I think he's worth a draft pick but someone else will have already taken him higher than his value should suggest IMO.

I don't see that at all. I think that he'll walk onto an NFL camp and immediately be a pass rushing option at DE and he'll progress rapidly as an overall DE- there is nothing that I see on film that would lead me to believe that he can't be an excellent DE. He's planet theory defined, and to me that physical ability manifests itself in his play and what I see on tape.

To me it's not a question of being a workout warrior- it's a guy of that size, speed and strength that pops out on film, has that explosion to be a legitimate pas rusher, playmaker and strong run defender. I focused initially on the Texas A&M tape to watch him grapple with Joeckel and get beat by one of the best OTs in the country- he got outclassed. But even in that game he took it to Joeckel a few times, and although as one would expect elite prospect Joeckel won that battle, Hunt still had 3 tackles, a sack and 2 blocked kicks. A 6-8 guy who is strong, blazing fast and can bend the arc will see action early and often in the NFL imo.

The bottom line is that Hunt is a giant of a man who proved to be the strongest player at the combine and is easily the most explosive of the big, legitimate DEs at the combine, Mingo and Williams excluded as they are in my eyes clearly OLBs. Players like Ansah and Gholston can't touch him as a pass rusher, and imo Devin Taylor, who I like, is behind him as a pass rusher as well.

As to Hunt's nearly unique physical ability, which clearly trumps that of Ansah in most regards:

The native of Estonia sounds like a PlayStation football creation: A 6-foot-8, 280 pounder with an 82-inch wingspan. Yet despite those long arms, he can still bench 225 35 times, and his coach, SMU track coach Dave Wollman, predicts Hunt will rep it 45 times next year at the NFL combine and clock a 4.60 40-yard dash. Hunt has cleaned 384 pounds, snatched 345 and vertical jumped 36 inches. "He's off-the-scale powerful," said Wollman. "On that kind of frame, seeing the cleans and the snatch go that high to the ceiling, it is amazing."

There's also some interesting stuff as per Devin Taylor- I really didn't see the change of direction in him that this guy is referrring to, but I'll look again. Very intriguing player, but I watched Hunt and Taylor video back to back and from what I saw Taylor simply does not have Hunt's explosive qualities. In terms of the bigger DE's Hunt, Taylor and Washington could all nicely fill the role of pass rushing DE imo, also becoming every down DEs. The one guy who just did not show the explosion I'd prefer is Mallicah Goodman- for waht we need on this team now, he's just no the pass rushing threat that's called for imo. As per Taylor:

"Taylor has blossomed in Columbia in a spectacular way. He arrived at 215 pounds, but now is an explosive 267-pounder who just broad-jumped 10-feet, 11-inches, verticals in the high 30s and has change-of-direction skills like a 5-9 cornerback. He has started 32 games in his career and has 27 TFLs and 15.5 sacks ."

To me the comment about having change of direction skills like a 5-9 CB is a head scratcher. I like that he consistently makes tackles, looks like about 4 per game, but as with Cornelious Washington, where are the sacks, 3 on the year? That's a warning sign imo- Taylor can certainly cover some ground, but I just don't see explosion in his game like Hunt has.

You didn't see it the first time but you did after taking a look at it again after the combine? I think you may be letting his combine workout cloud your judgement of him

No, I took a more thorough look. Hunt's athleticism was extremely evident the first time around, tough to hide it with a player who's that big, fast and strong. I wouldn't have bothered posting the OP if I wasn't impressed by what I saw on film- the combine is a good gauge of athletic ability, but either the player looks good on film or he doesn't. Some of the DEs look good on film to me and some don't, that's how it goes, we all have our own opinions.

Next on the list is Cornelious Washington, who was impressive to me not only in his combine results, but how he looked in motion- outstanding athlete, also looks like a prototypical DE to me at a cut 6-4, 265. I'll look for certain qualities in the film and also try to figure out how a guy who is that big, athletic and fast can go an entire season and not get one sack. I'll take another look at Sean Porter as well to try to figure out why he didn't show the explosion that I expected at the combine.
