It's probably a good idea to allow your players to hit the open market. Too many players have salary demands based on monies paid during past seasons. The longer signing period favors the owners; and many players will that other teams are not outbidding their original team.

Here's a link on past salary cap. In the past, the yearly bump made it easy to sign free agents without impacting current roster. With the money pie the same size as 4 years ago, teams need to pay its starters significantly lower than top players in their position.
    http://nflcommunications.com/2010/02/24/year-by-year-salary-cap/
    Year Maximum Team Salary
    2009 $123 million
    2008 $116 million
    2007 $109 million
    2006 $102 million
    2005 $85.5 million
    2004 $80.582 million

i havnt looked down all the 29 pages so i dont know if this guy has been mentioned .geoff schwartz off lineman

he diddnt start last year for the vikes but has been previously with the panthers , he can play both guard positions and tackle
with long, garner fa we got no depth what so ever , and imo would be a realistic starter at either guard spot and right tackle
and i think he be cheaper than $3m being quoted what garner wants and better!

only question would he suit our system irelands tried to bring in system guys like hicks, steinbach etc last year but they were washed up
this guy is mid 20`s with little mileage under his feet , low risk big gain imo

Feel ya, but think we have RT solution in house with John Jerry

RG is a different story, but it's easily filled

If'n the Dolphins indeed be preparing an offer for Michael Johnson once free agency opens, a bit of speculation that is supported by no facts or evidence to date...I approve.

He'd be tremendous opposite Wake. Marvin Lewis was quoted within the past few days saying there's "...not much traction..." in terms of re-signing him to a long-term deal. That'd jive with the sentiments in the other thread of learning more in a few days time as I think Cincinnati would wait as long as possible before applying the tag.

Thoughts on Quin Glover - DB, Houston?

Read recently that they are debating franchising either Glover or Connor Barwin.

I'd potentially be interested in him as a role player but I doubt he'd be too interested in taking a role player's salary.

I've always liked Glover Quin (his first name is Glover). Seems like he's played every spot in the secondary. Dolphins seem interested in keeping Chris Clemons but if not then Quin would be one of the guys I look up as a potential replacement.

Glover Quinn is from the same area of Mississippi that my wife is from. He's a Pike County guy. My wife went to McComb HS, and I think Glover was a North Pike grad.

Just updating the upcoming outside FAs that I like...really not too many guys I like here...

    RB - Mike Goodson
    FB - James Casey
TE - Martellus Bennett, Delanie Walker
WR - Greg Jennings, Miles Austin (trade), Domenik Hixon
OL - Will Beatty (LT), Geoff Schwartz (RG), Jason Smith (RG)
DE - Michael Johnson (RDE), Antwaan Barnes (Situational)
DT - Desmond Bryant (3-Tech), Derek Landri (Nickel)
    LB - Brad Jones
CB - Derek Cox, Chris Houston, E.J. Biggers, Chris Owens (nickel)
S - William Moore, Kenny Phillips, Rashad Johnson

Notes: I subtracted Michael Jenkins (CB) from the list after taking a closer look at him. I just don't like what I see. I added (CB) E.J. Biggers to the list based on what I saw of him in 2012. He was fantastic. I added trade possibility Miles Austin at WR to the list. I believe he can score touchdowns for Miami. I added LT Will Beatty to the list. I saw a lot of his work in 2012 and I think he's really coming into his own. The Giants want to keep him but this may be one of those battles they can't win. I much prefer him at left tackle over Jonathan Martin.

I also added Jason Smith to the list and I would play him at Right Guard, which would be a departure from what he's done thus far in the NFL. He was drafted high by the Rams to be a right tackle. His development path has seen him become a really iffy pass protector that actually run blocks fairly well. That's why this year with the Jets they turned him into a situation run blocker as a third tackle. He played all 16 games as a part time rotator, and of his 265 total snaps, 211 of them were run plays. He played mostly to the right of the right tackle on those plays. He's a mobile guy and I like what he does at the second level, and I also like how he plays through the whistle on every play. He gets exposed in pass protection when he's got to deal with pass rushers in space. That's why I think putting him in the phone booth at right guard and may actually salvage his career. On the other hand, he could look hopeless trying to anchor against powerful defensive tackles. You don't know unless you try it. One thing is relative sure though, his career is just about over if something doesn't work out for him soon. You're not going to have to pay hardly anything for him and if he doesn't look good as a guard then you can just cut him.

I added DE Michael Johnson to the list. One reason the Dolphins could be onto him is because he destroyed Jake Long when the two played one another. Just watch the tape. He's perfect for Miami because they're a little bit handcuffed with respect to Cameron Wake's being a career left end yet not looking or playing like your typical left end. It necessitates that you have a guy like Johnson on the other side, who is a little bit oversized and arguably a little bit better (or at least more consistent) against the run than rushing the passer. One issue I had with Johnson coming out was stamina. He wore down during games, cramped up, etc. That was part of the reason he was just a part time player at a time when a player of his caliber should have been full time. He's gotten control of that. Against the Giants facing Will Beatty, whom as I said I like a lot, those 1st & 2nd quarter wins for Beatty were turning into 3rd & 4th quarter wins for Michael Johnson. The 4th quarter was his best quarter.

I added FB James Casey to the list after careful consideration and a long amount of film view. I really like what he offers this system as a fullback. If you're going to put a player out on the field on offense, and he's not going to be an offensive lineman, then it would be nice if he were a dangerous playmaker. He can make plays like a real tight end (including breaking tackles and making guys miss), yet he can also block like a real fullback, and I like that. He's an upgrade at fullback over Jorvorskie Lane, even as a lead blocker, and I truly mean that. I'm not basing that off nothing. I'm basing it off film. He gives you flexibility in how you use him on the field and he would free up Charles Clay to be used in more creative ways on the line of scrimmage (detached or attached), which I believe would be best for him.

I think that would be an overpay but it all depends on if the Cowboys really need to cut salary. If they do then we can get him cheap (mid-round pick) because they'll have to release him anyways. If they don't have to cut him, then it will take more.

Things appear to be developing or have been developing and becoming known to us now. Here are 10 observations:
    1. It appears Miami wants Starks to stay inside and Odrick to shed some weight and stay at DE.
    2. Linebacker appears to be staying status quo unless there are unexpected trades or cuts. All those guys are under contract.
    3. Secondary is still where the most questions linger. This a strong safety draft, but not so much at cb.
    4. If Long leaves and Martin stays it appears he is the starting left tackle. That leaves a much easier position at rt to fill, either through free agency or draft.
    5. Miami needs to get more athletic at OG, and I expect at least one OG to be drafted.
    6. Do you utilize the tight end position more and how high do you draft one? It appears Miami wants to keep Fasano, which was somewhat unclear. I expect one tight end to be drafted high for the second year in a row (I consider 3rd round high).
    7. Miami will draft a wr. The question is how much imput Philbin has in that process. I think he would like a kid like Bailey, Allen, Williams, or Patton, and cautious about a kid like Patterson. If Wallace is signed I believe they lean on reliable hands and route runners. I like the Vernon kid from Duke.
    8. If reports are true, Bush is gone. But finding a play maker from that position is still a need. I don't rely on present talent on this roster, and I like Miller. They apparently wanted Bush back at a reduced cost to be a third down back and receiver. Who fits this bill in free agency or in the draft? I found it interesting that Austin from WVA had much of his almost 500 total yards in a game against Texas I believe from lining up in the backfield.
    9. If Moore isn't resigned, there will be a need to get a backup qb.
    10. Plain and simple. Tannehill has to have support to run this offense. Ireland has to hit it on some skill position players either in free agency or in the draft.

I like Richie, but would still love to sign Levitre. Move Richie to RG and Jerry to RT. Levitre is an ideal LG and is able to play LT in a pinch and hold his own. One season the Bills played him at 3 or 4 different spots due to injuries.

That's a good point, but I also don't think Michael Johnson has proven to be worthy of a contract more hefty than Wake's at this point in time. But, I think he's a player on the upswing.

There's no way in the world I'm going into the season with that WR Corp. 2-3 years down the line that might look pretty good, but receiver is often a fairly difficult position to learn for a rookie and I would fear the damage it might do to Tannehill's growth.

I'm not sure how or why he would get a bigger deal than what Ray Edwards got when he left Minnesota (where he was super productive) to Atlanta (where obviously he didn't end up being productive). I compared their situations earlier and you'd actually think Johnson gets less. I believe Edwards got like $5 to $6 million.

Quick question, do you think Alex Smith getting traded would have any influence on Matt Moore's decision to stay with the team knowing that there is one less starting job in the NFL?

I think there are a lot of teams who still potentially need a starting quarterback, and cutting down on one I don't radically changes the field.

Couldn't agree more. We need to add a veteran WR in FA to buy us time on a rookie. Can't go into another season with a ? at wideout. If you're going this route of not signing a vet and addressing the position via the draft, why not at least bring back Hartline? Makes no sense.

PhinsRDbest, your obviously very knowledgeable on the subject but I don't think that I personally would be very happy with that scenario.

Martin at LT, replace Incognito with Levitre, Pouncey @ C,#12 pick a RG, and another big contract for Pulumbo ? I'd rather stand pat with Long and Incogs and scrape up a RG to compete with Jerry.

Pick 2A is Ertz after we already resign Fasano ?

The only help for D-line is Starks on 1 year deal and a 3rd round pick ?

    LBs get nothing ?

In the Def. backfield we pay Clemons and replace Smith with Marshall ? Patterson at a premium too.

Ready to give 350 + carries to Lamar Miller and Dennis Johnson ?

And last but not least, if our upgrade at WR winds up being Patton and Swope... we won't be going anywhere fast.

If the GM wanted to do this he may risk being assassinated or something, let alone being fired.
