Evan Silva is pretty high on the kid and brought him up after Ireland talked about him recently. He has to be one of the youngest players drafted in some time (turning 21 just a day before the NFL Draft last year). These are from Matt Waldman. First is a rundown on Miller's potential with a nice college video (watched this last year but it's a nice reminder of the kid's explosiveness). Compares him to Portis: http://mattwaldmanrsp.com/2013/02/05/emerging-talents-lamar-miller/ The second link is a rookie scouting portfolio checklist from two games. Fascinating detailed work from Waldman: http://mattwaldmanrsp.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/lamar-miller-samples.pdf Given that Tannehill is still "young" as far as QB starts and that Miller is just plain young, this gives me more hope for a greater improvement from these players. Still just potential but there are some positives here.
Agree. My only concern with Miller is whether he has the mental focus to execute at a high level. Some first year gaffes made me wonder.
I'm not sure how he got 5 yards a carry with that blocking and the fact that he didn't look like he was balanced or running behind his pads, but I know the dude can run the Rock, I think it's all just him adjusting his vision and feet to the tempo at this level..he's so young, so gifted, has that ideal speed and size ratio like Waldman points out..The last couple weeks I've been gaining some confidence that we should just say fu&$ it, and let the kid grow in our offense, let him give RT a nice outlet with hands and speed..Looks like he runs with some patience, can explode thru a crease, sounds good for the zone stuff ya know.
Miller going to be the hot gamble pick for Fantasty Football next year. Happy I grabbed him in the 2nd round of my Dynasty draft.
I love Waldman's reports and I agree with him on Miller. IMO RB is one of the easier positions for fans to watch and recognize elite talent, at least when it comes to running the ball. And Miller is a guy who clearly flashes that talent. I agree with Waldman that he does so to a greater extent than Portis did although I wouldn't rate him as high as I did Edgerrin James coming out.
So what you are saying is that Miller made mistakes or "gaffes" so terrible that it makes you think that this (just turned 21 prior to the draft) rookie running back will never be elite? Or are you saying he just made some rookie mistakes?
He has the potential to be a true game changer. If he puts it all together he can be a pro bowl running back for years to come. I know people on here hate comparisons but it just flashed in my mind, Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman and now we just need a Michael Irvin. They all came into the league a year apart, 1988, 89 and 1990.
Stop drinking the Kool aid on this hometown product. He hasn't proven anything at the NFL level so far. As of right now the guy is over rated.
I'm not exactly convinced that mommabilly, WhiteIbanez, and LBfinest aren't different sides of the same split personality disorder.
I love the kids potential, always have. I wondered why he slipped to the 4th, and I assume now it's bc he was a bad interview and/or people questioned is intelligence. After being productive in so little snaps last year, and not getting more playing time, you have to assume he was struggling with the playbook and the IQ needed to execute. Tannehill is going to be a stud, but he needs to be able to change things at the line and count on Miller's ability to keep up mentally. As exciting as Lamar Miller is, he can't be out there if he is a pass protection liability. And if he's out there, and he is a liablity, the league will become privy to it, and blitz and end up injuring Tannehill, which obviously we can't have
Im hoping a year in the system will help iron that out. Not just for him, for Matthews, Clay and the other young guys too.
I agree with the writer in the article that's talks about his pass blocking, sometimes he gets that good initial pop in there but doesn't keep leverage or finish.
Lets not forget that Lamar also has great hands, is very good at getting out as an outlet...I think Reggie is a goner.
You fell in love with a player with fresh legs that comes off the bench to spell another when the defense is worn down. Bush did all the heavy lifting in that drive. This is what I'm talking about with Dolphin fans getting excited about a guy who has proven nothing at all. Miami Dolphins at 10:24 2. 1-10-MIA 25(10:24) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 29 for 4 yards (33-T.Branch). 3. 2-6-MIA 29(9:39) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 44 for 15 yards (23-J.Hanson). 4. 1-10-MIA 44(9:06) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 49 for 5 yards (52-P.Wheeler). 5. 2-5-MIA 49(8:13) 22-R.Bush up the middle to OAK 47 for 4 yards (33-T.Branch). OAK-56-M.Burris was injured during the play. His return is Probable. 6. 3-1-OAK 47(7:39) 17-R.Tannehill pass short right to 22-R.Bush to OAK 22 for 25 yards (24-M.Huff). 7. 1-10-OAK 22(7:01) 22-R.Bush up the middle to OAK 16 for 6 yards (52-P.Wheeler). 8. 2-4-OAK 16(5:57) 22-R.Bush left guard to OAK 15 for 1 yard (23-J.Hanson). 9. 3-3-OAK 15(5:14) 26-L.Miller left tackle for 15 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
I like Miller but I didn't see anything that screams every down back. I'd love to see a Steven Jackson or Eddy Lacy in the mix to give us a dynamic combo. Miller and Thomas as our 1-2 makes me nervous.
It may be the homer in me, but I thought he looked like a younger, bigger, stronger, and possibly faster Bush. I thought it was a damn shame he didn't get carries. I also am a big enough homer to hope Reggie is on another team next year. It is only because I do not believe that the coaches will give the kid the carries if Bush is still here. If they can figure out how to do the right thing with the situation, then I'm all for keeping a playmaker....Just not for the lack of moving forward with the stubbornness displayed the last half of the season....or was the blocking really that bad?
I wonder if Ireland and Philbin think Jonas Gray could be that guy. He's 5'10" 230lbs and runs pretty well for someone that size. Obviously, we don't know anything because he didn't play, but I believe he returned to practice at one point last year.
get a room would ya? Like a lot of what I see in this kid, secret to his development may be how well Sherman and the RB's coach (we have one, right?) coach him up and get him used to play call changes and NFL speed, I think when the game slows down for him, he could be very special indeed. The blocking is my only significan worry, and it is significant.
I didn't see it either, but I do think it has a lot to do with his balance and how quickly he was seeing things, as in not very fast, he was tripping and clumsy at times..he's young man, he's got a lot of talent..Eddie in the 2nd would make me think hard of transforming the whole offensive scheme with him and Miller.
Good question. I dunno much about him either. If we don't sign or draft anyone ill take it to mean they're pretty high on him.
Yeah I saw that too. And then there were other times where he looked pretty damn good. What irked me most was the shying away from contact, going down too easily, and asking out if the game after a couple carries. He ran like a aging vet trying to preserve his body more than rookie trying to make a name for himself and earn more PT.
Imo, he's a player where the brain and the feet are connected, its built into his running style,if he's uncomfortable with the speed, the feet won't work right, he's got to get the tempo down before you start to see the raw talent..a young 21 year old player with a perfect size/ speed ratio, there's real reason to hope.
You must have me confused with someone else. My points had nothing to do with Tannehill and everything to do with Miller. The problem with getting overly excited about a guy who has rarely played and calling him a superstar or a gem or whatever is those fans are the first ones to bash and run around with their hair on fire when it doesn't work out. Thus the over rated tag from me on for Miller. He has already been annointed a special player here and he can't even understand his pass protection responsibilites. I remember how excited people got over mediocre backs like Ronnie Brown and Karim Abdul Jabbar regardless of the fact that Miller was cheaper. Your setting yourself up.
Blah, blah, blah. People aren't excited because Miller came out of no where. We saw him play in college. We saw him play in the pros. We liked what we saw. The problem is you enjoy putting your junk in everyone's birthday cake. I seriously don't understand why crusty grumpy bastards feel the need to temper everyone else's enthusiasm. If they prefer to be miserable, than have it and leave the happy people alone.
I liked what I saw from him on the field last year...I never really watched the college film until now...Damn he looks good in some of that. Would be a huge benefit to this offense if he can bring that level of play to the NFL next year.
Come on now, nobody was going to trade up for him that high. It's not like he's Daniel Thomas or something.
I thought when he was drafted that Miller could end up being the steal of the 2012 draft. As a season ticket holder for the Miami Hurricanes, I watched him play during his time with the Canes. I just wonder if he will end up being the primary RB or if he will just be the change of pace back on the team. I hope he ends up being the back many people think he can be, but until he does it on a consistent basis in the NFL, he is still huge question mark. At least it appears most people have finally seen that Thomas was a wasted high draft pick. He is consistently injured and he doesn't get the tough yards in short yardage situations, when he is given the ball . If the Dolphins don't sign Bush, they need to find another RB to go with Miller, because Thomas definitely isn't the answer at the RB position.
I say give him a chance, but we still need someone else to go along with him. I don't feel safe with just the three we have, assuming bush is gone.
