Mexico's goalie arrested in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - A goalkeeper for Mexico's national soccer team was arrested and charged with resisting arrest after police said he refused to leave a downtown hotel.
Osvaldo Sanchez told reporters in Mexico City that teammates were listening to music in their room and wouldn't lower the volume as the hotel asked. Sanchez said police arrived as he was trying to calm things down, grabbed him, sprayed him with tear gas and took him into custody.
Police had no immediate comment on Sanchez's account. Chicago police carry pepper spray, not tear gas.

Police said Sanchez refused to leave the Westin Michigan Avenue early Monday. The hotel called police, who arrested Sanchez when he again would not leave. He also was charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

We have no case to answer - Real

Ramon Calderon insists Manchester United have "no evidence" that Real Madrid have acted inappropriately in their pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
FIFA confirmed on Monday they had received an official request from United to investigate the matter with the English club claiming Madrid have carried out a deliberate campaign to unsettle the 23-year-old Portugal winger, currently on duty at Euro 2008.
But presdident Calderon is adamant his club have no case to answer.

He said: "They don't have any evidence because nothing has happened.

"All there is is what the papers say and rumours that the player seems to want to leave. But at the moment a move is impossible because United don't want to sell him.

"It's United's right (to complain) but we haven't done anything and we are not going to do anything. It's a matter between the player and his club."

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has denied that the Spanish giants are "obsessed" by Ronaldo.

Blues enlist Hollywood agency to crack U.S. market

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea has signed up to a powerful Hollywood talent agency in a bid to crack the United States market.
Creative Artists Agency has been tasked with marketing the Premier League club's players, organizing money-spinning tours and enhancing the Champions League finalist's brand.
"Together we can build on Chelsea's global business reputation, its unique position as the only soccer club in the center of London, our talent, and our desire to be seen also as a force for good in our local community and around the world," Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said.

CAA was instrumental in bringing England midfielder David Beckham to the LA Galaxy from Real Madrid in its first football deal.

There will be no case. Alex Ferguson is King of tapping other players up; the situation with Ronaldo is the way it is BECAUSE Manchester United have essentially raped the rules for years. 3 months ago after playing Lyon in the CL, Ferguson talked about how he hoped Karim Benzema would sign for United and what an asset he would be in between CL legs. Then after all the Ronaldo stuff, he came out last week and said how well he thought Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz would look at Old Trafford and how well he'd link up with Rooney and Tevez. That's 2 examples in a litany of tapping up cases by Ferguson.

FIFA will chuck it out and Utd will sell Ronaldo to Madrid for £60 million and then sign either Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs or the aforementioned Santa Cruz from Blackburn.

He's another mercenary. Spurs finalised the Dos Santos deal from Barcelona today. Whilst he's alot like Robbie Keane, it may placate the fans when it comes to selling Berbatov. I think Berbatov is mad to go to United, considering how similar he is to what they already have and he's not a brilliant line leader.

In moments of triumph blind eyes are often turned to cringeful behaviour by the victor (think John Prescott's jiving to Things Can Only Get Better on Election Night 1997).

But surely not even Stevie Wonder would turn his head away from Alex Ferguson's accusation that Real Madrid, like their old mate Franco, are lacking in morals.

Because as everyone with the tiniest of smattering of football knowledge can tell you, when it comes to transfer dealings, Fergie is in no position to lecture others.

As for United's threat to urge FIFA to investigate Real Madrid for tapping-up Cristiano Ronaldo, can I, on behalf of world football, say: "Please Sir, bring it on".

Put simply, if Madrid were to ask FIFA to turn the same spotlight on Fergie it would open up a can of worms big enough for Bob Nudd to empty every river in the land of its pike population. The only question to be asked about Ferguson and tapping-up is where do you begin?

Let's stick with the last decade and start with the most publicised example: Jaap Stam detailing in his autobiography the precise methods employed by Fergie in 1998 to tap him up when he was still at PSV Eindhoven.

Ferguson wasn't investigated but Stam was shipped out, according to the Dutchman, for spilling the beans.

Remember in 2003 when United tried to sign Ronaldinho from Paris St Germain? Here's what their president Francis Graille said: "Manchester have not played the game in line with FIFA regulations.

"They have negotiated directly with the player. Even if they have got agreement from the player, they haven't got agreement from his club."

In the January of that year Sunderland chairman Bob Murray described Fergie's approaches to David Bellion as "shabby, despicable, disrespectful, arrogant and unprofessional".

And the previous summer United were accused of tapping-up Rennes full-back Julien Escude, after the France Under-21 international player claimed Ferguson had spoken to him on his mobile phone.

Ask Leeds and Everton about the behind-the-scenes connivance with Rio Ferdinand's and Wayne Rooney's agents before they moved to Old Trafford. Ask Fulham's Mohammed Al Fayed why he raged about Fergie "constantly unsettling my players" as he pursued Luis Saha. Ask Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge why he said in 2006: "We have told Manchester United that they should stop trying to tempt Owen Hargreaves. If they don't, then we will have to turn to FIFA."

But best of all, ask PSV Eindhoven's chairman Harry van Raaij about Fergie's behaviour in courting Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2000. Specifically his quote "he has crossed the line of decency".

Then ask him why, in 2004, when Arjen Robben was given the red-carpet treatment at United's training ground while still a PSV player, van Raaij flew into a rage and said: "It is Ferguson's way of doing business. A leopard never changes his spots."

I could go on but you get the picture. Before Ferguson conjures up images of the Madrid dictator Franco he should look hard into his mirror. For him to question the morals of another club when it comes exerting psychological pressure on a player he's set his sights on, is laughable.

To think a FIFA inquiry into deals which haven't gone strictly by the book would put another club in a worse light than his own, is dangerously deluded.

It must be down to the ease with which he has run rings around the petrified English authorities (as currently exemplified by the FA appealing against themselves for bizarrely letting Fergie and his assistant Carlos Queiroz off an improper conduct charge after attacking referee Martin Atkinson and his boss Keith Hackett).

Fergie knows better than anyone that one of the major reasons for his phenomenal success has been an ability to tie up deals with some of the world's best players.

Deals which, for every club in the world, often mean stretching the rule-book to the limits.

Hypocrisy, eh? Bloody hell.

Because be's way down the pecking order behind Messi and Bojan, etc. Rijkaard's downfall was to play too many show ponies; Henry, Ronaldinho, Messi, Eto'o, Bojan, etc. Too many forward thinking players like Iniesta and Xabi. They had no backbone. Now that Guardiola is in, they're looking to deal Eto'o and Ronaldinho, they will probably let Henry leave should an offer come in for him and they've signed players like Martin Caceres and Seydou Keita and Daniel Alves who have a little backbone. There's plenty of room for the individuals, but much as Real Madrid did by getting rid of the Galacticos, they now have a well oiled machine that runs through Mahamadou Diarra and Wesley Sneijder in midfield. Not through Carlos, Zidane and Beckham.

Yaya plays for Barcelona and is a decent player. I think Inter would like Diarra in Italy, but he's so central to what makes Real tick that I don't think they'll let him go.

Henry has always said that if he returns to English football that there would only ever be two teams he'd consider; Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal for obvious reasons and Liverpool because of the way the fans have always treated him. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who is pally with Steven Gerrard. Prior to Henry signing for Barcelona, Henry was thinking very seriously about an offer to come to Anfield. Gerrard and Henry are very close and I think if Liverpool hadn't had been the next club straight after Arsenal, then he may well have joined. I'm thankful he didn't, but I would eat my own dog before I could ever see Henry at Old Trafford.

Man I've been meaning to ask you, as you probably know Sven Goran is now the HC of Mexico, I figure you have seen him coach the longest of anyone here, and given that the Mexican press doesn't really seem to know what to expect from him, I would like to hear from you or any of the british fans, what they think of him, what should I expect?

He got a terrible deal at Manchester City. He got all he deserved with England. I think he's better suited to club management than International work because when he was England boss he complained about missing the every day involvement. You can't argue with his club record, especially in Italy and Portugal. He has a varied private life in that he was more often on the front page for affairs with women than he was on the back page for successes when he was Engalnd boss. He also stuck too readily to players who werent't working; David Beckham and Frank Lampard are prime examples.

But his players love him and he's worked with Nery Castillo at City. I think he'll get you playing football and if he can keep it in his pants, he'll do a decent job.

Man City owner says club still chasing Ronaldinho

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Manchester City still wants to lure Brazilian star Ronaldinho from FC Barcelona.

"The new manager is looking for new players to join the team. Everything is going well," Thaksin Shinawatra, the City owner and former Thai prime minister, told reporters on the sidelines of a news conference here Monday.

"We are wooing," Ronaldinho, Thaksin said. "We will keep wooing him."

The club's new manager is Mark Hughes, who signed recently after Sven-Goran Eriksson was dismissed by Thaksin after one season.

Ronaldinho has two years left on his Camp Nou contract, but is expected to leave Spain after a disappointing season with Barcelona, where he struggled with injuries.

Thaksin cautioned that there was still issues relating to Ronaldinho's endorsement contracts, but he did not elaborate, according to the Web sites for the Thai newspaper Matichon and INN radio news

Inter boss Mourinho has eye on RVP?

New Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho is reported to have an interest in Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

Rumors have suggested the Dutchman is keen on a move away from the Emirates this summer and, with Inter on the lookout for wingers, Mourinho could offer van Persie a way out.

The Gunners striker is a versatile player who would have no problem plying his trade on the flanks. Inter are rumored to be able to offer the player double his current salary, an element that could see Arsenal lose one of their prized assets.

The 24-year-old has been valued at £15 million, five times more than Arsenal acquired him for in 2004.

Henry reveals 'love' of Anfield

Former Arsenal skipper Thierry Henry has revealed that Liverpool's Anfield is his favorite stadium to play in.

The Barcelona and France striker has played in all the biggest stadiums in Europe, but says the atmosphere at Anfield makes it the best.

Henry said: "For my first few years at Arsenal we didn't do well there, but we improved.

"It's the atmosphere I love. It's unbelievable.

"I've played in a lot of stadiums but for me there is nothing like playing at Liverpool."

His praise of Anfield may be seen as a hint about desiring a move back to England as he has failed to settle down in his first season at Barca, and is known to be good friends with Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.

Henry added: "Nothing can beat Highbury, of course, but playing at Anfield was great.

Rosicky could miss start of season

Gunners' midfielder Tomas Rosicky has revealed that he could miss the start of the new Premier League season because of his knee injury.

Rosicky has been sidelined by a knee injury since January this year and was ruled out of Euro 2008 after going under the knife in May, and although Arsenal thought he was recovering well, the Czech Republic international could well be unable to join his team-mates for pre-season training.

"It will be yet a long time before I return, but at the start of the new season - some time in August - I will hopefully start with training," Rosicky said.

The 27-year old ought to be fully fit in time to captain the Czech side through their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign which kicks off in September.

Milan admit defeat in Ronaldinho transfer race

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has admitted the club cannot compete financially with Manchester City in the race to sign Ronaldinho.

Galliani said Milan and other Italian clubs are being squeezed out of several transfer moves as clubs in England, Spain and Germany have more money to spend.

Milan hearts set on Ade

Arsenal's Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor remains the only target for Italian giants AC Milan, according to club vice-president Adriano Galliani.

The Rossoneri have naturally been linked with a host of big names during the off-season, but finally narrowed the names down to three, with Adebayor alongside Samuel Eto'o of Barcelona and Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

However, Galliani told reporters before entering an Italian League meeting that they were no longer interested in acquiring either Eto'o or Drogba.

He said: "There is no negotiation for Eto'o or Drogba. If we do not get Adebayor, we will remain as we are."

Galliani added that a recent bid for the 24-year-old was emphatically rejected by The Gunners.

Jose targets Chelsea star duo

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he would be keen on signing the Blues' star duo of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

The new Inter Milan boss knows the pair well from his time at the Stamford Bridge helm and would welcome them into his Italian side if given the chance.

Internazionale have stated that signing Lampard is their number one ambition of the summer, but Chelsea would be unlikely to allow their stars to leave the club, especially as they look to a successful future under new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Ronaldinho calm on future despite Barca's stance

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Barcelona midfielder Ronaldinho is "calm" about his future despite his club making clear the former world footballer of the year has no future with the team.

Visiting his native Brazil, Ronaldinho attended Wednesday's match between the national sides of Argentina and Brazil, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

"I have a contract with Barcelona until 2010. Everything is calm right now," Ronaldinho, who missed much of last season to injury, told Brazil's SporTV.

He added that "a lot of things will happen" before Barcelona's preseason training begins on July 19.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Barcelona official said that negotiations for the transfer of Ronaldinho - along with Samuel Eto'o and Deco - are "advanced."

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted very strongly that he is looking to leave the European champions for Real Madrid this summer.
