Clemons wants to stay, say he and RJ could be the best in the NFL

I don't hate him as much as others, I am willing to see him in the 2nd year under Croyle.

 

I remember another Miami DB saying something like that in the recent past.

As for Clemons ... I would be OK with him for another season or two if the team doesn't focus on finding a better replacement. He may not be an above average player, but safety isn't our biggest priority either imo. If he can improve the angles he takes when closing in on ball carriers and reaction time in pass coverage it would go a long way towards fulfilling his beliefs. But if the team wants more out of his position than a stead/unspectacular player then their going to have to move on because Chris will never be that.

 

I'm all for grooming our young players. I would definitely go into camp with strong competition at almost every position. Including Safety. Oh ya Bring in a kicker to compete as well.

We can't spend big money everywhere. If Clemons comes at a decent price, I'm fine with him. rather spend the money on a CB.

 

I think Clemmons is a solid starting caliber safety. He's not exactly the ballhawk you'd like to have, but he does a fine job. It would be nice to upgrade, but he's probably a cheap option that can allow the Dolphins to allocate their resources elsewhere. I wouldn't mind them drafting a project/upside safety with some ball skills though at some point.

 

Not me! I'm all for resigning him but I'm also all for trying to replace him thru the draft even if they do resign him.

However, if they resign him cheap enough thats excellent. To me, getting one or two Cb's is the top priority in the secondary......even if Smith walks. One if Smith stays, two if he walks.

I have always thought he is a solid safety. There are better safeties in the league but Clemons is a above average safety imo. We have many more urgent needs to address and replacing him would just add another hole in the roster

 

Clemons is a long way from being the best at anything in the NFL. Reshad Jones on the other hand at least has a chance. I'd keep Clemons, if it came along with a FA, or draft pick to compete with him for the job. He just hasnt been good enough. Especially in coverage

 

Clemons is really doing Jones a disservice. Right now Jones is playing at a top level, while Clemons is average, at best. Should we drop him? Meh, he's still young and trending upward, but it comes down to money. Does he expect to be paid like a top 5 safety? Or ****, even a top 10 safety? No thanks.

2 years, 6 million, 4 guaranteed. I'm just wanting to find a replacement. Lock down Jones for 5 years though.

 

I'd rather we focus on WR, OL, & Pass rusher. If a demonstrably better safety is available cheaper, then sure, if not, let it ride till next year.

 

I love this. "Clemons allowed the lowest percentage of passes in his coverage area to be completed for first downs or touchdowns"....yet folks still want him gone. It really is about INT's with some folks..admit it ;p

With all the problems we have at CB...signing Clemons to a solid deal is a lot easier/cheaper then the CB deals/picks we need to make. Why create another hole?

 

There is a much bigger void at Cb as it stands right now.

In a pass happy league, and Smith possibly seeing his last days as a Dolphin, it's going to be a position of dire need. Now drafting one fairly high who can start is a way to keep costs down for now but with Jones being a solid starter and Clemons not have the legs to want a huge contract, it might be smart to solidify the corners with someoen good

 

I wouldn't pay any CB big money. They just don't have the impact of a very good S. I'd keep Clemons if he's cheap and draft one early who would hopefully supplant him as a starter.

 

They have an impactfull player at Safety right now. They have nothing at Cb. Totally disagree on the impact a Cb though. We saw a dynamic duo at Cb for a few years. They helped make the safties better. It all depends on the players...

 

I've seen this stat mentioned before but I think it's misleading. I mean it's not a coincidence that Sean Smith allowed the MOST first downs and touchdowns in the league. Is it not possible that he was given all the blame, which is why Clemons' numbers are so low? It's quite possible that with a better safety, those numbers would be different for Smith.

 

Clemons is far from being one of the best safeties in the game, imo, but I agree with the bolded part. He is serviceable, and thus we should address more pressing needs.

 

How early? I feel like pass rusher at DE is more of an impact position and more owrthy of a 1st or 2a pick. Safety does not enter the equation, to me, until round 3. Maybe 4, if you're content to let him develop behind Clemons.

 

lock him up. If he's already saying he wants to stay he won't be expensive.

 

It depends on the player. I would consider Vacarro at #12 depending on which DEs are there. I would take Jarvis Jones and Werner over Vacarro and maybe Jordan too, but I would probably go Vacarro over Ansah and Mingo. If I did that I would target a Carradine or Lemonier in the second. But other than Vacarro, I wouldn't take any of the other Ss that high. Elam is my next favorite, but I think 12 is too high.

 

clemons just looks stiff/uncomfortable alot of times ,solid but nothing special , we really havnt addressed the safety spot with any luck for a few years , and i was hoping we would this year
but imo you can right that off in FA The franchise number for safeties is an affordable $6.798 million;

so byrd,goldson.moore quite possible get tagged??? and there isnt that much left in FA after that !

i cant really see us using a high draft pick on a safety due to bigger needs [i may be wrong] so we are left with another mid - late round draft pick , the guy on IR kelcie mcCary and jimmy wilson

Yes Smith was given credit for all of Clemons mistakes while the rest of the league was accurately graded. Think about that for a second.

 

Who says that the rest of the league was accurately graded? I don't know what the criteria is for these stats. I'm also not claiming to know anything definitive, but merely pointing out that this could be a situation where the stats could be skewed a bit.

It's also possible that Clemon's numbers are so good because teams just continually went after Sean Smith the whole. Who knows.

 

I think you should try to resign Clemons even if you find another safety.

One of the Dolphins primary defensive goals this offseason needs to be finding a way to deal with the Patriots tight ends, and there's a good chance that involves three safeties and having guy playing down over a tight end, be it as a replacement for a linebacker or cornerback.

Alright but in that case the stat is entirely garbage and means nothing for anyone. You'd have to put RJ in the same category.

 

as long as Clemons was a respectable contract, it would be best to sign him. our S Tandem may not be the best ... but they are good enough - especially when compared to those around the league. I think we finally saw some improvement out of our DBs this year ... need more no question - but would like to believe that we actually have some coaches who -- COACH, and are and will continue to make our players better.

to me, and i say this year after year it seems - we NEED an impact player on the Right side to compliment WAKE. IF we do that, improve our ability to pressure the QB, our 'risk' at CB lessens. We NEED an impact RE and improved LBs.

 

Reshad Jones, stat wise, was one of the top 5 safetys in the league. Chris Clemmons, although not as good as Jones, finished in the top 1/3 of all saftys. They were young , made mistakes but with no pash rush and corners that were no faster then fat ladys running thru mud puddles, yeah, I like both Jones and Clemons.

 

Anyone named Kenny interests you.... or Bob, or Steven, or Phil for that matter, especially Phil Yerbumin.

 

CC is solid, but the guy I want to see get a shot is Amaya, just think he is a ballhawk
