the man does not stretch the field, does not threaten vertically, he cannot take the top off a defense, he wins individual matchups consistently because defenses choose to not worry about him with extra attention..let him have his inordinate amount of targets, just make the tackle.

It's not even that. Strictly talking about his on-field performance.

No thanks. But, the FA CB market looks to have quite a bit of competition this year.

Numbers coming in on Dolphins' contracts to Brian Hartline and Matt Moore.

Moore with a $3.0 million signing bonus, $2.5 million first year cap number.

Hartline with a $7.0 million signing bonus plus $5.5 million guaranteed salaries in his first 2 years. Cap number in 2013 only $2.115 million.

Dolphins deferring a lot of dead money into the future in order to maintain room under the 2013 cap. They are paying Matt Moore exactly $4 million for 2013 but expensing only $2.5 million. They are paying Brian Hartline $12.5 million for 2013 & 2014 but will only be expensing $8.4 million.

This is part of why in my running totals I always consider AVERAGES for the contract life. People think these contracts are all backloaded. The SALARIES are back loaded, but the BONUSES are front loaded to offset. Brian Hartline's average contract value over the life of his 5 year deal is about $6.2 million. Coincidentally (or not), how much money will he literally be paid in 2013 & 2014? About $6.25 million per year ($7.0 million signing bonus, $5.5 million guaranteed salaries). Matt Moore's average contract value is $4.0 million. How much money will he be paid in 2013 alone, literally? $4.0 million ($3.0 million signing bonus, $1.0 million salary).

The money paid is the money paid. You can shift it using nifty accruals but it will always end up expensed, one way or another.

What I'm noping the Dolphins do here is take the money they should be expensing in 2013 but instead are shifting off to the future (total amounts to about $5.6 million) and maintain that amount of space under the 2013 salary cap that they can freely transfer into 2014. That way they're not really borrowing against their future.

Agree. Marshall when a Phin guaranteed us moving the ball and gave us yarage in big chunks. This baggage thing grinds on me. He wasn't a cancer. Harvin comes with a bigger attitude. Both very good WRs. Marshall plays more games which helps. ;-)

doesn't it help our cap structure if your averaging the bonuses in the yearly salaries?

I'm not sure what you mean.

There's no "help" or "hurt". There are just rules. Actions have consequences. The Dolphins are paying $11.715 million to Brian Hartline and Matt Moore this year. They're only expensing $4.615 million of it. As a result, they're deferring $7.1 million of money they've already paid into future years. That money is dead money. It will be on the books no matter what. You can never get rid of it. It will be expensed at some point.

If you're spreading it out over more years, that just means you're committed for longer. If Miami cuts Brian Hartline after 2 seasons, then they're on the hook for $4.2 in dead money.

This is true, but there is a small amount of calibration they can take advantage of in terms of predicting cap numbers. There is going to be a year where the cap jumps significantly, and teams likely will have a lot of extra cap space. You're likely better off pushing as much money as you can to that offseason, because you'll see a lot of overpaying then which you may not want to participate in.

Again I reiterate, that is why the most SENSIBLE thing to do when you're trying to track your cap space on the napkin is to go by salary averages...unless the contract in question is especially backloaded more than usual (usually in the case of a risky player, character, age or medical risk). Otherwise the back loaded salaries are usually just mirror reflections of the front loaded bonuses.

That's actually a myth that's been debunked. I was surprised too, trust me. I don't have a link off hand but if you try and look it up I'm sure you'll find it. Bottom line is the NFLPA was facing the prospect of having the team salary cap numbers take an extreme nose dive immediately upon signing the new CBA, compared to what the cap numbers were before...and in order to raise the 2011, 2012 and 2013 salary caps to a static level, they "borrowed" against the future. Now there is no significant increase in salary cap expected for 2014 or 2015.

I can see Hartline being a Phin long-term anyway. Its the #1 WR that are harder to keep. I'm liking what the FO are doing. Its giving us a better chance of success short term. Its great we have so many options this time of year.

Benns was cut today by Tampa Bay. Underperforming kid with size and speed. Not sure he would fit Miami offense.

Can I bring back those old arguments of me saying how Benns would never amount to anything in the NFL so I can pat myself on the back?

Kidding..Kind of.. and hell no to Benns. Hes got a lot of head issues. lapses of concentration and awful cases of the dropsies...like one of the worst in the NFL.

Yes but Mexico has daylight savings time next month, so I am wondering if you guys had daylight savings time this week and the difference is 2 hours. I heard something about daylight savings time but not sure if it is this week or what.

    Take a bow.

I think I liked him. I can't remember much of what I said about him back then but he is on my records as being on my board and my board only had about 80 to 90 names on it.

Sorry if its gone over my head, Can you explain the bonus and how it relates to the duration of the contract from the owner, does he control that number, and does that number that he gives in bonus have to be prorated or accounted for throughout the contract?

Deej, for cap hit purposes a signing bonus gets spread out over the life of a contract. So let's say I signed a 4 year, 20 million dollar contract with 8 million of that guaranteed in the signing bonus. The other 12 million is spread out in salary over 4 years as such: 1 million, 2 million, 4 million, 5 million. My cap hit for year one would only be 3 million (1 million salary + 2 million prorated portion of signing bonus). My cap hit for subsequent years would be 4 million, 6 million and 7 million. My personal take home is 9 million for year one (1 million salary + 8 million signing bonus).

Now if I suck and the team releases me after year one, the remainder of the prorated signing bonus gets kicked up to year two, so that if they release me, the team will take a 6 million salary cap hit of "dead money" (2 million + 2 million + 2 million).

Guaranteed money, whether salary or in bonuses, will always count against the cap somewhere. Hartline has his signing bonus + 2 years of guaranteed salary which will have to be accounted for.
