Split the difference and go with Keenan Allen.

So the difference between Austin and Patterson is someone who is slower than both, smaller than Patterson, but much more polished.

I'd take the guy with the insane ceiling. Dez Bryant level ceiling. I'm going Patterson.

I say crazy because based on previous Irelend drafts, I just don't see us grabbing a slot receiver at #12 overall.

Dolphins just invested big money to 2 outside guys, will he spend more for a inside only guy.

We let our LT walk with questionable replacements, but there will be some nice linemen at the top.

I think Irelend deep down knows another Linemen or pass rusher will help the team more than Bess's replacement.

    Ted Ginn Jr's ghost?

I think research has shown that guys that size really aren't any more susceptible to getting injured than larger players. A good part of the reason is that defensive players often have a hard time getting a solid hit on them.

did you completely forget about hartline who we just resigned? Did you forget about the other receivers on this same team? Why blow the 12th overall on our 2nd or probably third receiver? Why not on a stud DT because tell me there is talent there like a star or Floyd or Richardson in the 3 or 4. We are more then likely losing both next year. Honestly you think it's undeserving to draft a DB in the first even if its for mostly zone cover? But it's more reasonable to draft the oh so impressive Austin who everyone only recently started jerking off to? Some people are just ****ing blind. Yes btw I was someone who wasn't a believer in tannehill, but I didn't ever disregard the need for a QB but read more of my posts I openly said I was wrong about 17.

Oh and also I haven't posted too much around here lately, so I'm very sorry if I offended you and got your vagina bleeding all over the floor. I would say I offered other options to think about so calling me an inside the box thinker isn't exactly correct. And wow why the need to get all defensive, I'm sorry that my opinion on Miami dolphins draft strategy isn't good enough for you sir. Next time on an open forum I will keep my comments to myself.

Hartline and Austin aren't the same players. Did you forget about Odrick? There shouldn't be a problem keeping one or both of the DT's next year. The question in my mind is Austin enough of an upgrade over Bess to justify a 12th overall pick? I'm not so sure. Bess can get open, which is still the primary job for that role. I guess it depends upon who is there at 12.

What has helped at Green Bay has been having several receivers that can make plays short and deep and keeps the defense from keying on one player. That's the value of a WR at 12 and Austin is tempting because he could immediately come in as a slot WR and would be a big play talent; as well as a PR/KR. The more weapons and the more versatility makes Tannehill that much better.

But, that is a risk factor more long term to go with him as a pick at #12. I don't think there is any way Ireland goes that route.

The other thing that kind of keeps me on my toes with the draft is that I don't believe the front office guys look at any of these mock drafts or Kiper, or McShay, or Mayock. They may, but that doesn't necessarily set their boards. Some of us when we talk about value are playing armchair personnel dudes. Every team sets their own value board and just because Kiper or who else says a guy should be drafted at yeah point, doesn't mean their boards reflect that. Just watching CK's frustration with the Dolphin front office verfies that to me. Who he values at what point is who he values. Who Ireland values at 12 may be entirely different. Austin may be a top 10 talent on several boards, as well as Eifert.

With the possibility of Ellerbe moving to strong side LB, I wouldn't discount Miami going defense at #12. I'm thinking Alex Ogletree, to play MLB.

The thinking that Mike Wallace and Tavon Austin are similar players because they are fast is absurd. Austin has unparallelled vision in the open field and very likely could turn out to be the best slot receiver in the NFL.

Another lineman wouldn't be considered something "wild" as far as draft plans go. What we are doing here is going on Jeff Darlington's insinuation that he's heard some preliminary draft talk out of Miami, and if the Dolphins do what he is hearing about, it is going to be wild.

Now, what could be wilder than pairing up Tavon Austin with Mike Wallace? Immediately, two thoughts pop into my mind. For one, why would they take a receiver after spending so much on Mike Wallace? I see that angle. However, the other thought that pops into my mind is this. Holy ****, that is a lot of speed!! I think when you combine that with the potential interest in Giovanni Bernard to pair with Lamar Miller, and quite possibly the interest in a receiving threat tight end like Gavin Escobar, and you could see WILD in the Dolphins offense.

Plus, if you draft Tavon Austin, you are doing it because you think he will be a major part of your offense, and you also think that he will transition to being an X receiver down the road.

They couldn't be more different. Mike Wallace can't sniff Tavon Austin's shoes as far as change of direction ability or route running ability goes. Mike Wallace is a straight line athlete. Tavon Austin is a jitter bug with Mike Wallace speed. Tavon Austin is a slightly smaller, faster version of Percy Harvin/Randall Cobb if he meets his potential.

It will be more clear the route the Dolphins will go in the draft after free agency. With rumors that the Dolphins are close to signing Dustin Keller and fighting with the Rams for Jake Long it is unclear what the teams' needs will be come April. They sign both Keller and Long and the only GLARING need is cornerback. The people I could see the Dolphins looking hard at when it comes to pick 12 are....

*Tavon Austin-Jeff Ireland is looking at speed to create an explosive offense in Miami. The key to the offseason has been finding weapons for Ryan Tannehill and Austin defines the term "weapon".

*Xavier Rhodes-Dolphins have a need for a true #1 cornerback and the physical specimin out of Florida State should have their full attention.

*Desmond Trufant- I echo the Dolphins need for a shut-down corner and see Trufant as one of the biggest risers come draft day

*Jonathan Cooper-Jeff Ireland has shown he wants to get younger by releasing Dansby/Burnett in favor of Wheeler/Ellerbe and could do the same when it comes to the left guard position. The team would save $4.3 million against the cap should they release Richie Incognito and Cooper is a far better player that fits the Dolphins system well.

*Arthur Brown-It looks like Ellerbe and Wheeler are playing outside so the Dolphins need someone to play the middle. Misi is the guy now but I could see them using Misi in a "Swiss army knife" role meaning that they line him up at different positions and ask him to different things. Arthur Brown is the real deal!

*Bjoern Werner-The Dolphins will have Odrick and Vernon opposite of Cameron Wake but Werner is an every down player that would present absolute great value at 12.

I don't disagree with that strategy but it doesn't strike me as a Irelend/Philbin type move.

I wouldn't be mad with Irelend taking Austin and going that route, but seems to me the Lane Johnson, Alec Olgetree, Bojoern Werner routes seem much more plausible.

I would kill for Olgetree at #12, he is a beast, could make up for missing Patrick Willis. I am just saying.

I think the 2nd and 3rd round will have plenty or WR value also.

No offense, but this drives me crazy.

What frame of reference do you have for saying something is plausible or not in regards to Ireland and the draft? There is no discernible pattern or tendency in the past 5 of his drafts for you to decide what is or is not plausible.

I don't think there' is inherently big issues with spending a lot of resources on a slot receiver. You're making a commitment to running a specific personnel package heavily, but a 11 package is basically the predominant grouping in the NFL now anyway.

I think at a certain point, you've got to start making decisions on what your offense is going to do and your resource allocation. If you pick up Dustin Keller, you can still go in whatever direction you want for your 5th skill position player(#3 WR or #2 TE), but if you're spending a first round pick on Tavon Austin or one of the tight ends high, that's what you are doing, and adding additional pass catchers after that point is going to have diminishing returns for the resources.

There's also question if you aren't better off getting what are essentially your potential "100%" starting guys(RB, TE, WRx2) and organically growing into what else you do instead of dropping loads of resources and forcing the issue. Draft or sign "lower" tier guys and try and develop them, and being an offense that is more multiple in terms of package.

Since Ted Ginn Jr. the Dolphins haven't exactly mixed it up with the 1st couple of picks. I am not saying the braintrust wouldn't do a move like Austin at 12, but seems to me based on previous drafts Irelend will try to fill in holes with top picks, and gamble with his later picks. Maybe I am looking at these last couple of drafts differently than others because I am getting a bunch of flack for this. Pat White may have been the most wildcard they have went in round 1,2.

Truth is, if you base it on their history, signing Mike Wallace wasn't an Ireland/Philbin move either.

No, you're argument makes no sense.

Since Ireland has been here the first round has seen us take a OT, CB, QB, C, DE and in the second they've taken 2 QBs, DE, LB, RB, OT, CB. There is no pattern. Not all of those were needs. Hell, he's even taken a CB at 1 and 2 in the same year.

As much as I would like to see us get Austin in the first, I also can see us taking a guard there. We need to shore up our OL bigtime so Tanny will have time to find the open guy. A healthy Jake Long would be great but we still need to fix the guards on both sides........unless what we have will fit the schemes of what we WANT to run.

No clue. I'm fairly certain we won't be drafting a QB, P, K at number 1.
I honestly have no idea. I'd love to see Jarvis Jones make it to us, then take Stedman Bailey in the 2nd. But I could get behind taking Austin at 1.

I am just saying to me that seems like the more likely route. I could be wrong. I would be much more surprised if we went for a luxury, rather than a need at #12.

IMO, they may be looking at needs more from a conceptual basis than a need basis. The fact is, there probably isn't a cornerback that is really worthy of taking that high. Maybe Xavier Rhodes, but he might have two things working against him. One, I think Miami is going to move to more of a zone based coverage scheme this year, and Rhodes is more of a press man cover guy similar to Sean Smith. Smith really struggled when Miami played zone last year, and it was an issue because no other corner on Miami could press like Smith could. Conceivably, I could see them possibily bringing Smith back and adding Rhodes, subsequently doing a lot of press and press bail into a cover 4.

Conceptually though, the team needs to improve the overall speed of the team.

Oh, the other thing Rhodes may have working against him is that I've heard some reports that he didn't interview well at the combine.

If they think Austin makes there offense better at slot, then they think there's a hole at the slot position, because Bess and Austin are nowhere near the same player. Austin is not a better version of Bess.

I think Ireland has shifted a bit with Wallace but that seems to be because he got burned on being conservative last year. That doesn't mean that he is going crazy. Conservative people (as Ireland is in the draft and free agency - I think its his personality) only go outside of that box when they feel pressured or that something didn't work. But, they usually only do so on a limited basis.

I would be very surprised at Austin at #12. I would like him there (or a bit later in a trade down - to 16-18). Though some teams may take a run at him (like Minnesota).

Personally - anything other than an Austin or one of the guards (I like Cooper a bit over Warmack because of his mobility - and seems to fit better as Keith noted in another thread) - at #12 and I think I'd be a bit disappointed.

I would be a bit nervous about one of the DBs and I don't think any of the DEs are worthy of that (though some love Werner ... I'm not sold on his ability to be a Jared Allen type at this point - which is what you want at that slot).

I don't think that is the case. Yes, he did misjudge the market last season and a couple of his plans didn't go through, however I do believe a lot of his plan for last year was to prepare for this year. He spent most of the offseason clearing out salary cap.

I have seen proof that Ireland working for Parcells is conservative. I haven't seen much that Ireland working without Parcells is conservative. He might be cautious. I would argue that the only conservative pick in last years draft was Martin.

I got Keenan Allen over Patterson..5th on my board for the first pick.

A trade down scenario is very possible with the guys that I would have targeted, people are sleeping on Austin and Eifert in the top 15, even though eventually they will be worth every bit.. that's how you win in the draft.
