Sean Smith thinks he will get between 8-10 million, on the open market

In training camp, Sean Smith was the most focused player not named Bess, he was so serious..coincidence in a contract year?

I don't know, but overall, I do know that I was disappointed in his play relative to the focus I saw..

8 to 10 million?... Wait, you play the run like a girl, and you don't intercept the pass, basically your the special teams of corners, you got 1/3 rd game.

Maybe sign Tracy Porter, draft a young hungry kid that has compete game, cool swagger, and a tenacity to come up and stick you.

 

I noticed a change in Sean Smith's demeanor since he had a kid... I think since that day he has matured a bit.

 

He is not worth that kind of money.

 

I don't think he'll get that much money personally. I still think $7.0M/yr is about his max which is something I'd be willing to pay. However if he gets somewhere in the $8.0M - $10.0M range then I think it would be smart to move on.

 

Maybe but im doubtful. I think its more likely that this has Irelands handwriting all over it. For better or worse. If it were an isolted incident I might agree with you but the whole roster looks this way, Nobody got extended

 

He is garbage and should be treated as such.

 

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggests that the Dolphins might place RE Jared Odrick on the trade block.
Odrick was drafted to play "five technique" in a 3-4 defense. The Dolphins are a 4-3 now, and Odrick lacks explosive ability requisite for 4-3 defensive ends. "He's not a fit for the scheme," Salguero writes. Odrick has cheap base salaries through 2014, is only 25 years old, and possesses an ideal skill set for the 3-4. He could likely bring back a second-day draft pick via trade.

 

I can't imagine they pay him.

It's not really a particularly sound bit of speculation on the behalf of Salguero. They're not stuck with him at defensive end, they're putting them there because they want to.

 

He was worth 7 Million for about 50% of the season last year, about 1 million after that. Median?? He's worth about 4 mill a year. He will get more but that team will regret it sooner than later.

 

I too, believe I'm worth 8-10 million. Now all have to do is convince someone willing to spend that much on me.

 

this is just how negotions work ppl. they will at 9 mil start and meet at 7.5 mil or so. the seller always starts high and the buyer ireland will go low. 6 mil or so.

He is not getting paid anything close to 7.5 million. Let him test the open market, its going to open his eyes up.

Or because they're starting the 4 best guys. Things may change by September but last year we had no on else to play DE.

 

I'd be ok with anything between 6-8. If the guy ever decides to start hitting people he would be a top 10 CB.

 

Show me a team that pays Sean Smith $7 million + a year and I'll show you a team cutting him in 2 years because of his high salary and inconsistent performance.

 

This strikes me as posturing. Before they had specifically cited the Jason McCourty contract as what they wanted from the Miami Dolphins. Now they're saying that if he gets into the open market he will get AT LEAST that, and more likely a contract approaching the Brandon Carr contract. That's posturing. That's them telling the Dolphins, if you don't accept this Jason McCourty contract now and you try and let the market decide my worth, you're going to get burned for it.

 

I agree. And I doubt Jeff's dumb enough to fall for it. The more talking you do...the less likely you really have options. Plus this is Ireland/Philbin.....you keep things behind closed doors with them. Public blubbering isn't going to help your case.

Cmon...now it's Ireland's fault ?? Were either of these guys approached during the year for extensions ?? Did they turn them down looking at FA ?? Irish has made his share of mistakes. He may or may not be the guy we want/need to get us any further than we are now and I would have like to have seen these guys extended before it got to this point, but to accuse Ireland of not having the foresight without really knowing what has transpired is just wrong...

But you also can't absolve him either. That this becomes just one more headache for Philbin and Coyle can't be good.

 

All I'm saying is that we don't really know what conversations these guys have had. For all we know, they've been trying to get an ext. done. At this point in the careers of these guys, it makes sense to wait it out and go into FA or as was mentioned by CK, this could all be posturing by the agents. The agents don't want guys signing extensions, they want new contracts that attract new money for them and different teams so they can get more 'hits' so to speak with new players on different teams... It may very well be that Irish didn't think that SS24 is worth what he's asking for and that's why there hasn't been an ext. yet...there are several different reasons, other than it all being Irish's fault. I'm beginning to feel bad for the way this guy is portrayed by many on these boards when it is simple speculation. He hasn't gotten the job done for us, there's no doubt, but it's not all his doings...and every situation that comes up it's seems to be really easy to start bashing him, when we don't know what's really happening... We all know that the team doesn't leak much info out, so it's extremely likely that most of this type of bantering is coming from the agents...that's their business and I have no qualms about how this stuff hits the media, but....

Looking at these numbers the first thing that jumps out is that Dallas is obviously not paying for stats, cause Carr was worse than Smith this past season. I'd say neither of them are worth 5 years at $50 million. However, if the market is pretty set, then Smith deserves the deal. I think though that we could pick up someone else for cheap to give us S. Smith/B. Carr production.

 

Who else's "fault" would it be? He is the GM of the Miami Dolphins. I'm sure he approached them (I know he did approach Hartline this year) but the idea is to approach them before they get near free agency when you can get a team-friendly deal. The closer a player gets to free agency, the more likely they are to hold out for it.

I'm not trying to "hate" on Ireland but I think this is definitely something that he can be criticized for.

 

Perhaps. But Sean Smith's agent doesn't have a reputation for grandstanding or for being unreasonable.

 

If this were an isolated incident I would be more inclined to agree with you. However We have somewhere around 10 starters without contract extensions. That is an indication that Ireland decided that he would be better off negotiating with them in the off season.

 

Let S. Smith go.

He has not developed into a talent equal to where he was drafted.
He's a step slow and still to this day has issues turning his head and playing the ball to make plays.
I think you replace his talent level with a mid tier FA CB.
Just my opinion.

Ireland's CB duo was a disappointment.

I think those are the wrong numbers to look at. Or at least, you need more than just those numbers. First off the timeline is important. We should probably be looking at what Brandon Carr and Jason McCourty did the year before they got their contracts.

Jason McCourty (2011): 983 snaps, 563 coverage. 117 attempts, 71 catches (60.6%), 802 yards (6.85 YPA, 1.425 YPPS), 1 TD, 2 INTs, 10 PDs. 100 Tackles, 6 Missed Tackles. 1 FF.
Brandon Carr (2011): 1030 snaps, 526 coverage. 79 attempts, 39 catches (49.4%), 511 yards (6.46 YPA, 0.971 YPPS), 3 TD, 4 INTs, 7 PDs. 44 Tackles, 5 Missed Tackles. 0 FF.
Sean Smith (2012): 1097 snaps, 668 coverage. 104 attempts, 61 catches (58.7%), 793 yards (7.63 YPA, 1.187 YPPS), 5 TD, 2 INTs, 5 PDs. 57 Tackles, 11 Missed Tackles. 3 FF.

An honest assessment. Brandon Carr obviously had the more elite level cover statistics and fittingly he got the elite level contract.

You're definitely looking at Sean Smith versus Jason McCourty and that's not an easy comparison. Smith allowed significantly fewer yards per pass snap in his direction, but significantly more yards per attempt. I think you call that one a wash. The big ones in favor of McCourty obviously are his only allowing 1 touchdown while also accumulating 100 tackles, versus Smith allowing 5 touchdowns and accumulating only 57 tackles (while missing 11 tackles). But on the flip side, Sean Smith was the team's #1 corner in 2012 and drew the heaviest and hardest responsibilities in coverage, whereas McCourty was second fiddle to Cortland Finnegan the year before McCourty got his contract. Also, Sean Smith created 3 turnovers versus McCourty's creating 2 turnovers. McCourty's 1 forced fumble didn't end up a turnover. Sean Smith forced 3 fumbles and 2 of them didn't end up as turnovers, but 1 of them did.

Overall I think Smith's agent is right to model his contract offer after McCourty's deal and I think the Dolphins should aim to pay just under that amount of money, reflecting that Smith is very close to level player that McCourty is but not quite the same.

 

Sounds like more of the same to me. People *****ing about...whatever. The team isn't enough. Lets *****. We ain't resigning our players from the team that ain't good enough, faster than any team in the league. Lets *****.

The season ended less than a week ago. This time of the year is all about posturing, as we get closer to the start of FA negotiations get more serious. Does anyone think we have any must keep players about to hit the market? Guys so damn good that we should out bid ourselves and not even explore possible upgrades from other teams in FA or in the draft?

If so, please name them.

 

If Sean Smith and his agent are serious about these NEW price tags (the $8 to $10 million price, as opposed to what he originally said with the McCourty $7.3 million price) then there's no way you sign him. At that kind of risk/reward you do actually have better options even if they are a little riskier than you'd like.

I think it's arguable that this new talk is just posturing, as I said before. But if it's not, then I will fully acknowledge Smith has just priced himself right out of town and I'm OK with that.

At that point you make a hard play for Brent Grimes if you're convinced his Achilles tear is not going to be a problem (which is a hard conclusion for anyone to draw), or much more likely Derek Cox of the Jaguars. You've got to be extremely uncomfortable with the fact Cox has never stayed healthy through a season, but the fact of the matter is he's a good player. The problem? Jacksonville knows this too. They won't want to let him go. In fact there's talk of using the franchise tag on him.

I don't have as much of a read on Cary Williams at the moment. My feeling is that Cary Williams is set to get paid a lot of money but arguably he's only a little bit better than Sean Smith.

The guy who may actually come available and be worth the price of admission is Chris Houston of the Detroit Lions. His tape actually makes him a worthwhile target. You're under no illusions of getting an elite caliber player there, but at least you won't pay an elite caliber price.

 

I'm really liking the idea of Chris Houston in the #2 CB slot, as I've been saying over and over.

As for the #1 slot, I just straight up have no idea. I can't decipher it.

Not at all, not talking about Carroll but IMO we had probably two of the worst CBs in the NFL last year. They both should have TOAST on the back of their jerseys instead of their names. As bad as Carroll was it reality he finished ranked higher then Sean Smith was. Smith had a negative grade in every category you can have for a CB. Thats by PFF and STATS LLC ( NFL pays stats LLC to keep its stats)
