I have heard of talk around here that the Cowboys will be doing this with a few of their players (Doug Free in particular). I believe then it doesn't hit nearly as bad against the Salary Cap.....

    Well away from here
It could allow us to roll that same money into next year's cap as we did last year heading into this year.

It just means the money saved by cutting them won't be fully available until June 1st.

I do understand that...but why do it that way?? Why not keep as much money as possible available now?

I believe it allows Miami to split the cap hit between this year and next year for the dead money.

Well, often the contracts are such that, IF you terminate it early, you get an extra cap hit. Some of the money that you don't pay counts against your cap. The deadline for that is June onthe. IF we cut them now, we would have less money to play with right now.....

Ties them a bit now but we are carrying some players who can be cut or renegotiated if we need the cap relief immediately. I hope Richard Marshall is renting.

Because they shouldn't really be spending all that money now, and have the space to make moves and also get delayed gratification on moves.

No big deal. Most of the rookies picked up in the draft do not sign until after June 1st these days, Its a wash

I thought so too, but that might be something that went away with the new CBA. I'll have to research that.

    just from the article though:

It's not a "huge" deal. Because whenever we look at their current cap space, we always think, they need to keep a set amount to sign their drafted players anyway come June/July. This just reserves that $10.4 mill in cap space for when we need it in June/July. We're going to have to sign our draft picks anyway (we have more picks than normal). So just think of it as setting aside that cap space already. We probably won't need that much to sign our rookies, but hopefully this makes it easier to understand.

This might help prove the point ive been trying to make. We're not going all in, or trying to save a gms job.... We're rebuilding a roster. The idea was never to spend every last dime in this free agency. Splitting the hit sure does sound nice as well. And maybe we see that r.jones extension.

    Going by that article

I would take that to mean that future prorated portions of the signing bonus count against the 2014 cap.

If memory serves me right, there was a change so teams can release veterans earlier while still getting the cap benefits of releasing on June 1st.

Before the rule, Miami would have to wait till June 1st, Dansby and Burnett would have to wait until June 1st to look for a job because Miami can't release them from their contract yet.
