In his group, the first group, I thought he was the most talented I saw...there were times when he takes the least amount of movement to cover the same amount of space, thus resulting in covering that space faster than others...you could literally see his instincts even in drills.
I'd pass. At best I'd give a fifth rounder. He was awful against Bama in the NCG. Got picked on all night by them.
Loved mathieu in college. Big fan. Dude was a baller. He's also quite the **** up. But mathieu would instantly replace Jimmy Wilson and I gaurantee hed make some big plays. ...I'd take him in the 3rd. 2nd is ridiculous. He may still be a **** up in the NFL, but we've failed do badly on some guys in the middle rounds (white, turner, egnew etc) that I'm game for some risk taking.
I agree with everything you said, but times have changed. Florida has rampant drugs because it's the gateway for much of the drugs coming into the US. But now, many states aren't fighting the drug war vs pot anymore like they used to. While they are still going after dealers, it's pretty easy to get your hands on it in many small towns. I can tell you that it's extremely easy up here in Massachusetts.
The simple fact of the matter is that even without the character questions, the guy on the field is nothing more than a 3rd to 5th round guy that you draft as a 4th/5th cornerback and special teams player. Fans get so caught up in the highlights that are shown of this guy on ESPN that they completely ignore the times where his stiffness and lack of technique cause him to get beat, routinely.
When you said we met with him in the Draft subforum thread I presumed you meant at Indy. So I was going by your word on that. So it was at the Senior Bowl? I did not even know Mathieu was there.
I agree he looked really smooth in drills. He wasn't nearly the best in the 40, bench, either jump, the cone or shuttles though. To say he was "the best on the field" I'd want to see every single DB in every drill before stating that as a fact about Mathieu or anyone else.
I would give strong consideration to Slay, the other cb at Mississippi St., who outperformed Banks today. A little shorter, but faster and with more fluid movement. I like Slay.
Honest mistake. I would've thought the same thing, pappy. Yeah he showed up for a day to let teams get an advanced look at him and so forth. No pads of course.
IDK, I'll call Spiller tomorrow. BTW, on that note, I was in Salt Lake City for work a while back. Went to a club away from downtown. Place was partying p.r.e.t.t.y hardcore. There was a chick wearing just a pair of overalls (to intentionally look hot, not b/c she was a redneck) whom I could NOT. quit. drooling over. Best side boob shot I've ever seen. I digress. I think South Fla people have this false conception that just b/c there are more clubs and more expensive clubs in South Fla that they party harder and do more drugs etc than everywhere else.
my take was just an overall view of what he was doing on the field, just pure natural athleticism for the position, he looked the smoothest to me in his group, which is half of the players, I thought you could really see the ball skills, hands, hi pointing, shiftiness, low center of gravity, flipping of the hips, and just overall speed on his reactionary skills..On his back pedal drill, he literally flipped his hips to the opposite direction in one step, and was completely going in the other direction, no one else did it that fluidly or quickly. It's hard to explain, I just got Real sense of how he makes plays, he's sneaky quick, and highly instinctive, check these stats out for two years as a fresh and soph.. Kid can get behind defenders with his talent, dodging, seeking low, deceptive movement. Sacks..6 Int's...4 Tackles..133 Forced fumbles..11 Fumble recoveries ..6 Tackles for loss..16 Tds scored in two years...4. Over a 17 yard average on punt return. That's just two young years.. Also, his big criticisms are technique, well, we know the kid was relying on his raw talent, we can see that on film, but we also know that the combine forces you to display your technique, and when focused we saw executed very nicely and with ease, so what I'm saying is if you take the risk, and at the next level, he starts to understand how good technique could improve his overall game, you might have special on your hands. How bout the natural ability to high point and catch the football, he was easily the best in the group at that, doesn't ball skills in the air count for something these days?.
You really think that his workout was not very good? The word coming out of Indy from people in the circle said it was a fantastic workout. "Ridiculous" was the term used by the best corner of all time. I thought it was excellent. I dont know where your coming from with a statement like "not very good" NJ
Night Train Lane said that? He must have said it from the grave, since he passed away over 10 yrs ago.
He caught my eye as well. I don't know anything about him other than seeing him in one of the drills. But, he did look very fluid and natural in that one drill. In particular, I noticed how well he went up and high pointed the ball. As for Mathieu, from what I know about him, I think he and South Beach would most likely not be a very good combination.
Read again, I said it was average," not very good". As in it was an average workout, the same way most scouts have said it was. Most scouts have him rated as a 3rd round or lower
how many defensive Heisman finalist have become nfl bust its pretty rare ground for a defensive player to even be a finalist right so the kid can play for sure
In College yes, I'm not saying he will be a bust, but this is a silly argument. Look at the Heisman winners that have been busts.
Think again. 45 games, 44 starts, 22 sacks. 99 total tackles, 40 assisted tackles. Almost half of his career sacks(10/22) came in his rookie season as did half of his career tackles(48/99).
I'm talking about the movement drills, not 40, which was very good not average, not vert, movement drills and ball skills, average to you ?
yes, he did not stand out, he was not one of the worse, he was not one of the best, he was in the pack ( average)
I wish. There may be a few guys who try to protect him from himself, but the guys he is around the most? The DBs? Nah. Every rook is a threat to the livelihood of guys who are already on the team, especiqlly at their own position. I'd bet they are more interested in seeing him screw up (self preservation) than mentoring and keeping him out of trouble.
Everything I have read about him tells me he is a World class ****ing idiot. Pass, let him be someone else's problem.
Honey Badger as a Heisman finalist says more about the voting process than it does about the player. IMO he wasn't a finalist for best player on his own team that year.
**** that. I want Wake spending his hours learning how to bring heat on the blind side the way he does from the front side. Yeah I said it. Can't call yourself an elite pass rusher if you can't beat NFL LTs consistently. Odrick gets the heat but he was doing Wake's job last year. John Martin switched sides as a Rook, why can't the Kracken? Let him focus on joining Peppers, Ware, Allen in wreaking havoc from both sides of the line. Let Denney do the babysitting.
you dun did it now. This is the time where you and I part ways for a bit, at least until this all blows over. I'll send some cards and what not to your hospital room though, perhaps a DVD of Hartline's greatest plays.
Its nonsense to say this kid has top 5-10 talent, he doesn't, not even close. He has a cool nickname but his play/talent do not warrant a top 10 selection even if he was a saint. If we waste a 2nd rounder on him I'll be pissed.
