If we're REALLY interested in re-signing Long... where does Winston fit in? Move Martin to guard, a position he flat out has never played? I don't see it.
Winston makes too much sense ? How much money do you want to spend on RT when we have guys who could step up there ? Your pretty much saying Martin at Lt makes too much sense.
I am assuming they are moving on from Long. Which him re-signing is pretty bleak at the moment. I'd pay about half of what Long will probably make. Winston is the best zone-blocking RT in the game, I'll take him over a 1 year removed TE convert protecting Tannehill.
Unless Ireland is doing a big push to sign Jake Long I see no reason why we have not already signed Winston. The need and the availability are almost a perfect fit.
If that's the plan, this I agree with. Personally, I'm not all that hot with Martin playing LT, but he has shown flashes (and some serious "ugh" moments) but I still believe he can be the zone blocking LT we had hoped. Personally, I think we're wasting John Jerry. He played tackle very well for a 3 game stretch.
Zone blocking or power blocking really has nothing to do with pass rushers coming from the edge on the QBs blindside. Pick whatever blocking scheme you wish but its all mano y mano with our LT and their speed rusher. We are obviously going to get more weapons for Tannehill and when he drops back in the pocket a LT better have his shiiiit together, zone blocking or no zone blocking.
Long and Winston is an either/or thing, we won't sign both. My guess is we give Jake a few days to resign, then if it appears it's not gonna happen, we then shift gears to Winston.
Run blocking yes but pass blocking ? Its man on man and our mans job is to keep their man off our QB. As a rule, out LT is going to see their best guy coming straight to his outer shoulder. Run blocking ? Now, thats an entirely different horse.
This is not true, either. There is a fundamental difference in pass protection when you are zone blocking as well. I'm running out to dinner right now but I'll try to explain the difference, as I understand it, when I get back. Maybe someone else can jump in, that'd certainly be appreciated. There is certainly a MUCH bigger difference in zone blocking vs man blocking in the run game, but to say that pass blocking is identical in both is not true. Okay, and it appears you're piggy backing off what MrClean said. They are not. I can promise you that. Scheduled is the main thing you should read in that. If he has no meeting why whould you say he has no scheduled meeting. Everything stays unofficial until it is annouced
I would imagine by Wed Tom Condon, Jakes agent, will already present what teams are willing to offer Jake to Ireland. Then as Jake has said, its up to us. If they have that much faith in Martin at LT ( I don't ) then we have the advantage this year of more then one pretty decent RT in FA. My concern is John Jerry. OK, I admit, he was better then Carey but honestly, that still does not mean he was good. I would draft a guard anyway because even IF he whips himself into some sort of mediocre shape, he just doesn't have the Hutspa to be an NFL starting guard. Backup ? I am fine with that but not starting.
I should also add quickly that I can understand what you're trying to say here guys, that you're likely facing the outside pass rush threat coming from your left side, but that's far from the case. Long was beat several times this season because of this very thought process. He was spun outside and the pass rusher had a free shot on his inside. That's just as likely to happen as a pass rusher shoulder dipping and getting by your outside shoulder
That really isnt true, and there is no reason a LT will be matched against the best pass rusher on a team consistantly. The way teams move around their pass rushers an elite LT isn't what it used to be by a long stretch.
The LT has the RDE in a 4-3, and the RDE or ROLB in the 3-4 man on man pass blocking 95% of the time, no matter what you call it. The outside rusher on the line. If they blitz a corner at the last second, he's going to be the responsibility of the back, because the OLinemen block inside out. The LT won't let a DE lined up over him have a free run to pick up a DB coming from farther outside.
