Now this I can somewhat get on board with, but my issue is, between Keller, Egnew, and Clay, there is no real blocking talent. That's the biggest reason the Fasano loss hurts, as much as he sucked as a receiving threat. IMO, if we bring in Keller, we almost have to replace Egnew or Clay with a capable blocker.
Clearly it wasn't because, you've responded to it like 5 times. You're a mighty fine hypocrite. ...but as long as you're conceding that a crackhead that never caught passes until he was like 22 was better than Egnew, we're good.
I never said my posts weren't a waste of my time. Matt Jones wasn't as good of a tight end as Egnew, since Matt Jones retired instead of playing tight end. Plus Egnew isn't a crackhead, so him retiring to smoke crack has a small chance of happening.
Now you're taking tangential arguments. Are you sure you're not trolling here? So far, I've said: 1) Matt Jones was better than Egnew has been 2) Matt Jones had a brighter future after his first year than Egnew after his Neither of those are false, yet you've now made 5 posts about them....saying nothing. If you're knowingly wasting your own time, then PM me, otherwise you're consciously spamming. I, for one, feel like I have an apt and relevant comparison.
The by far main reason Matt Jones isn't in the NFL today is cocaine, not because he wasn't able to convert to TE.
And keep in mind that Philbin collects TEs like I collect empty beer cans on Saturday nights... In GB, they usually had 3 or 4 TEs on the roster and used them all... So it may be that a vet TE (like Keller), Egnew and a draftee could be who we end up seeing on the roster...along with perhaps another guy on the practice squad...
I think there maybe room for all 3. Clay can line up at FB most of the time. Also, as I recall in Green Bay during Philbin's tenure, they carried up to 5 TEs on the 53 man roster. If we sign Keller, and draft Escobar, and say, Michael Williams of Alabama, IMO the best blocking TE in the draft by a country mile, that would make a pretty good quintet. It could also be considered like 4.5 TEs because Clay is a TE/FB.
Honestly, I'm not sure you should ever cut someone drafted in the first 3-4 rounds after his rookie year unless he's completely hopeless.
He definitely needs to be given another year. I believe the Finley comparison of his first year vs. Egnew's has been compared multiple times on this board.
yeah It'd be stupid to cut him after one year. Him not meeting expectations at a different level right away shouldn't make a guy eligible to be cut.
IMO Egnew's problem is all in the head. If this cat gets the mentality of "I'm going to do anything and everything humanly possible to succeed, and nothing and nobody is going to prevent me from doing so", he certainly has all the physical tools to be very dangerous. He just lacks the fire right now. Hope last year was a wake up call for him to light the timbers.
Agreed, he looked very frustrated under the lights on Hard Knocks. Also, "When Ryan snaps the ball, I'm going to block the **** out of this guy."
He's still meeting with the team I guess. Phins are probably waiting for Jake Long decision is my speculation.
There was definitely some lateness which I think I alluded to in another post or if not I meant to. Lateness on the throws to the outside was the biggest problem for Keller with respect to Mark Sanchez being his quarterback. But at the same time Sanchez was actually GOOD at hitting the man over the middle. Good timing, good ball placement, and he threw to him in man coverage fearlessly, allowing Keller the ability to adjust to the ball and make the catch. You really can't say that about all the other QBs out there, even some of the good ones. Just because a QB is bad overall doesn't mean he does every single thing worse than every other guy out there. This is precisely correct. I think the reason he's not a bigger threat on deeper tight end routes is because of his size.
Never heard anything about "poor work ethic". Ever. Colorful personality is a given. But it's never really been a team detriment.
Regarding Michael Egnew, he's got loads of potential. When I'm scouting all these Tight Ends it's hard to not think about routes that I've seen Egnew run that are similar, what speed and athleticism he runs them with, what he's done after the catch and after contact, the challenged catches he's come down with, etc. I just think he stepped into a situation he wasn't ready for. I think he's intimidated by strong personalities. I think he gets nervous about screwing up and it causes him to screw up. I do NOT think he is dumb, based on a number of interviews I've seen as well as some of his prose from his blog. He's obviously a very bad artist though, lol. Lavonte David was a star as a rookie in this league. Michael Egnew pwned the sh!t out of him when they played in college. And I mean directly on him, big time catches right over top of David's helmet, getting open against him, etc. Just flat out pwned the man. And Arthur Brown may be the best inside linebacker in this NFL Draft. Many people think so now that Manti Te'o's star has fallen. There's still some discomfort with Alec Ogletree out there. Well, Michael Egnew also pwned Arthur Brown for a touchdown. Direct coverage, option route, catch and run. Pwned. And you can look at every single catch every single tight end in Miami made last year, between preseason and regular season, and you'll not find more than maybe 1 or 2 catches that were more impressive than the big grab Michael Egnew made against Tampa Bay in the preseason game. When he did play, he got open. Tannehill just didn't look for him. Here are some good examples. On this play, perhaps I'm wrong but based on the coverage and what the safeties and corners were showing, as well as the linebackers on the blitz, while both inside routes clearly were open, Egnew was the one running into the biggest amount of vacated space because Binns was running into an area where the safety was clamping downward. Tannehill just made up his mind to throw it to Binns and not Egnew. Binns dropped the football. Let's say Egnew gets thrown the ball as he should have, how many yards does he gain with this much open space? Hell, with HIS speed (which is somwhere around the 4.50 range), if that left safety takes even a slightly problematic angle, Egnew could've been off for a 56 yard touchdown. Would that one simple play actually have made a dent in peoples' expectations about him? I think so. Probably not as good an example but still decent. Based on the rotation of the safeties, Egnew is destined on this play to be one-on-one with a linebacker deep on this out-and-up route. The real problems here are two-fold. For one thing Ryan Tannehill gives no indication he was ever inclined to look for Egnew. For another, at the point when Tannehill could be switching over to and throwing to Michael Egnew, the blitz pickup is allowing a rusher into Tannehill's ear. Ryan would've needed to step up into the pocket and then release the ball to Egnew in this mismatch situation. But it would've been worth it. Here is another play almost exactly like the one above in every respect. Again based on the safety rotation, Egnew is going to be alone with rookie linebacker Donta Hightower. Again the pass protection looks problematic...in this case Big Weirdo is getting put on skates in forcing Ryan Tannehill to step up. Again Ryan Tannehill did not seem all that inclined to look toward Egnew in single coverage regardless of Big Weirdo's pass protection issues. And going back to the preseason, how much would expectations of Egnew be lifted if Pat Devlin had thrown this ball in the right spot?
We carried 4 last year (Mastrud), but I don't know about 5. Maybe we could line Keller up in the slot sometimes a la Aaron Hernandez, and then like you said, Clay at FB occasionally? So we would have 4 tight ends in principle, under your scenario. I can't imagine adding three tight ends, though. It just seems excessive with needs at CB, T, G, S (Clemons is a stopgap), and #2 RB. I think Keller-Williams-Clay-Egnew is a realistic possibility, though.
Miami carried 5 Tight Ends for a few weeks last year until Charles Clay got injured. Fasano, Clay, Mastrud, Egnew, and Kyle Miller. I think Green Bay even carried 6 last year or the year before, so I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility.
Maybe cocaine would help the guy break out of his shell? His problem is at least somewhat related to confidence. /not serious I think Egnew has too much upside to drop at this point, and I don't think it has much to do with Matt Jones or Vernon Gholston or anybody else. It has to do with what the offense here is trying to do, and it has to do with whether or not the FO feels hamstrung by using the roster spot. It didn't seem like much of a problem last year. I expect him to contribute this year or look for work next offseason.
In the second frame of Egnew's out and up route on Hightower, I think that's actually Lamar Miller getting blown up or was very late sliding over in protection - where it's labeled "Problem". I know Martin did struggle in that New England game, but to me that seems more of a flaw attributed to 1) play design, 2) Tannehill/O-line missing a protection call, or 3)just a bad block by Lamar Miller. I count 5 guys at the O-line depth, ranging from the 10 yardline (Pouncey) back to the 7 (Nate Garner). I think Martin is at the 8 yardline in that frame.
Really good post. More of these in the future, please. Edit: Most guys are visual learners so I think this goes a long way to dispelling certain myths about players. This also tells me that Tannehill still needs some work on his decision making and/or develop trust in Egnew.
None of it says Egnew is going to be a good NFL player, but had those plays gone differently there would almost certainly be a dramatic change in public perception/expectations.
I have from numerous Giant fans. And it was evident watching some of the games. It's probably one of the top reasons why they didn't re-sign him.
His poor work ethic is much like his personality I listened to him on the local radio show here in Dallas probably 2 dozen times. The man is a joker. He would prefer to be a stand up comic, but was born with the body he has. His work ethic doesn't lack because of a bad attitude, more of a lazy entertainer man in a football mans body. I am personally glad we didn't get Marty B. Love the man, but not the player...at all.....
Rich Cimini just tweeted that he left the building without a deal, but the two sides will "keep in touch". Speculated that the Dolphins want to gauge the market. Seems like Keller is wanting more at the moment than we're willing to pay.
Two day visit and Keller walks without a contract. I had a feeling this was going to happen. Lukewarm interest in Fred David I see.
Oh for ****s sake Ireland it's been a whole day without signing a big money free agent what are you doing I have no concept of the salary cap JUST GET IT DONE
