I'm writing about Jones because apparently he's lighting it up at the Senior Bowl- I'm flying blind except for what I've seen on youtube, and for what it's worth it shows that he has some pop to his game as a pass rusher, run defender and a guy who can be a play maker, create some havoc. Good use of hands and leverage, looks like he can hold his own at the LOS. Good speed for a DE, more in line with what we're looking for as a prototypical 4/3 DE at 6-4, 275. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w0mKUGNuWk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MFwjRvzvFI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8IB-0TktD8
From the two days of practice at the Senior Bowl that I've watched, he's been the most impressive pass rusher during individual drills. The first thing that I saw on every rep was how freakishly fast he is. This speed caused standout tackle Eric Fisher to panic and step too wide, and Jones cut nicely inside to get to the passer. I really like this guy but don't know if he'd suit as a replacement for Odrick on the edge as Coyle seems to like bigger, primarily run defending DE types.
Not a replacement, but for starters the missing link as a guy who can come in as a pass rushing DE on passing downs when Odrick is bumped inside to DE. A good balance pick for the DL imo, I just wonder how high he's going to go, looks like a player. Looks like a 2nd round consideration to me.
Yeah that'd make sense. Just depends on how many holes we fill during free agency I would think. It's a luxury I'd love to have.
I could see this: 1. CB Johnthan Banks 2. WR Quinton Patton 2. DE Datone Jones 3. OLB Sean Porter 3. FS Philip Thomas 4. WR Marquess Wilson 5. WR Marquise Goodwin Depending on the RB situation I'd be looking at Knile Davis, too. That draft is WR heavy I know, and of course depends on what happens in FA. I'd also have to take a hard look at the TE's, too, but I'm hopeful that Egnew can contribute next year. Still, as usual, pissed about Donald Thomas turning in a great year for New England. That is utterly disgusting that we released him and he was one of the best Guards in football last year, especially given our need at the position. Nauseating. Also, at this point given what Goodwin has shown at the Senior Bowl, getting him in the 5th rd might be wishful thinking- that kid is more than a track star playing football on the side.
Big fan of his. He has good tape to back up the Senior Bowl work. Plays low, exceptional quickness and good burst. Wouldn't surprise me if he's a Patriots come late April.
Everyone talked about Barr but i heard Datones name a lot this year watching the bruins games. He's definitely got a motor. Would love to see him wearing aqua
Yeah I was watching the conference championship for fauria and Barr but this guy kept showing up. He can play, won't make it past 2nd rd
Hi Jim! Started a duplicate thread by mistake! Hope the mods merge that post into your thread because it had notes from the NY Times on Jones Senior Bowl practices.
It's all good, the more we can learn about this guy the better. Btw, good article, thx. I don't know anything about that TE McDonald, but to me Datone Jones and Quinton Patton look like very good matches for the Dolphins.
Seriously, we are SO blessed this year. I have our needs as WR, DE, OL, TE, CB, FS. This draft has great receivers all the way to the late second round. Ditto the DEs. OL runs good to the third round with more than a few good zone blocking type linemen. There are multiple good pass catching TEs from the 1st through the 4th rounds. CB may be average, not extraordinary in this draft. FS has a few good options in rounds 2-4 also. I cannot remember a draft where our needs matched so perfectly with the depth of the draft at those positions.
