Clips from an interview with Ireland...

    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...s-for-this-offseason-20130122,0,5193732.story

Look, I know a lof of you aren't Ireland fans...I'm nervous myself. However, the Dolphins have a lot of ammunition and the potential to turn things around very quickly. Not to mention there is a logo change coming in a few months.

I must say...I feel it is a very fun time to be a Dolphins fan.

Hmm, sounds like he is looking at Guards and passrushing DT's, he mentioned up the middle a couple of times.

FWIW, I'm neutral leaning positive towards Ireland, but 4 straight losing seasons comes at a cost.

He is right about Sparano v Philbin, different approaches and needs, that takes time to accomplish, like it or not.

Indeed its an exciting offseason..... we've had high hopes before, but we havent had a young QB to build around in 30 years. That paired with the $ to spend and extra 2nd & 3rd picks. Then you throw in the fact that the team is finally updating its look........... The turn-around is imminent. They're finally doing whats necessary and I can't freakin wait to watch it unfold.

What i took from the chop-block of comments is that they're preparing for Long to test the market and leave via Free Agency. Ireland understands that passing isnt everything in today's offense... you have to be physical and run with success. You also need big play ability because the Manning/Brady methodical approach is only so effective against a championship caliber defense. I like how he mentioned that Philbins type of player not only differs from sparano's in style of play, but also in personality.

For all the talk of having lots of cap space and ammo, there isn't much about where that came from. The contracts that are expiring and the guys who were traded or allowed to walk were what should have been the core of a playoff team. So, yes, there's lots of cap space... because the players who should be taking up that space weren't good or were let go.

Personally I thought if we had stuck with Sparano and MMoore at Qb, we would have made the playoffs.

BUT we were maybe a 1 win and done type of team, even if Marshall had been retained, we just do not have enough difference makers on all 3 units, we have 1 or 2 guys per unit, to make a SB run you need 5-6 guys who make things happen.

Would have liked to hear Ireland's response to whether or not Carpenter is going to face competition this year.

Desides already made the point but the Dolphins have a lot of LIABILITIES in addition to all of the assets that everyone talks about.

The Dolphins have $46 million in expected cap room. They are expected to release Richard Marshall which will put them between $49-50 million, but they'll need $6-7 million for draft picks which puts them back down at $43 million. So they have $43 million in room and 5 picks in the first two days of the Draft to cover the following liabilities:

    *WR Brandon Marshall (starter)
    LT Jake Long (starter)
    DT Randy Starks (starter)
    CB Sean Smith (starter)
    *CB Vontae Davis (starter)
    RB Reggie Bush (starter)
    WR Brian Hartline (starter)
    TE Anthony Fasano (starter)
    FS Chris Clemons (starter)
*DE Jason Taylor (situational pass rush)
    DT Tony McDaniel (rotational)

*Note: Yes I'm aware that Brandon Marshall, Vontae Davis and Jason Taylor were lost a year ago but they remain liabilities because the front office never replaced them, and in fact in the cases of Marshall and Davis the compensation they arranged for their losses was for the most part shoved into this offseason (which is why we have 5 picks on days one and two and not just 3 like everyone else). The Dolphins attempted to replace Taylor with Olivier Vernon, but appear to have gotten a different type of player than they thought they were getting.

So they have $43 million in cap space and 5 draft picks to try and cover all of these liabilities. And that's if they don't voluntarily rip open more holes as they did a year ago. For example, I've had the feeling for a while they might not like Karlos Dansby after he publicly ripped the staff twice, once for cutting OchoCinco and a second time after the first NE game where Coyle was being questioned by the media for having Cam Wake and Jared Odrick off the field for a few snaps of the final back-breaking drive. Recently Jeff Ireland noted that Koa Misi can play "outside or inside". If they cut Dansby with the idea of moving Misi inside, they've opened up another liability they have to cover.

Those are a lot of liabilities to have to cover. Even if you have a fantastic draft you've maybe covered 2 starting spots and 1 rotational spot with your big draft picks.

I haven't heard that Marshall is expected to get cut. Do you have a link for that?

I think it was a Miami Herald article, very recent one. They said they expect he'll be cut, and they gave a little color into just how injured Marshall's back got this year, and it didn't sound pretty.

The only reason I didn't list "CB Richard Marshall (situational nickel/slot)" as amongst the liabilities is because by claiming Dimitri Patteron I believe they've already covered that liability...at the cost of $4.5 million in 2013.

remember part of our nice run last year was after we fired Sparano and Bowles took over. Sparano wasn't inspiring anyone last season whatsoever.
With Matt Moore in last year's system (Daboll and Nolan) we might have been 8 or 9 wins this season, but who cares? no pain, no gain. this year was hopefully the pain

No, I don't, if one peruses Ck's Fa list, we probably are going to lose over half of those guys, we are in for a rebuild.

That we sort of need tbh, we simply have to become more athletic and attacking in all 3 phases of the game.

That means..youngsters, which means..losses while they learn their jobs.

You have to love the schadenfreude of praising Ireland for trading players we know are good for players who may or may not be good and creating cap space, not through some shrewd management but by simply failing to resign anyone of consequence prior to this off season.

basically... I'm supposed to praise Ireland for doing something any GM can do, trading their best players for high draft picks and letting all these core players they acquired over the years all hit the market in the same year while the shoddy roster finishes with a losing season year after year?

Yeah, no crap.... the cap space came from somewhere..... What a breakthrough ! The idea is that the money spent on these starters can be re-allocated. The excitement is over the flexibility the team has to re-make the roster. We have more than enough resources to bring them back, just about all of them. The illusion being created that we'll only have more holes is an assumption that we won't even spend the money or draft players that could contribute from the 5/top 100 picks.

You make up for the lack of an injured LT making Elite $.... with a Pro-bowl Wr.... and find a servicable Tackle that can stay on the field. You replace Fasano with Clay, Starks with Odrick, Bush with Miller, and so on without much of a drop off.... the extra money can be used to actually improve the team instead of over paying some players that can be replaced.

Why do you continually ignore the fact that a Parcells/Sparano led team require different sort of players than a Philbin led team? I seriously don't understand this.

That's a good way to think about it. We have $43 million in space because:

Our franchise LT isn't playing like one
    Our star receiver didn't fit
    Our top corner didn't fit
Everyone else's contracts were allowed to expire at the same time

I fail to see why Vontae or Marshall would not fit in this or any system.

And other Ireland finds like Daniel Thomas would probably suck in any system.

Plus it's an excuse. Dwight Freeney and Mathis didn't exactly fit a3-4 but the Colts made it work. Dolphins can do the same

I see, so when I question you as to why you ignore X, you respond by ignoring X. Carry on.
