Superhero/Comic Book Robin (1) Sidekick to: Batman Advantages: Perhaps the most famous sidekick. Ever. Eventually got his own comic. Cool utility belt. Disadvantages: Bad rep amongst hardcore comic enthusiasts. Almost wrecked film franchise. Those ridiculous tights. vs. Battlecat (3) Sidekick to: He-Man Advantages: Incredibly ferocious. Perhaps the most badass of all animal sidekicks. Disadvantages: Alter ego, Cringer, is incredible wuss. Allows He-Man to ride on his back. Cartoon/Comedic Hobbes (8) Sidekick to: Calvin Advantages: Pounce-and-tackle attack. Mastery of the scientific method. Good-natured. Disadvantages: Poor drawing and math skills. Weakness for the ladies. vs. Barney Rubble (2) Sidekick to: Fred Flintstone Advantages: Devoted friend. Hot wife. Disadvantages: Annoying laugh. Complicit in the marketing of tobacco to youngsters in the 1960s. Literary/Mythical Tonto (1) Sidekick to: Lone Ranger Advantages: Superb horseman and marksman. Disadvantages: Iffy communication skills. vs. Dr. Watson (3) Sidekick to: Sherlock Holmes Advantages: Skilled physician. Capable, brave and successful with women. Disadvantages: Intellect appears ordinary, even dull, in comparison with the brilliant Holmes. WTF ?!? R2-D2 (1) Sidekick to: C-3PO Advantages: Computer genius. Bravery. Believed by many to be the hero, with 3PO the sidekick. Disadvantages: Unintelligible to humans. Slow in ground movement. vs. Chewbacca (2) Sidekick to: Han Solo Advantages: Consumately skilled fighter, smuggler and pilot. Disadvantages: Unintelligible to all except Solo and other Wookies. Socially challenged.
Chewie vs. R2D2 is just downright mean. I flipped a coin because I didn;t want a vote against either on my conscience.
Well, it's early, but at this point, we could have a Final Four with NO #1 seeds. Wow! The other comment I have is that it looks like I had Hobbes seeded a little low. I underestimated his enduring appeal, but I figured since the comic strip has been out of circulation for 13 years, Hobbes Q Score may be down a little bit.
Hobbes>>>Barney!! And I voted Chewie, hes the essential sidekick to han, R2 is harder to distinguish his role. Is he the sidekick to 3P0 or the other way around? Maybe Luke? Then again Lucas hinted the whole thing was about the robots, so is he the star? Chewie on the other hand is def. the sidekick. Hes a fierce fighter, loyal to a fault, a great companion etc etc.
Chewie vs R2 is simply the best matchup we're likely to get from this tourney. R2 was probably the more prototypical sidekick, always there to help the hero out of a jam. But Chewie was simply cooler. And he was the sidekick to the cooler hero.
Have a hard time with the idea that Dr. Watson was a more significant sidekick for Sherlock than Tonto is to the Lone Ranger. Peanut Butter & Jelly = Lone Ranger & Tonto
