I'd cut Marshall and not think twice.

If we cut Marshall and Patterson, we have absolutely no one to play outside. No one.

We didn't step up in the first hours of FA to sign a top CB so my guess is that we're keeping at least one of those guys. And my guess would be Marshall.

Marshall is your slot guy, Patterson is your perimeter guy. Chris Houston can fill that role nicely if they decide to lock him up instead, but it depends how much they like him.

He's more of a press man cover corner, not zone.

Ritchie Incognto. Would save $4.3m in cap space- Am I the only one on this forum that likes him? The guy is a thug and a bully. He's dirty as hell and there is nothing anyone can do about it yo! He's a nasty O lineman and we need to keep him. 4 mil is worth that.

Richard Marshall. Cap savings of $3.43m- Skilled enough that we should probably keep him around for another year. I think he was playing injured last year. I'd be willing to give him another look. Let him be part of that cornerback situation that has to work itself out soon.

Dmitri Patterson. Cap savings of $4.6m- He's really the only one on this list that makes sense. If he can take a pay cut i'd like to keep him and give him an opportunity here.

Davone Bess. Cap savings of $2.68m- Hell no! You can't trade the toughest hardest working player on this team. He's also our best football player.

Paul Soliai. Cap savings of $6.3m- Again hell no! We just re-upped with this dude and when he's on his game he's probably the best in the game at stopping the run.

Dan Carpenter. Cap savings of $2.7m- We have been through a lot with this guy. I'm down to keep him.

i don't think we cut either Marshall or Patterson until some one is signed to replace them -- just like they did with Burnett and Dansby.

don't throw away what you have until it is replaced.

Seriously ?? The main difference is that Welker is faster, is more durable, can actually return punts/kos (as opposed to falling down when the first guy puts a hand on him) and is quicker. Bess is a nice role player, I'm not in the 'cut-Bess' crowd, but he's no where close to WW...

Why? Bess is a better receiver and will make 1/2 the money....and his wife isn't a ditzy beyotch!

WW would re-sign with NE before coming here and I don't want to pay him the money he's looking for...he's not worth it to us, it'd be cheaper to keep Bess for that purpose, they are similar players, although WW is clearly better. No word as to what he's looking for, but it's a bet its more than $2.7m.

It'll be interesting to see what Irish does for DBs...We have no corners, to speak of right now, and CC re-signed, but that position needs an upgrade....

We need an OT...who is our RT and who is our backup OTs ??

We need a TE...obviously Clay and Egnew aren't the answer...I do hear rumblings that Keller is coming down for a visit...Is Brandon Myers an option ?? Got to get someone whether or not we draft a TE in the 1st or 2nd...

I think you have to fill the holes with some semblance of players before you go into the draft...

They cant cut Incognito, the left side with Martin is uncertain, and that shiny new speedster needs time to get open.....

How Marshall still has a job is beyond me, at the very least he should restructure. Bess as well he is getting paid too much, I kow he is a fan favorite around here, but the numbers dont add up...

Dont believe that, and would you want him for say 4-5? When the market comes down on him? I really dont think NE wants him at all...

I the only one that currently is on real thin ice is Carpenter. He is good, but not worth his current salary. Now maybe they approach him to restructure.... Otherwise, I bet they either sign someone or draft someone late.

Patterson is interesting just bc his salary is also relatively high. Probably is we are just too thin at that position right now.

Bess is probably either trade bait or going to play out his last year on the contract and then leave. Just from what I read he does not really fit what Philbin likes in his wrs.

I think it's hard for them to cut Incognito unless they're doing a similar replacement deal like with Burnett/Dansby. He played pretty well the second half of the season.

We still have plenty of cap room, I don't know why anyone else needs to be gut yet. Let's have some competition at camp first.

Miami absolutely needs to bring in somebody to challenge Carpenter this year. I would be shocked if we didn't.

Incognito's fit in the zone blocking scheme is not a great one, but he did make the pro bowl. However, I do expect he and Jerry are short on days when appropriate replacements are found.

If you follow the analysis that was done on the linebacker crew, it makes sense that analysis would be done across the board. A part of that analysis on the OL is that a move of Martin to left tackle will be permanent. That generally leaves Long to sign elsewhere. Now a right tackle has to be signed. You are asking a lot of Yeatman to put him right in right now. Probably a Winston type. The guards are not zone blocking dudes. You likely will draft replacements there, but would you cut Incognito and Jerry this year? Doubtful, because there aren't a lot of options in free agnency. The cornerback situation is the most fluid. I have to believe Miami signs two starters in free agency and drafts guys to groom. I believe Patterson and Marshall are likely gone, at least one of them. And yes, Carpenter should be on shaky ground, especially at his salary.

IMO, it's the other way around. Ireland thinks he has a #2 corner at a reasonable cost in Marshall and after signing him just last year, I'd doubt he gets replaced after just one injury marred season. Patterson is a decent nickel, though maybe they think they can find a better nickel for less money.

Last person they are going to cut on this football team outside of Tannehill is Richie Incognito. I Thank the Good Lord nobody on this board runs an NFL football team.

That would leave us with a LT ( right now ) in Martin thats really not that great, a great center, a Right Guard who resembles the Pillsbury Doghboy and no Right tackle. Yep, that sounds like a great plan LMAO

Call me crazy, but I think we end up drafting Austin or Swope depending on how the board falls out. I love Bess, don't get me wrong, but we have two guys in this draft who were incredibly productive, blindingly fast, and are perfect fits for the slot. If we go for Austin, I have to believe we dangle Bess to the Patriots and make them squeal for the **** they pulled before the Welker trade. I think Swope is probably more likely, though.

Bess sucks? False. Welker is more durable? I would not go that far. Keep in mind I said that Bess has a similar skillset to Welker; not that Bess is a FHOF, better, etc. Nevertheless, I think he is a fine player and here is why:

First, each of the two players has missed 3 games in their entire career, with Bess missing his first three games last year. Welker has played 3 more years, so if you want to argue he is more durable based on being in the league longer...fine.

    Welker averages the following:
    1072 yards per season
    4.75 touchdowns per season
    11.2 yards per reception
Catches .71% of balls thrown his way

    Bess averages the following:
    689.4 yards per season
    2.4 touchdowns per season
    10.7 yards per catch
Catches .64% of the balls thrown his way

Keep in mind, Bess is 27 to Welker's 31. Bess has not been in a pass oriented offense throughout his career (do not dare say Henning or Sparano were pass oriented), less than stellar coaches calling plays (putting that lightly), and less than stellar players (putting that lightly) throwing the ball to him compared to what Welker has seen in NE with a more pass oriented offense, fairly decent play calling, and a future HOF quarterback.

Where the numbers really shed light is the averages. 10.7 and 11.2 yards per catch respectively is not too far off.

In terms of whether or not Bess sucks, I disagree. Most NFL WRs catch on average about 55%-57%. .64% and .71% is fantastic considering most NFL Wide Receivers/Tight Ends average around 55%-57% of catches:targets.

    Some examples of that ratio:
    Calvin Johnson: .54%
    Andre Johnson: .64%
Brandon Stokeley: .60% (do not have his BAL/IND years :/)

If you can think of other great slot receivers then I will gladly crunch the #s, but I can assure you Bess will be up there. He does not suck, he has been in a less than stellar situation from a coaching/QB perspective, and is much younger than Welker. I foresee a big season from Bess with it being a contract year and Wallace taking one of the two peeps that constantly covered him last year off of him yielding 1on1s.

Lastly, speed wise I have seen some reports of Welker running a 4.55 40, but most say 4.65. I have seen Bess' 40 at 4.64 and one report from combine having him run a 4.7. To say one is faster than the other with the available data is...pushing it.

Nah, Welker is just a Master 1st Class at running routes. Plus, the Patriots ask Welker to get downfield a lot more than the Phins ask Bess to.

In the end, what you want out of a slot receiver is 1) great route running ability and 2) soft hands. Speed is just a bonus. Welker may look quicker on film, but I do recall not too long ago that season Bess was having where a majority of his catches were for converted first downs and the comparisons were rife. I do not think Bess slow by any stretch of the imagination and in the end surely not worth cutting. Trading him would be another story if a replacement was found or the offer was too good to be true.
