him over Patton.
