He is a 4-5 million dollar CB, so when he gets off his high horse and wants to be realistic sure he can be 2nd CB....behind Xavier Rhodes....

Still think somebody overpays for him though...

David Canter convinced Smith that he's worth a big money deal, and then the market became flooded with CBs.

I don't want Sean Smith back. He should play in a man press scheme. We traded the wrong CB, IMO.

Well, we know what he can and can't do...his problem is consistency...sometimes, he's just not on the field. I think Coyle has spoken to Irish about not only taking him back at a level that is commensurate with is ability...he's definitely a second tier CB.

However, at some point intime, we'll have to add some DBs....Personally, I think the only reason Patterson is still on the roster is that we don't HAVE to cut him yet and he's at least a body, although I didn't see him do much last year...

There are lots of guys out there right now...it'll be fun to see how it shakes out...

Yes, he's a #2 CB. The problem is that Canter is looking for a high end #2 CB contract.

Patterson is on the roster because he's the slot corner. The #3. Sean Smith does not affect Dmitri Patterson at all.

It's interesting to me that both Smith and Long had quiet days yesterday. The market was expected to be soft at both CB and T.

I'm not a huge fan of Smith, but still has great size and matches up well against the TEs in our division. It wouldn't be the worst thing to get him back at a reduced cost, especially if this whole ordeal helps put his ego in check.

I'd MUCH rather see us resign Long (at a reasonable cost of course) as opposed to resigning Smith. At least with Long, we have some assurance that he can play at a very high level (when healthy). Can't really say the same for Smith.

    JMHO.

Amazing how much love SS24 was getting after VD was let go. And now that it looks like he'll walk, he's instantly labeled as garbage.

I think it's a little unfair to say that Smith is "crawling back". You can't blame him for wanting to earn more money.......I'm sure I'd rather turn down lots of money to stay on the same contract said no-one, ever.

With Coyle as defensive coordinator, I'm happy to let Ireland defer to him on Smith. While the defensive backfield played better as a unit and Reshad Jones became a star, Smith regressed. And more importantly he regressed in a contract year.

It is clear Ireland/Coyle/Philbin would like him back, but not at all for what he is asking.

That has a lot to do with how Smith stepped up (or more accurately didn't step up) after VD was traded. Most of us, myself included, expected him to take the next step and finally start to fulfill his potential. Obviously we know how that turned out.

I don't think I would want a CB back if he's just coming back and not happy with his contract. That sets up nicely for him not trying as hard as he should on plays. It already looks like he doesn't give 100% all the time now.

In all fairness, I think a lot of people were expecting SS to turn the corner and mature into a top-tier corner. I was one of those people. It just never happened. So, I don't think anyone was 'in love' with Smith after the Vontae trade so much as they were enamored with his potential (and, as fans, justifying the VT trade to themselves). Personally, I don't think Smith is garbage. However, it does irk me a little that he's out chasing this big-money deal after coming up short of actually earning it. I just hate seeing guys with so much potential fall short because of a lack of maturity.

The biggest problem with SS24 was his extremes.

He didn't make many big plays, come up with many turnovers. He did give up a lot of TD's and get beat a lot.

He would have a really good game with a few pass break-ups, but would also give up that TD we needed to prevent and drop that INT he should have had.

I'm thinking though after that tweet about how nice it would be to play for a team that will let you play your style or whatever he said, I think he's gone.

I would have preferred to keep the CB under contract for 2013, which was Vontae. Now we have 0 starting CBs. Big hole.

I think the feeling is that Sean Smith has never been a real heart-based, team comes first dude. You never hear things that make you think about Zach Thomas-like desire to stay in Miami.

In fact, you more get the sense, through things like Vontae leaking conversations with Sean, and other whispers, that Sean was looking forward to moving on out of here and gettin' paid ellsewhere.

Meanwhile, other players seemed to *want* to stay, if only Miami were willing to pay them. (See Long, Hartline, Starks, etc... especially the latter two talking about hometown discounts etc.. something I have NEVER once heard associated with Smith via ANY report)

So yes, all the players want more money, but some seemed to sincerely hope Miami would pay that money so they could stay, while Sean Smith never seemed to have that sentiment.

Bottom line: no one grudges a player for seeking money, but fans DO care if a player cares about our team and will dislike him if it appears that he doesn't love the Dolphins or want to make an effort to stay here.

The latter is how Sean Smith comes across, whether it's fact or not.

I would take Sean Smith back. Why wouldn't you? He's a good player. Inconsistent technique but let's face it even after four years in the league he's still only been playing the position six years.

He didn't play badly, but he didn't make the step to a top tier guy. He did manage to cover some amazing #1's. But he had some bad games here and there. Most importantly, he still doesn't have a knack for getting any turnovers.

In the plus department, I was impressed by his improved tackling.

Me too. You obviously still want to use a pick on a CB in the top two rounds IMO but if Sean Smith is your #2 CB, then that's not a bad situation.

Having Smith back wouldn't be the worst thing for us, particularly now since we don't really have anyone else to hang our hats on at CB. Marshall may be ok, but we haven't seen him play in 6 months. Patterson is very limited in what he can do and is probably Irish's next "cut" guy to manage the cap (just a guess, no particular reason other than he'd be 'cheap' to cut). I'm not advocating we bring Smith back because we have nothing else....well, maybe I am, but to me, Smith has shown his limits. He is what he is and if we sign him back, we'll all have to accept that...

No - I don't think anyone is garbage - misused, not suited for that role, perhaps even insufficient for the situation, yes - garbage, no. But, what began to happen when we persistently saw him 5 yards off of the receiver as the catch was being made was a deep examination of whether or not he is worth the salary he is being paid. My answer is 'No!."
