Hadn't thought about that. Til the gurus weigh in, here's what your question made me think. The first thing that crossed my mind is that it was everyone's first year in a new offense, with a rookie QB and other rookies in the lineup too, so you were going to see a very limited amount of creativity out of the play calling. Vanilla.

In year two, I'd expect to see more. Perhaps that would include more varied use of players, like RBs shifting to the slot.

Technically, though, Austin would be playing as a straight-up slot receiver like Bess did when he was in the slot. Probably more screens than Bess saw though.

So when are we given any type of hints about this player, Con? I've heard I should trust you from people that I trust, but I'm not very patient! :P

Starting RT, TE, and CB locked up in FA.

Trade back our 1st for an extra 3rd. Trade up 2a w/o using the extra 3rd. Perhaps use Bess or a future pick.
    1. WR- Tavon Austin
    2. DT- Johnathan Hankins
    2. CB- Jordan Poyer
    3. FS- Bacarri Rambo
    3. OG- Brian Schwenke
    3. DE- Cornellius Washington
    * 4 and beyond will be about total value so we're looking for talented players whom we expect to go higher but slide by happenstance.
    4. RB- Andre Ellington
    4. CB- Tryann Mathieu
    5. TE- Chris Gragg
    7. K- Dustin Hopkins/Caleb Sturgis/Brett Maher/Brett Baer
    7. WR- Uzoma Nwachukwu

So, I ask myself what would qualify as a surprise with this draft:

    1) trading UP for a player
    2) trading the 12th pick for a current NFL starter
    3) taking a player we would not expect at that pick

    1) Trading up, but continuing the new trend of risking players with big upside, getting Dion Jordan or Ezekiel Ansah at pick 5.
    2) no clue who, but I'll guess a DE like Johnson (as per CK's supposition) or TE Jason Witten (that would certainly drop my jaw)
    3) Chance Warmack fits here, as a mild surprise, but it doesn't have the BIG surprise factor that the rumors hint at. Perhaps ANOTHER LB is added in Alec Ogletree. I would be most pleasantly surprised at 12 by Jarvis Jones.

That looks like a dream draft. Only changes I'd make would be the safety being DJ Swearinger, his Clemson game aside. The way he hits, send him in on a few blitzes of Brady and lay a shoulder into Brady's rib cage a few times. Soften him a little. The last 7 I'd take a QB and I like Ryan Griffin, Tulane in that regard.

Heck to the no, McPappy. Not putting a Gamecock in my mock who flexes after targeting one of my Clemson boys. Not happening.ever.
I'd rather watch him play in traffic than in Miami. :p

I guess he could help our defensive front if he covers extremely well. :shifty:

It's gotta be Anthony Spencer who was a FA at one point whom no one was talking about, but then was tagged.
He helps our defensive front and would have to now be acquired via trade.
....... and with the work Ireland is doing refacing the linebacking corps, Spencer would make sense as an upgrade over Misi.
Plus Ireland drafted him in 2007. It all fits.

I'd have to say extend Jeff Ireland if he pulled off Sam Shield with one of the 2nds. It would basically mean we traded Vontae for Shields and paid the man we really wanted. Get younger at 2 LB spots for virtually the same money...score a TD producer and Sam Shields.....that'd be balls man.

PURE guess. I e-mailed my buddy but I didn't get a reply back. I totally thought it was "defense" and not "defensive front".

Well **** now I just don't know. We have tried to trade with Green Bay earlier this year, so I had them. We didn't really try to trade with Dallas, so that knocks them out.

He could, ya know, tell us.

    Just a few points:

    • Dee Milliner isn’t making 12. Dee Milliner almost certainly isn’t making 6. If he gets past 3 I’ll raise an eyebrow.

    • The corner that Miami apparently like the most is Xavier Rhodes and for obvious reasons. But if they are getting rid of Sean Smith who is best suited as a press cornerback, then Xavier Rhodes, who presses as well as anyone in the draft seems a little more unlikely, especially with Keith’s notion that we will play more quarters coverage and more zone. That brings Desmond Trufant, especially Leon McFadden, Jamar Taylor who I really like, Jordan Poyer and Johnthan Banks who is an absolute ball hawk and the sort of player they’ll like because of his ability to make plays.

    • I still think we’re in play for Jake Long but they’ve been scouting an awful lot of tackles. I’ll be surprised if Lane Johnson, Eric Fisher or Joeckel fall to 12. Very surprised. But we’ve been working out amongst others Xavier Nixon, Menelik Watson and the kid at Alabama Pine Bluf, Terron Armstead.

    • Miami got younger and they got better yesterday. I agree with Pete Prisco. They added speed to the slowest offense in football and whilst people question Mike Wallace last season, Prisco again is right; he was hampered by what Todd Haley did with him. Play to his strengths. I love Percy Harvin but look at the numbers from contract to games played to yards after the catch to touchdowns scored to games missed to picks given up. We win everywhere. And we win at linebacker with young, fast, hungry players who can run the scheme that the coaches want better than the guys who were there, one of whom was considered something of a recalcitrant.

    • We still have somewhere in the region of $20 million although that could be more because there’s some confusion about the rookie pool – is it $3.5 million as Ben Volin has claimed or $6 million as others have said?

    • Richard Marshall, Dimitri Patterson, Dan Carpenter and Davone Bess all carry large cap numbers and could get whacked, freeing up more money. They like Brandon Gibson. All of a sudden they have Hartline as Jordy Nelson, Wallace as a young Greg Jennings……is Gibson James Jones?

    • TE needs to be filled. Jared Cook would have been nice but don’t be fooled; he’s been inconsistent and his contract is ridiculous. To me, Dustin Keller makes a lot more sense. More touchdowns, more catches, better blocker and the QB situation has been horrific in New York as we know. Plus he’ll come significantly cheaper. They’ll certainly look to upgrade that area within those first five picks. And don’t sleep on Michael Egnew either. If you’re looking for a flex tight end, then here we go.

    Could see it coming.

As for Cb at #12, Rex Ryan once said a "good zone Cb in the draft is just a guy who could not play man to man in college, and if cannot play man in college, he probably can't play man in the NFL".

That sticks with me, anyway we go, we have to take the chance that a good man Cb can change to play Zone well.

And suspect Bess is going nowhere, he works fairly cheaply for a starting Wr who is fairly good at what he does.

Final year of his contract. Trade bait....and a newly signed guy can play cheaper for the year with the usual cap games.

That they are still in pursuit of Brandon Gibson (not big on this - but I've been wrong many times before) leads me to believe they are looking elsewhere beside WR in the 1st two rounds of the draft; if they can do something about it. One factor is that WR does take some time to develop (though Austin's all around talents would make him a unique player).

They seem to want to go young and Keller has a bit of mileage (6 yrs; will turn 29 in September) and some injuries that hobbled him. But, I like that given the need. And I'd still like them to pursue another TE in the draft. But, they may feel comfortable with the guys there if they signed Keller.

Boomer - do you think they might be looking to pull a trade up from 12 to grab one of the OTs (Esp. if they landed both Keller and Gibson)?

I think Brandon Gibson makes a poor James Jones specifically because he's a weak, soft player after the catch. That's the opposite of James Jones. Brandon Gibson is a poor man's Brian Hartline and I'm not sure why they're interested in him now that they have both Hartline and Wallace.

IMO those wr's after Patterson, Austin and Keenan Allen are tightly grouped and its going to vary from person to person how theyre ranked. Personally, I like Terrence Williams and Stedman Bailey above everyone in this draft at the WR except patterson who I have as my 1A to Williams being 1B as the best wr in this draft.

Plus if you think adding just Wallace (and maybe Keller) to Hartline and Bess is good enough I'd really question that. Ireland himself said he vastly underestimated the need for playmakers and I dont think hes stopping at Wallace and maybe Keller. I suspect we go after AT LEAST 1 more early potentially 2 if we dont sign Keller or some other FA TE

Gibson apparently is in play if he leaves New York. People talk about trading or cutting Bess if they sign Gibson. He is not a Bess type. He is, as CK referred to, a Hartline type of player. But after yesterday's surprises on defense, I am of the opinion anything goes right now. It is apparent last year was an evaluation year and the coaching staff didn't like what they saw a lot.

I have a feeling that when it all shakes out, that Trufant will be the 2nd corner taken in the draft, and if Miami goes corner in the 1st it will be him.

I think a playmaking TE is of tantamount importance to the way we want this offense to run. I would not be surprised at all to see an early pick spent on Eifert.

I think Banks is perfect for this team, but his value falls awkwardly for our picks. He is in the 18-40th pick range.

With the current rookie salary cap there seems to be a lot more movement in the draft. I have a feeling we will be trading both up and down in spots to hit our picks. Our number of picks affords us opportunities for movement and I think a lot of guys we may target are in places where we can move and snag them like banks.

Someone sell me on Stedman Bailey. I don't mind short, I don't mind slow, I don't like short and slow. I understand speed and height can be overcome, but it's hard man, real hard.

I've heard comparisons to Ike Hilliard (who is a little bigger). But the NFL is so much faster now.

Add Austin to Wallace, Lamar and maybe Keller? That is a significant overall upgrade from last year. Hartline wouldn't be a slouch in that bunch either, probably drop Bess if we get Austin (and Gibson). I think there are still lots of directions we can go with the draft though. Additional pre-draft moves may help shape it out, but I think adding speed is always a good bet. Speed and big plays really helped many of the playoff teams, that seems to be the direction the NFL wants the game to go.

Wes Welker is short and slow and he's done OK for himself. Bailey has about the same speed as Victor Cruz -- he's not super slow. Of course, Welker and Cruz went undrafted. I am not a huge Bailey fan and wouldn't use a high pick on him, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he is successful in the NFL.

He'll be the best WR from this draft class.

Multiply Steve Smith by Hines Ward...the product will be Stedman Bailey.

This was posted by BuckeyeKing in the draft forum: link

You'll see he's virtually the best receiver statistically in this draft.

He's also from Miami, could see Sun Life from his home and high school and grew up a Dolphin fan.

I think he's one of the best WRs in this draft. The closest comparison is our Mark Clayton. Quick in and out of his cuts, plays fast, good routes, great hands. He is very much like Carolina's Steve Smith with the ball in the air. I prefer him in the second over any other WR in the draft.
