The Miami Dolphins have the cap space and draft picks to build themselves into a contender in the AFC. The man armed with those picks, Jeff Ireland, is not a very popular man in Miami due to his inability to find or land play-makers that could take this team to the next level. Ireland will have a chance to regain credibility on his resume if he can get it right with the most important thing being surrounding Ryan Tannehill with viable weapons. Here are ten names that Mr. Ireland should pay close attention to once free agency begins......

    10-Paul Kruger-Defensive End-Baltimore Ravens:

Coming into the 2012 season many fans in Baltimore would have told you that 2009 2nd round pick Paul Kruger was a bust but he did a great job of proving the doubters wrong with a strong 2012 campaign. This season he racked up 9 sacks, 1 interception, and was the Ravens' primary pass rusher with Terrell Suggs coming off a major injury. Kruger can play with his hand in the dirt or standing up and that versatility will catch the attention of many teams. Kruger would be an ideal fit in Miami playing opposite of Cameron Wake giving the Dolphins quite the pass-rushing duo. The thing I like most about Kruger is how he elevated his play during the Ravens Super Bowl run.

    9-Dannell Ellerbe-Linebacker-Baltimore Ravens

Dannell Ellerbe is the unsung hero of the 2012 Baltimore Ravens. While Ray Lewis ate up the headlines Dannell Ellerbe was the most consistent linebacker the Ravens had. Ellerbe can flow sideline to sideline and is a strong, fundamentally sound tackler. Ellerbe was a difference maker in the Ravens Super Bowl win as he was active among the line of scrimmage and despite playing through injury racked up 9 tackles. Karlos Dansby isn't getting younger and his contract doesn't get any friendlier so finding a guy that contribute and take over the reigns makes a great deal of sense.

    8-Connor Barwin-Defensive End-Houston Texans

In Houston Barwin played more as a standing up outside linebacker and it will be interesting to see how Houston addresses him this off-season. The team has Whitney Mercilus and Brooks Reed under contract but Barwin has be an absolute terror for them since being drafted so letting him go would be a bad decision. In 2011 Barwin has a career year accounting for 11.5 sacks and while his 2012 season wasn't as impressive there is still a ton of upside in this player. Barwin is a high motor player that is very active and give the Dolphins a legitimate pass-rush opposite of Cameron Wake.

    7-Dustin Keller-Tight End-New York Jets

While a lot of attention is on the Dolphins' need at wide receiver I would argue finding a pass-catching tight end is equally as important. The Dolphins' starting tight end, Anthony Fasano, is an unrestricted free agent and his return to the team is unlikely. The Dolphins also drafted Michael Egnew in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft but Egnew failed to catch a pass during the 2012 season. Dustin Keller has been a Dolphins' killer as a member of the New York Jets and was able to produce some good numbers despite being paired with poor quarterback playing during his tenure. Keller can create mismatches when covered by a linebacker and can also threaten the middle of the field.

    6-Anthony Spencer-Defensive End-Dallas Cowboys

We know that Jeff Ireland is the king of recycling former Dallas Cowboys' players and making them Miami Dolphins. The move has not worked so well in the past but this is the time I am hopeful he pulls the trigger. Spencer is the most talented pass rusher available in free agency and the combination of Cameron Wake/Anthony Spencer would be absolutely lethal. Spencer accounted for 11 sacks in his 2012 campaign and even outplayed superstar linebacker Demarcus Ware for a majority of the season. Spencer will not come cheap but the Dolphins who are loaded with cap space would be wise to lock this guy up.

    5-Dwayne Bowe-Wide Receiver-Kansas City Chiefs

Dwayne Bowe grew up in Miami and has expressed interest in playing for the Dolphins in the past. Out of the big three free agents when it comes to the wide receiver position Dwayne Bowe is the most physical of the bunch. Bowe is a red-zone presence catching 39 touchdowns in his six year career. One issue that concerns me when it relates to Bowe is that he has inconsistent hands and drops way too many passes. With that said there is no question Dwayne Bowe would be welcomed to the Dolphins with welcome arms and be the best offensive player on the team as soon as he signs on the dotted line. One bit of information worth noting is that Bowe was drafted by Carl Peterson is very good friends with Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross.

    4-Jairus Byrd-Safety-Buffalo Bills

The Dolphins have one play-maker in their secondary and his name is Reshad Jones. The Dolphins would be wise to pair with him with an equally gifted or even better play-making machine such as Jairus Byrd. Byrd player Cornerback at Oregon but successfully transitioned to safety since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2009. In four years Byrd has accounted for 18 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles. The safety market will be pretty deep in free agency with the likes of Ed Reed, Louis Delmas, Dashon Goldson, Kenny Phillips, and William Moore being available but there is no doubt that Byrd is the best of the bunch.

    3-Sebastian Vollmer-Offensive Tackle-New England Patriots

The Dolphins are not going to give Jake Long the big pay day he wants and he has battled injuries the past two seasons which has led to a major decline in his play. The Dolphins will move 2012 2nd round selection, Jonathan Martin, over to a spot where he is more comfortable which is left tackle and be on the hunt to find a right tackle. Vollmer may very well be the best right tackle in the NFL and the Dolphins can sign him at half the cost of Jake Long.

    2-Greg Jennings-Wide Receiver-Green Bay Packers

At this point it seems like a forgone conclusion that Greg Jennings will be a Miami Dolphin when the 2013 NFL season rolls around but I think he is their secondary option. Jennings knows the Dolphins' offensive system well as he played for Joe Philibin in Green Bay. Jennings is a crafty route runner who can consistently get open. Jennings averages over 7 touchdowns per season and can be the type of player that will speed up the development of Ryan Tannehill. Jennings is interested in playing for the Dolphins as he has already made public comments about doing so.

    1-Mike Wallace-Wide Receiver-Pittsburgh Steelers

Call me crazy but besides Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Larry Fitzgerald, and Julio Jones there is no receiver I'd rather have than Mike Wallace. The Steelers are absolutely crazy for letting this type of talented player walk. The world had a chance seeing what the speed of Torrey Smith did on the Ravens run to clinch a championship and I would argue that Mike Wallace is a far superior player to Smith. Unlike Bowe and Jennings, Wallace is in the prime of his career at only 26 years of age and he has the type of homerun speed that give defenses nightmares. You open up the bank for a player like this and I think Jeff Ireland and the Dolphins' brass agree.

    Other Players Worth Watching Include...

    *Cliff Avril-DE-Detroit Lions
    *Jared Cook-TE-Tennessee Titans
    *Michael Bennett-DE-Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    *Cary Williams-CB-Baltimore Ravens
    *James Casey-TE/FB-Houston Texans
    *Michael Johnson-DE-Cincinnati Bengals

    Nice post, nice assessment.

I liked the idea brought up in one of the other threads of the wombo-combo that is jennings + wallace. Oh How disgusting that would be.

If you can walk away from free agency with say Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings, and Anthony Spencer than the Dolphins are a legitimate threat in the AFC. I suspect that would cost $28 million or so against the cap leaving the team with $18 million to fill other holes and sign draft picks. It's a pipe dream but a very doable one.

Pipe dream indeed. its high risk high reward, you have to leave alot of faith in the draft and hitting quite a bit. Do I think it will happen? No. would be sweet though.

I just don't think JI even has enough faith in himself to pull something like that off, (depending on the draft hits to do it after new major player acquisitions)

    Welcome to the board..

Seeing that the salary cap is going to be flat this year, no real raise there, it should affect the market, I don't think any of those players are going to get what they expected, which is good for us, things are setting up nicely.

I would like to bring back Jake Long, Anthony Fasano, Brian Hartline,, Randy Starks and Chris Clemons.

On your list I would look at Greg Jennings , Anthony spencer, and Vollmer, Kruger and Ellerbe.

I refused to make assumptions like this again after the whole Matt Flynnsanity stuff (although it was a different situation), and promised myself i wouldn't jump to conclusions, but I honestly think Jennings to MIA is a done deal. (based on what we know and my gut, .... AKA nothing)

I have concerns about Kruger, Spencer and Barwin coming in as 4-3 ends after being in 3-4 schemes. Kruger may be the best suited for such a switch cause of his size. Also, id much rather have a CB like Chris Houston or Brent Grimes then Danelle Ellerbe. We need CB's with ball skills and both those guys can do that.

Just imo, welcome to the board

I would still rather go for Wallace, even if he is more expensive then Jennings. Wallace has physical abilities that can't be taught.

I know the criticisms about him regarding the types of routes he runs, but in Arian's offense in Pitt he was basically only asked to get deep. I see no reason why he couldn't learn other routes and become proficient at them (or at least good enough to get by).

If we have enough cap space I would like to see the Dolphins to get via free agency:
    Mike Wallace
    Jairus Byrd
    Anthony Spencer OR Ellerbe
    Dustin Keller

...and if we need not to resign, Long, Fasano and Hartline, I'll be fine with it.

Were we to sign three FA's, Jennings, Byrd, and I guess Wallace. I'd try to trade back and pick up Eifert but if that's not possible I'd swing him at 12. My next two picks would be DE's/OLB's. In this scenario, I trade Bess for a 2nd/3rd and draft Swope in around the fourth round.

Then I sit back and laugh at how easy Madden Franchise mode is to dominate.

    I'll take #7, #3 and #2 please

not sure what Vollmer's price may be, may be too much for us, but we need to sign a decent tackle.
question I have about Barwin, given his inconsistency, how would he project to a 4-3?

absurd. while I would call it a bit of a stretch, it's not a major reach. However, if we could trade down to 15-20 and still pick up Eifert, it would be quite the move.

Thank you for the effort and the write-up.

One problem though is that pretty much all of these guys are relatively big name free agents. I mean you've essentially included all of the biggest names on the market.

Mike Wallace, Dwayne Bowe and Greg Jennings are the three biggest names at receiver on the market depending on what goes on with Wes Welker.

Sebastien Vollmer isn't necessarily THE biggest tackle name set to be available on the market, but that's because we've yet to see whether guys like Jake Long, Ryan Clady and Branden Albert will actually make it to market. If they don't make it to market, you could easily argue Vollmer is the most valuable tackle on the market.

Jared Cook and Dustin Keller are probably two of the four biggest free agent tight end names on the market, along with Fred Davis and Martellus Bennett.

Jairus Byrd is probably the biggest safety name on the market even though I think he's more of a nickel player.

Anthony Spencer, Connor Barwin, Paul Kruger, Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett and Michael Johnson probably constitute 6 of the top 8 pass rushers and defensive ends on the market, the other two being Dwight Freeney and Osi Umenyiora.

Cary Williams is arguably the best corner on the market, set to receive the biggest contract. I say that because Brent Grimes is coming off an Achilles tear, few would argue that Sean Smith is better than Williams, and Derek Cox can never stay healthy.

Really the only bargain level guy highlighted in here is Dannell Ellerbe.

On the one hand, the Dolphins have enough money to be in the market for a big name or two in free agency. And it's really, really important to get that decision right because the cost of getting it wrong is huge. So it's good to highlight some of these guys and consider their strengths and weaknesses as acquisitions.

On the other hand, one thing I personally enjoy more is finding those underrated free agents out there. Guys I've highlighted in the past like Antwaan Barnes in 2011 who re-signed in San Diego for like $1.5 million a year and promptly got double-digit sacks in 2011, or Laurent Robinson when he was coming out of St. Louis and was CHEAP before he had a huge year in Dallas and got too expensive in Jacksonville. Or other underrated pickups like Joel Dreessen or Joique Bell, Juqua Parker, William Hayes, Phillip Wheeler, Manny Lawson, Jarret Johnson and Dimitri Patterson. Even John Abraham, at only about $5 million a year, he was a bargain and I loved him. Those underpaid, overperforming guys can be such a boon when they pan out. Of course, they're not all going to pan out. Most of them won't as a matter of fact.

To that end, that's why I've witten so much about Mike Goodson as an underrated acquisition target.

Here's the thing with Greg Jennings, I literally had him as elite at one point two years ago( better than Brandon Marshall) and I have a chance to get this player, a player that was developed by my head coach, and a need on my team that has reached desperate actions...we've got to aquire him man..

Hard to see guys like Vollmer, Byrd and Ellerbee making it to free agency. I think their teams will really be working to get a deal done with them before FA hits.

The receivers will pretty much be out there for the picking. I expect Ireland to make a run at one of them.

I'm not expecting a big spending spree out of Ireland. I expect he'll go after one or two big name free agents and then wait out others where there may be a positional glut or where he won't have to spend a ton of money (i.e. RB). At this point it's starting to look as if there may be a lot of veterans that could get released which may result in a number of useful players having to settle for depressed market contracts.

The safety free agent class in general is one that deserves exploring. It hasn't been talked about much even though Miami's starter Chris Clemons is an unrestricted free agent.

But guys like Dashon Goldson, William Moore, Louis Delmas, Glover Quin, Kenny Phillips and Pat Chung are all free agents. Not all of them are "free safety" so to speak but I think Miami's use of the safeties has been mutable so there probably wouldn't be as clear distinctions for Miami as you would think.

Rashad Johnson might be worth exploring as well. Everyone loves a good Saban-coached safety.

I agree with that. I expect all of those guys to hit the market.

Cary Williams is good...but I think the same things that apply to Sean Smith very much apply to him. They both gave up about as much as the other this year. Cary is going to be more expensive than Sean and yet isn't proven in your system. I don't much understand the idea of grabbing him instead of Sean.

Brent Grimes and Derek Cox are different stories. I like both. I like Sean Smith but I also like both of those guys. But they have significant injury issues you're going to want to investigate. Grimes especially could be the best corner in the lot but he's 30 years old and coming off an Achilles tear and everything I've ever seen from Jeff Ireland screams at me there's no way he'd go there. I also like Chris Houston if he's cheaper than Sean Smith.

I think we have to add one to the top ten list..

League sources tell CBS' Jason La Canfora that Jermichael Finley is not expected to be with the Packers next season.
Finley is owed a $3.5 million roster bonus in March in addition to his $4.45 million in 2013 base salary. Coming off a season in which he seemed to clash with Aaron Rodgers while recording just 667 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games, we could certainly see the Pack moving on. However, some local reports have Finley sticking thanks to a mini-resurgence late in the season. Expect the Packers to hold off as long as possible on a decision here, in part so they can evaluate the health of potential replacement Andrew Quarless (torn ACL). Feb 6 - 10:51 AM

Imagine a Jennings, FInley, Philbin reunion..

We sign those two guys, our draft opens up completely..Finley is only 26

There's a stat out there that says Sean smith had given up more combined first downs and tds allowed than any other corner in the league...I know he played well early, but I'm just not sure on this dude.

I appreciate the feedback. I guess I should have explained the context of the article a bit more. I think the Dolphins are loaded with supporting players but lack those big-time or great players that can get them over the hump. Also they are losing big names such as Jake Long, Brian Hartline, and Randy Starks. If I had to consider some of the under the radar free agents I would take a look at......

    *Brandon Gibson-Wide Receiver-St. Louis Rams
    *Jermon BushrodOffensive Tackle-New Orleans Saints
    *Arthur Jones-Defensive Tackle-Baltimore Ravens
    *Keenan Lewis-Cornerback-Pittsburgh Steelers
    *Rashad Johnson-Safety-Arizona Cardinals

If you have the cap space and can upgrade from Chris Clemons this off-season is a perfect opportunity to do so. There are 7-8 free agents that are significant upgrades to Clemons and the 2013 draft class (Vaccaro, T. Jefferson, Swearinger, Cyprien, Elam, E. Reid) is loaded with better options.

I should point out, in fairness to the thread, Finley is not a free agent, he's due about 3.5 mill on his salary with another three million added in march if he's retained so close to 7 mill against the cap, speculation is he might get cut..

Rodgers is a cocky sum of a num bastage, so maybe they hate each other...cool..
