That's my "argument" as well. I read the first comment as a general, blanket statement that adding talent is ALWAYS a good thing...at least that's how I interpreted it. That I don't agree with. I think overpaying for talent isn't a good thing. I don't think adding a talented player to roster that doesn't fit your scheme is a good thing. That was my point about the Eagles. I'm well aware that their failures also had to do with them hiring Juan Castillo, the O-line being a mess, and neglecting the middle of their defense etc. but Nnamdi was and is a complete failure for them. That wasn't because he isn't talented. He just didn't fit that defense. What made Nnamdi so good in Oakland was that he wasn't asked to shadow the oppositions best WR or cover from the slot much. They let him stay on one side of the field and he used the sidelines like another defended. Once he was asked to cover the middle of the field by the Eagles he lost the sideline as help and with it, his effectiveness as a cover corner. In the end I think we're both in a sense "arguing" the same thing. Not sure if we weren't understanding each other completely? What bothered me was the insinuation that I didn't know what I was talking about and that my initial comment was based on a name given to that team by Vince Young and not from actually watching them. That's just not true at all.
Probably not! LOL! The point is we have a ton of picks in a draft that is not top heavy in talent but deep throughout. We should really be looking for the kill shot there. And it would be a heck of alot cheaper too!
Hmm. Interesting stat. Jared Cook ran a higher percentage of his routes from the slot than any other tight end in football in 2012. Cook ran a pass route from the slot about 76% of the time. Compare that to him being used as a pass blocker only 18 out of 377 passing snaps. I've been saying for a while now that Joe Philbin is definitely looking for a tight end that plays out wide more than he plays in line. The interesting thing about his use of Finley in Green Bay seems to be that Finley was actually used as a perimeter receiver a lot with Greg Jennings and Donald Driver playing in the slot.
If you think I accused you of dancing around comments, then you aren't reading my posts very closely. Nor am I going to get sucked into a discussion about the 2011 Eagles in a thread about Jared Cook. You don't like them. OK. You're arguing against things I never said. This is why there was talk of Jared Cook being franchise tagged as a WR. IMO, if the Dolphins sign Cook, then that should probably be interpreted as raising the white flag on Michael Egnew.
Last year he didn't have any cap room to work with, and he chose to not mortgage the future by reworking contracts to free up space to make more moves than he did.
Fair enough. Like I said in my last post I actually think in a sense that we're "arguing" the same thing and you took my Eagles comment the wrong way and agree with you about not wanting to discuss them anymore.
These things happen when you have a GM working on his second coach. Ireland wants to put up numbers and his coach would like a 3-4 year build with job security.
You sure? I read 54% in an article where Cook's people were threatening an appeal if they franchised him as a TE.
Well, that's a chance worth taking considering Hartline & Gibson likely won't be taking us to a SB. I think you'd agree that being average doesn't make anyone a contender, and that's exactly what the combination of Hartline & Gibson is IMO. So personally, between the two choices, I'd prefer to add one receiver who actually improves the talent level of the team and then draft the other who offers some upside so that the position has a chance to become better than average in talent.
I think Cook is a bit interesting from the standpoint of being an every-down guy in that he isn't as hopeless as a lot of guys as a blocker IMO. He plays most of his snaps in the slot but he isn't an obligate split guy. The 76.8% number is passing snaps only, I'd imagine the 54% is all snaps.
Youtube has a video of what looks like all of his passing targets for 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99FusIUPOEg San Diego game was not very pretty
That's the reason he never got the Franchise tag placed on him as he was filing a complaint to be tagged as a WR rather than TE.
See, I think that's what we're looking for in a TE in this offense. A pure pass-catcher. A guy who will need to assist the RT or LT in pass blocking at times. But I really think we resign Fasano to be our blocking TE.
I think they're willing to what it takes to mitigate bad blocking, but the combination of a shorter guy who can't block is in danger of losing the mismatch issues that make the position. You've got to be enough of a blocker to force the linebacker mismatches, and tall and physical enough that teams are worried about accounting with a DB.
tough to get motivated, if your OC and HC always say "we should have used him more here and there...yadadada" and then in the end, he is still on the sidelines for most of the time on sundays again
I would rather have Delanie Walker, to be honest. More balanced, can receive and block equally well. He will probably come cheaper, has experience in the playoffs, and would seem to have much better of an attitude than Jared Cook.
For one, they have to sign someone because they have to use their money and cap space to get to the cap "floor." Would you rather they spend those tens of millions on Anthony Fasano? Not me.
I'm not really big on any of the FA TEs, honestly. But, drafting a TE in round one is not a great option either (unless we traded down or traded up to get Eifert).
The thing with Walker is he can hardly catch a cold. His deal is basically being a quite good blocker and being athletic enough to be a danger on play action.
It's weird, I like some things about him as a player, but your right, he does have some fundamental issue with catching a ball.
I am warming up to the idea of Bennett, who according to rotoworld.com is still available (not re-signing with Giants immediately). Bennett is young, can block, and is fast enough to be a seam threat. And he recruited Tannehill to A&M if you believe him.
The more I think about all the UFA tight ends, I'm thinking Bennett is the best possible choice. If contract sizes are all equal.
IMO, signing Bennett to be the on the line Y, and drafting a Joker/H-Back type TE like Ertz, Reed, or Gragg, would be a good plan. It is still possible that Egnew could develop so unless we don't sign a UFA and need to draft a Y, maybe it's best to wait and take Gragg in the late 4th rather than invest an early pick in a guy to compete with Egnew. Kelce looks like the best Y option early, and IMO a late option would be Michael Williams of Alabama.
I already through this name out there once, and I am only going to "mention" again. Can't say why, but Josh Baker is a name to remember instead of your UDFA. IF I hear more that I can report, I will.....but at this point its a guy that knows a guy...... I will probably be seeing Josh in the next couple of weeks when my schedule changes....
