Olivier Vernon...dude will be great next year. We aren't adding another huge contract to our defense unless it's at the CB position. I could see us adding a 2nd tier type pass rusher via free agency but no one along the lines of Dumervil

Don't see Dumervil as a fit. He's not that big 5 technique end that Cincinnati used with Carlos Dunlap or Miami used with Jared Odrick. I don't think he's good enough in reverse to play SAM. IMO, he'd be a 3rd down pass-rusher, but a REALLY expensive one.

Xavier Rhodes would help Wake, or just solid CB play in general.

I'd take Dumervil. On 2nd, 3rd and long - we need a guy like that. With he and Wake on both sides, it would be like Freeney and Mathis. That is a huge factor in late game situations.

How many games are won/lost on 4th quarter drives? A ton. I've seen teams drive on Miami many times in late games situations.

I don't think Vernon is a "sudden-impact" pass rusher; nor is Odrick.

I think you're looking at fairly narrow styles of player on either end of it.

Replacing Odrick would be difficult, because you're looking for someone who can play basically as a 3-4 DE one snap and a edge rusher against an LT the next. They'd rather have someone who can do the former than the latter in the base packages it seems, and there aren't a lot of guys who fit the mold of both.

If you're looking for the guy who replaces Odrick in Nickel packages it is a bit easier, but then you're looking at a specific price tier. How much do you pay for a defensive end playing +/- 50% snaps? The expenditure has to fit. The guy also has to be able to play on the defense's right side, and it wouldn't hurt if he can play coverage too. Dumervil fits, I think, it's more a matter of price.

I'd rather sign Connor Barwin to take Misi's role and then trade Misi.

I'd rather draft Jarvis Jones. However, I'm not sure either Barwin or Jones can do some of the things Misi does coverage-wise.

I disagree. (on Barwin at least). Remember, he was a TE for 3 years before moving to defense, and it talked about possibly using him in the NFL as a TE?
Killed it at the combine: 4.59 forty (4.47 pro day) 1.53 10 yard. 6.87 3 cone. 4.18 shuttle. 40.5 vertical. 10'08" broad. Has been a 3-4 OLB in Houston.
16 passes broken up in 3 years (in NFL).

    Misi: 4.75 forty. 1.64 10 yard. 7.07 3 cone. 4.27 shuttle. 38 vertical. 10'07" broad. 5 passes broken up in 3 years.

Barwin would perhaps need to drop 10 pounds to get at a weight better suited for the position but IMO he's more athletic for it and with greater big play ability since he can catch, swat passes, and create more pressure.

There's more to coverage than broken up passes. Also, how many of those are him batting passes at the line? Houston's pretty adept at that as a team, not just J.J. Watt.

disagree on Rhodes making our pass rush better .... it is the pass rush that makes CB 'seem' better.

No pass rush ... i don't care how good your CBs are.

Phenominal pass rush makes average CBs look very good .... bring Avril in here -- and you'll see a phenominal pass rush for the next 3-5 years.
