William Gholston, Quanterus Smith and Cornelius Washington off the board in the 4th round. About 50 picks before I'm up again.
I'm going over some film and trying to figure out how Washington could possibly have been so unproductive last year after flashing immense athletic ability at the combine and performing admirably at the Senior Bowl game and practices. Jarvis Jones arguably had better stats in one game- 13 tackles, 3 sacks against UF- than Washington had all year- 22 tackles, 1/2 sack. I am trying so hard to like him, and something just smells there. What a freaking athlete, what a lack of production. Still going over Georgia defense video- jarvis Jones has some funky mojo style that I'm trying to figure out, Ogletree is ludicrously good at what he does well, chase and make plays/phenomenal closing speed, not the best at the LOS, and I have yet to see anything not to like about Sanders Commings, a sleeper imo.
I think it's just the classic case of in certain defenses you give your players a lot to think about and it's great if the players can handle it, but not great at all if they can't. Some other defenses though streamline things, give their players less to think about, and focus on them just using their extreme physical gifts to run around and make plays. That kind of defense is great if you've got a bunch of talent and players that play fast. Not so great if you don't.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBD3yxwYZ9o Too many plays like :12 here- and there are better examples but I can't remember where they are- where Washington looks like he has no freaking clue what he's doing. And Jarvis Jones- I'd like to know what he's thinking at the play here :32- he's playing with the intensity of a fan trying to time a run to the bathroom just before a commercial break. Washington at 1:10- paging McFly, come in McFly. :58 Commings- this might not look like much to some, Commings here on a blitz, but to me I see a guy who's 215 lbs and can move- very smooth. Can play tight at the LOS, can hit- same thing- the more I see the more I like. I iso'd Rambo on a blitz earlier and he looks markedly slower than Commings, not the same caliber athlete. Commings keeps passing the test and Washington keeps failing. This tape is an Ogletree tape, which I like a lot because I'm not trying to watch Olgletree- I get to see the other Georgia defenders without their proverbial makeup on. Someone has to buy Washington a clue, and while doing that get some alka seltzer tablets the size of hockey pucks for his future NFL coaching staff. At the height of my being pissed at Damontre Moore for the combine fiasco I was ready to rate Washingtom ahead of him- after going over the film again the last couple of days, to quote G Dub, not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent at this juncture. Rambo at 1:44- his speed doesn't thrill me. I'm watching this defense and wondering how much better they might have been if Nick Saban was coaching them. I don't think that they played to their potential. 3:10- Washington plays NT in a 3 man front? Not for long- INXs had quite a good song that sums up his performance on this play - Kiss the Dirt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBD3yxwYZ9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnBufgIuwL0 Washington 3:35- time to buy him a clue or break out the jumbo alka seltzer tablets. 3:42- Ernest goes to camp time as Wahington tries to play NT- know what I mean Vern? Let me get this straight- Washington lines up at NT, stunts out wide, get his a** kicked trying to turn the corner, popped and rejected by#11, has an OT in his face and basically gives up, tries to drop back ten yards or so into a zone coverage position while the QB still has the ball in the pocket, no pressure on him and there's no one in the short middle zone anyway, and the QB makes a completion to the left. Pass the alka seltzer, please. The more I watch the more I think that Washington might be a numbskull. You might very well be right- it looks like the coaches might have thrown too much at Washington schematically. Better for him to go the simple route imo- rush the passer, play the run. Why get in all these funky formations and variations with such great defensive talent? Washington is playing NT, dropping into coverage- screw that. They should have had him just play DE and forgotten about the fancy stuff. I'm seeing very little from Washington in the way of football instincts.
I've just been informed that I'm not allowed to draft Peter Lalich at quarterback because he's not in the system and I can't write him in because evidently it would be unfair to others. I'm writing him up in my explanation for whoever I do pick.
RB Ray Graham, Pittsburgh RB Cierre Wood, Notre Dame RB Knile Davis, Arkansas FB Lonnie Pryor, Florida State FB Kyle Juszczyk, Harvard WR Josh Boyce, TCU TE Joseph Fauria, UCLA OT Xavier Nixon, Florida OG Hugh Thornton, Illinois DE Devin Taylor, South Carolina LB Travis Johnson, San Jose State LB Michael Mauti, Penn State LB Jake Knott, Iowa State CB Nickell Robey, USC CB Brandon McGee, Miami (FL) CB Terry Hawthorne, Illinois CB Sanders Commings, Georgia CB Kayvon Webster, South Florida
How dare you be smarter and more prepared than the others. Knile, Davis, Brandon McGee and Sanders Commings look awfully good there. If Jake Long is projected to bolt Xavier Nixon looks good, too.
Considering we're talking about the 6th and 7th rounds, even if Jake Long isn't leaving Xavier Nixon looks good. I'm going to cross my fingers on Xavier being potentially available in the early 200's because I know what I'm doing at 174 and will run up to the podium the moment my pick is up.
True, and I'm surprised that Devin Taylor is still there. Given that you already got your DE and the WR the two corners look awfully good.
Joseph Fauria is "my" guy but he's not the guy I'm running up to the podium with at pick #174. I'll cross my fingers on him getting to the 200's.
Would you use one of the 7s on a kicker? Maher, Hopkins or Sturgis? IMO, Carpenter is overpaid relative to his FG pct, and needs some competition.
I'm going to start writing up my guy in this thread so I have it ready to go and can make the pick immediately. "A player so explosive, he exploded his own heart in a collision during practice..."
Hey CK, Omar just came up with an article saying the Phins might get as high as a 4th round compensatory pick, what say you to that?
Compensatory picks are awarded based on previous year's free agency. This would be for letting Kendall Langford walk.
Some of my favorites are definitely coming off the board. Since my late 3rd round pick the following guys I liked came off: CB Leon McFadden RB Marcus Lattimore RB Johnathan Franklin CB B.W. Webb DE Quanterus Smith WR Chris Harper WR Marquise Goodwin OL Brian Schwenke DE Cornelius Washington LB DeVonte Holloman DE Joe Kruger OG Brian Winters RB Dennis Johnson CB Tharold Simon WR Mark Harrison LB A.J. Klein TE Chris Gragg WR Marquess Wilson OL David Bakhtiari LB Vince Williams OT Xavier Nixon WR Denard Robinson RB Zac Stacy Looking at the following guys on the short list for 174, 204, 206 and 208... RB Cierre Wood, Notre Dame RB Knile Davis, Arkansas WR Josh Boyce, TCU TE Joseph Fauria, UCLA TE Levine Toilolo, USC OG Hugh Thornton, Illinois DE Devin Taylor, South Carolina LB Jake Knott, Iowa State CB Nickell Robey, USC CB Terry Hawthorne, Illinois CB Sanders Commings, Georgia CB Kayvon Webster, South Florida CB D.J. Hayden, Houston Four picks to go. Right now I'm of the mindset I'm taking D.J. Hayden. Anyone want to make a case for me to go with someone else?
You have to go Joseph Fauria… WE dont have a guy on the roster that can do what he does. We need weapons in the red zone… perfect fit with the other TE we already have
I can't speak of DJ Hayden, but imo Devin Taylor, Sanders Commings or Brandon McGee would make a heck of a pick this late. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8qahOLtB1A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oYC9wr_Nlk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZOj305GUkY Still intrigued by DE David Bass- take a look at the int at :41 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJtozzcJTNs
CK IDK if you have any input on the mock draft page design but it would be nice if they had the next five picks (coming up) list. IDK how you keep track of when your pick is coming up...
What are we doing at CB? I know you've spoken about cutting Marshall. Would SSmith, Patterson, Carroll, Wilson be ok with you?
Nickell Robey just went. That one stings. Whenever they get around to making these next 2 picks...this is what I'm sending in... Pick #174: CB D.J. Hayden, Houston The Miami Dolphins waited nervously through nearly 100 picks from their previous selection to this one, and ran to the podium to turn in the card for corner back D.J. Hayden of Houston. Hayden has the potential to be one of the three best corners in the entire Draft, based on film study. The former JUCO transfer lit up the tape with Houston in 2011, his first year off JUCO transfer. He forced an amazing 5 fumbles, intercepted 2 passes (returning 1 for a touchdown), tallied 66 total tackles including 8.0 tackles for loss, and broke up 11 passes. That forced fumble number was second only to Heisman candidate Tyrann Mathieu amongst defensive backs. This year, he was blossoming as a cover corner with 4 interceptions (2 returned for touchdowns) in only 9 games, while also contributing 61 more tackles and 8 more pass breakups. He is an extreme play maker with the length and explosive strength to erase receivers physically, while also possessing the explosive speed and instincts to jump in front of passes and make up lost ground in man. Explosive is the word for D.J. Hayden, as it proved both blessing and curse. He is so explosive, he exploded his own heart, literally, in a collision during a practice. He tore his inferior vena cava, which supplies the heart with blood from the lower half of the body. The injury is 95% fatal, yet he lived due to the diligence and quick thinking of his team doctors. Amazingly, his doctors told him that he would be back to playing football once his sternum heals from the surgery, perhaps as early as four months post-op. Because of the way veins heal, he is not in danger of re-injuring the same vein at the same spot. Already a high character, high work ethic guy, the scare has given him a new perspective on football. He says one of his greatest regrets would have been that in the final game prior to his injury, he did not play as hard or as well as he could have. If not for this momentum-stopping, scary injury, he would have proved an extremely fast riser a la Darius Slay, and gone all the way into the highest parts of Day 2. The Miami Dolphins feel blessed to take him in the 6th round. Almost as blessed as Hayden is to be alive today.
I think you could Hayden with one of your final 3 picks. Not so sure about Devin Taylor being there by then.
Just made my pick official. CB D.J. Hayden, Houston. Just sit back and WATCH this guy play football.
