True, but in a lot cases its almost impossible to tell what someone's true intentions are. Headhunters need to be dealt with, but i dont think objectionable calls and judgement calls are the best way to go
If it,s 3rd and 10 all you have to do is through a intermediate pass over the middle, if he catches it, 1st down, if there's a hint of interference, 1st down, if the WR is hit to hard and drops it, 1st down. There are wr's that draw PI calls, soon they will hone their craft to draw big hit penalties.
The ideal solution to the problem, is teaching guys how to actually wrap up and tackle again, rather than launching themselves at each other, which puts everyone in jeopardy.
Time for safeties to start going at the knees. Get ready for more acl/mcl tears then ever before in college football.
I say it is a good rule. Rugby has it in place for the same types of hits and it is very rare to see the deliberate targeting of the head in play. Plenty of NFL players have delivered deliberate intentional high shots over the years knowing the worst that could happen was a fine. The system isn't having a strong enough deterrent, so ejection from the game should be on the table.
this. as an official, it's near impossible to judge intent. you have no idea what is going on inside someone's head. we have to watch enough crap going on at the same time in our section of the field. now we have to be mind readers. the 15 yard penalty is plenty. and if they are ruled unsportsmanlike, all it takes is 2 of those and they are gone from the game.
I watching the 1985 bears on youtube and if you watch most of thier big hits are helmet to helmet. They would be flagged on a huge percentage of thier 72 sacks. You can't hit the qb low you can hit them high no w onder these quaterbacks put these huge numbers every year.Marino would dominate this league now and would he would no doubt in my mind have numerous superbowl rings.
Marino dominated the NFL during his prime. He wasn't the reason the Dolphins didn't win any Super Bowls during that time. It was the lousy defense, and no running game which was the problem. If Marino was now in his prime, but he still had to play with a team with a lousy defense and no running game, he still wouldn't have any Super Bowl wins. One player, no matter how great he might be as a player can not win a Super Bowl by himself.
No, you're right it wont. Nothing ever will completely rid concussions from the game, but you can lessen them. That's what its all about. You can still have a hard hitting, physical game, without the head and neck injuries. There's zero need for guys to be out there leading with their helmets to make tackles. ZERO.
Thats my whole pioint you don't need a great defence or a running game to win in this crappy league now.You win by scoring touchdowns through the air.
The problem with this new rule is not that they are protecting "defenseless players". THAT IS GREAT. The problem is it is too subjective of a call in real speed. How many NFL games have we seen where a big legal hit on a wr is called this penalty because the refs are being trained to call the big hit. Not necessarily the illegal hit. Which with this rule you are going to end up ejecting a player for a clean, but big hit. It is going to happen. I really do not like that. Keep the 15 yard penalty, have the league review ALL of those hits (called and not called) then decide if that player should be suspended or not. If it is a really obvious illegal hit then suspend the kid for multiple games. That, IMO keeps all sides happy. It gets the point across to the players to be clean, but protects the refs from making a bad call in the heat of the moment.
